Excavating Self was created between January and April 2023 and is comprised of two series and other additional works. It starts and ends with a set of self portraits that reflect on the experience before and after creating this body of work. The first series, On Sacrifice, draws on experiences from a previous relationship, the feelings surrounding them, and the emotional fallout of the breakup. The second series, Juntos, explores relationships with family, past and current loves, and the way these relationships shape understanding of identity. The remaining pieces focus on topics such as ancestry, gender expression, and sexuality. Other central themes include self discovery, preserving memory, and love in all of its multiple truths. All pieces were created using intaglio printmaking techniques with hand written text.

It is well documented that menopause and the related decline in circulatory steroid hormones estrogen and progesterone are associated with memory alterations. Rodent models of surgical menopause can be used to study these effects, including ovariectomy (Ovx), or the surgical removal of the ovaries. This thesis aimed to characterize the effects of surgical menopause on spatial working and reference memory in rats and examine profiles of uterine gene expression alterations that may serve as indications of mechanisms underlying this association. Eighteen female rats were randomly assigned to one of two surgical treatment groups, either Ovx (the surgical menopause group) or sham (the control group). All subjects underwent testing on the water version of the radial arm maze (WRAM) which allows for the assessment of reference memory errors and two types of working memory errors. After behavioral testing, rat uterine tissues were dissected and RNA sequenced. The results showed that Ovx impaired spatial reference memory performance during a maze learning phase, with Ovx rats making reference memory failures earlier in the day, even before working memory load increased, as compared to control rats. There were no surgical menopause effects on spatial working memory, which may be due to the low working memory load and the young age of the rats. Post-hoc analyses showed that reference memory performance was correlated with nerve growth factor (NGF) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene expression in uterine tissues. These findings add to the literature on the impact of estrogen and female cyclicity on memory and cognition. The results suggest that Ovx impairment of the ability to learn long-term spatial memory information relates to uterine gene expression underlying cellular functioning and that NGF and AChE genes are involved in pathways that give way to underlying cellular functioning that impacts cognition. Future studies should continue to evaluate the effects of menopause on memory function and the effectiveness of hormone therapy.

Familiar Places: Ghosts of a Memory is a thesis exhibition, presented in Gallery 100 in Tempe, AZ, accompanied by a written investigation into the function of photography in the home and art. This project is a diaristic photographic record including images of myself, my family, my environment, and mementos or objects that embody family history. I am interested in what we hold onto to keep memories and create our "home". I moved frequently growing up so my sense of home became firmly grounded in family, tradition, and the things we kept close, making home a practiced space not a place. This thesis project explores how material culture, including photographs, is used in creating the space of the home. Questions regarding the nature of the photograph as a memory keeping device or memory trigger is investigated to understand their usefulness and accuracy to the memory. A deeper examination of the difference between an artist's photograph of family and home versus the family photograph is discussed and presented by utilizing installations in the exhibition. Prospective memory is defined as remembering to carry out specified actions in the future. Research has suggested that prospective memory retrieval is reliant on multiple cognitive processes to function, and the ways in which these different processes are used is dependent on a variety of variables relating to the prospective memory task at hand. The current study focuses on the strength of the association between the prospective
memory cue and the prospective memory intention. Based on literature suggesting that aspects of prospective memory are reliant on executive control functioning, the current study examined the possibility that executive control depletion would affect prospective memory ability on subsequent tasks. Results showed that depletion of executive control resources, measured objectively, did not impair prospective memory in either a low or
high cue-association condition. However, participants‟ subjective assessment of their own fatigue correlated significantly with their subsequent prospective memory performance, regardless of association condition. The results of the study indicate that depletion studies that fail to account for both objective and subjective measures suffer from an unclear interpretation of effects, and that recognition of perceived expectancies
of cognitive resource limitation can assist in improving prospective memory ability.

Immediate early genes (IEGs) are the first set of genes to be transcribed in a cell in response to stimuli; their expression is quick and is not protein synthesis dependent. Neurons are activated in response to external stimuli, causing a rapid increase in IEG expression in the brain. IEG proteins go on to affect fundamental neurobiological processes that are known to be dysfunctional in patients with psychiatric disorders, and therefore IEGs have been connected to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Early growth response (Egr) genes are immediate early gene transcription factors (IEG-TFs) that are expressed in response to an altered environment. The IEG-TFs, early growth response 1 (EGR1) and early growth response 3 (EGR3) are necessary for processes such as memory and synaptic plasticity; lack of function in these genes causes dysfunction or disruption of these processes. We wanted to observe if increasing the function of Egrs by overexpressing them will lead to improved memory. To help further understand how behavior is affected by the overexpression (O/E) of Egr1 in response to stimuli, the AAV-ESARE-Egr1 virus was developed to be injected in the hippocampus of mice. In the hippocampus of wild-type (WT) mice, cells that are active endogenously express Egr1. The virus was created using the synaptic activity-response element (SARE), an element discovered on the promoter of the IEG activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated (Arc) gene by our collaborators in Japan. Using an “enhanced” form of SARE (ESARE), our newly created virus acts to overexpress Egr1 only in response to activity in the hippocampus; we can then observe if the behavioral processes associated with Egr1 will improve. First, this project aims to validate that the AAV-ESARE-Egr1 virus is increasing Egr1 expression in the active hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) granule cells of WT mice, and only in response to activity. The activity is in the form of a physiological stimulus, environmental enrichment (EE) and a non-physiological stimulus, electroconvulsive seizures (ECS). After confirming these characteristics of AAV-ESARE-Egr1 we can then use it to observe if EGR1 O/E improves the memory of mice.

Understanding major historical events often provides novel insights into current conflicts. More specifically, analyzing international disputes through the lens of identity, memory, and narrative systems creates a basis for comprehending the power of collective thought in large political systems. The Bosnian and Ukrainian Wars are unique case studies that show the interrelated nature of memory and identity politics. This thesis seeks to identify disinformation systems within these conflicts that contribute to a pan-Slavic identity. Additionally, it will show the connection between the Bosnian and Ukrainian Wars in its programming, narrative-building techniques, and use of identity as a basis for strength. Understanding how identity is formed under certain political atmospheres is essential because it strengthens our ideas of individual thought within community identities. Throughout this thesis a literature review will show the array of identity, memory, and misinformation studies, thus pointing to future research areas.
