A research project turned creative project focusing on the narrative of the student's perspective in the Next Generation Service Corps scholarship program. Arizona State University is embracing new ways of thinking about how open stacks can make books active objects of engagement for a new generation of students, rather than risk becoming mere backdrops for study spaces. By taking a deliberate design approach to answering the question of which books and where, ASU Library seeks to position print collections as an engagement mechanism. This chapter presents the transformative potential of open stacks, along with planning for access, assessment and inclusive engagement. The authors describe how ASU Library is using a major library renovation project as a catalyst to explore these ideas, and propose a pathway to developing shared solutions for more effective use of library collections.
Academic libraries seek to engage people with information resources and maximize use of library spaces. When users increasingly rely on digital rather than print resources, libraries respond by shifting space usage from stacks to user working and reading spaces. How then do we, as academic library professionals, best keep print collections on public view and maximize user engagement?
In this whitepaper, we focus on fostering engagement with print resources among\nlibrary users, particularly with open stack print collections and users within the local community. We advocate moving toward a more flexible, more user-focused service that makes library collections easier to understand and to use. Libraries need to work with their surrounding communities in the further development and presentation of their collections. We offer a flexible, a la carte approach to transforming open stack academic library print collection management. We have developed a three-tiered system of potential approaches and actions for academic libraries to foster engagement with their collections. We also include materials and tools to help guide individual libraries towards a data-driven approach to print curation that may be tailored to their local context. We hope that these approaches and tools aid academic libraries in helping users engage in meaningful dialogues with print resources.

This thesis will focus on increasing the engagement of members within the W.P. Carey Business Ambassadors. This was done by first analyzing the environments the organization exists in: Arizona State University and the W.P. Carey School of Business. Each of these organizations contextualize the Business Ambassadors, providing a structure for the organization to operate within. Next, the organization’s processes are analyzed. This provides a current status of the club to be used a foundation for systematic review. Through this review, it is revealed that members often do the