The passage of 2007's Legal Arizona Workers Act, which required all new hires to be tested for legal employment status through the federal E-Verify database, drastically changed the employment prospects for undocumented workers in the state. Using data from the 2007-2010 American Community Survey, this paper seeks to identify the impact of this law on the labor force in Arizona, specifically regarding undocumented workers and less educated native workers. Overall, the data shows that the wage bias against undocumented immigrants doubled in the four years studied, and the wages of native workers without a high school degree saw a temporary, positive increase compared to comparable workers in other states. The law did not have an effect on the wages of native workers with a high school degree.

Textbooks are crucial in classrooms when it comes to developing lesson plans and curriculum for the classroom. They serve as a way for students to learn more about a certain topic in depth and can improve reading comprehension skills. However, as past studies have shown (Grever and van der Vlies), textbooks can be one-sided and leave out stories and perspectives from marginalized groups, such as African Americans and Indigenous peoples. Multiple perspectives in textbooks allow students to use historical consciousness to reflect how these historical events have an impact on modern society. Arizona has been in a unique political position over the past decade. In 2011, the state legislature passed a bill banning ethnic studies to be taught in schools. This was eventually reversed by the Court in 2017. Recently, the Governor signed two bills regarding education, which are improving curriculum on the Holocaust and banning critical race theory from being taught in schools. Because of Arizona’s geographic diversity, textbook content might vary since Arizona holds the most federally recognized tribes and borders Mexico. To analyze those differences, the 15 counties of Arizona are grouped into five regions, and from each region, one textbook will be analyzed. The textbooks will be coded for each racial community, which will be Asian American, Hispanic American, Black American, and Indigenous American. It is concluded that there is a direct relationship between the textbooks chosen and the racial groups that are covered in these books. Counties that had a larger Indigenous population tended to have a textbook that would cover more Indigenous history.

Scorpions are predatory arachnids that are among the most ancient terrestrial invertebrates. They are typically found residing in desert and riparian environments. Scorpions are predatory arachnids that are among the most ancient terrestrial invertebrates. They are typically found residing in desert and riparian environments. Viruses associated with scorpions have been explored in the past, unveiling partial RNA virus sequences and polyomaviruses, but more research in this area is necessary. Cycloviruses are non-enveloped viruses with circular single-stranded DNA genomes (~1.7 to 1.9 kb). Cycloviruses were initially identified in mammals and have now been detected in samples from a wide range of mammalian and insect species. Polyomaviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses (~4 to 7 kb). They are known for causing tumors in the host it infects, and have previously been identified in a diverse array of organisms, including scorpions. The objective for this study was to identify known and novel viruses in scorpions. Using high-throughput sequencing and traditional molecular techniques we determine the genome sequences of cycloviruses and polyomaviruses. Sixteen of the forty-three scorpion samples were positive for eight different species of cycloviruses. According to ICTV guidelines, seven of the eight species were novel cycloviruses which were found in bark scorpions, stripe-tailed scorpions, yellow ground scorpions, and giant hairy scorpions (Centruroides sculpturatus, Paravaejovis spinigerus, Paravaejovis confusus & Hadrurus arizonensis) from Maricopa, Pinal, and Pima county in Arizona, USA. Additionally, one previously known cyclovirus species was recovered in bark scorpions (Centruroides sculpturatus) in Pima county which had previously been documented in guano from a Mexican free-tailed bat in Arizona. There were ten scorpions out of forty-three for which we recovered polyomavirus scorpion samples that grouped into four different polyomavirus species. Polyomaviruses were only identified in bark scorpions (Centruroides sculpturatus) from Maricopa, Pinal, and Pima county. Of the polyomavirus genomes recovered three belong to previously identified scorpion polyomavirus 1 and five to scorpion polyomavirus 3, and two represent two new species named scorpion polyomavirus 4 and scorpion polyomavirus 5. The implications of the discovery of cycloviruses and polyomaviruses from this study contributes to our understanding of viral diversity associated with Scorpions.

There exists a prejudicial influence in the way that psychological thrillers depict their mentally-ill subjects. Accordingly, this creative project closely examines scenes from the following four seminal films: Psycho, Taxi Driver, American Psycho, and Joker -- each of which exemplifies four psychosocial themes that have a dominant presence within the ‘psycho-thriller’ sub-genre. These include themes of toxic masculinity, urban corruption, social class, and latent trauma. Each of these are then discussed in terms of their presence and meaning within the genre -- particularly the method in which they reinforce prejudicial understandings of severe mental illness (SMI) despite reflecting the dominant beliefs of medico-scientific communities, criminological theorists, and psychoanalytic schools of thought of the eras in which they were released. Given that these theories continue to inform the public’s understanding of severe mental illness (SMI), this thesis seeks to expose how the enduring presence of these psychosocial themes within the ‘psycho-thriller’ subgenre has conflated the presence of mental illness with criminal disposition. After discussing the representation of these themes in each film, this paper highlights how psychological thrillers may function as instruments of advocacy for mental health in spite of their ‘horrific’ elements, and provides examples of how other entertainment media have helped normalize neurodivergence in a neurotypical society.

Although significant progress has been made in terms of LGBT rights in the United States, the topic has still remained one of the most prevalent and divisive issues in recent history. In Arizona, this prevalence and divisiveness has been illustrated through the state's civil rights and legislative history. Additionally, the importance of this issue is highlighted by the incidents of discrimination and bullying towards LGBT students in Arizona's schools. With this in mind, it was critical to conduct an exploratory historical analysis of LGBT rights in Arizona to better understand the recent history and current climate towards the LGBT community in the state. To explore this issue, the data consisted of reports on the fiscal impact of adopting LGBT-friendly policies, reports on LGBT health and well-being, reports on the school climate, court cases, pieces of legislation, opinion polls, news articles, and opinion pieces. This data on LGBT rights in Arizona was then codified, summarized, and analyzed using Axel Honneth's theory of recognition. Through the application of Honneth's theory to the data, it was possible to examine the history of recognition and misrecognition towards the LGBT community in Arizona. In total, there were six identifiable areas that emerged in which recognition and misrecognition exists: LGBT identity and well-being, marriage recognition, LGBT youth, rights and partner benefits, allies of the LGBT community, and opponents of LGBT rights. This project examined those areas through the lens of Arizona's history and provides insights into the current status of LGBT rights in Arizona.

My thesis is a comprehensive, multi-page report highlighting the ethical concerns of Arizona’s English-only law, or Proposition 203. It will emphasize the detrimental effects the law has on bilingualism, language preservation, and educational equity. To do this, I will explore research on the benefits of bilingualism for cultural awareness, brain development, and career opportunities. The project will underscore the importance of embracing linguistic diversity in the public education system in Arizona. My report will provide some background on the topic by delving into the historical context and intentions behind the English-only law. This will essentially expose to readers the misguided attempts of the law, some of which include boosting test scores at the expense of genuine learning experiences. I will include information that supports my argument that Proposition 203 discourages bilingualism and strips impactful opportunities from students in the public education system. Additionally, anecdotes and personal opinions from educators will be included to strengthen my argument. By highlighting the ethical implications of prioritizing test outcomes over holistic education, my thesis aims to advocate for a shift towards inclusive, more immersive bilingual education models.

This research paper explores the dynamic interplay between early Soviet film and the French New Wave movement, with a specific focus on the cinematic contributions of Sergei Eisenstein. By delving into the personal diaries and memoirs of this iconic director and drawing from a rich array of essays, articles, and interviews found in the pages of Cahiers du Cinéma and Revue du Cinéma, this study seeks to unravel the intricate web of influences and ideological connections that link the two cinematic movements. Sergei Eisenstein, a pioneering figure in Soviet film, is examined in the context of his most prominent cinematic works, including "Battleship Potemkin" and "October." By scrutinizing Eisenstein's theories on montage and the dialectical synthesis of images, this paper uncovers the profound impact of his ideas on the aesthetics and narrative strategies employed by the directors of the French New Wave.
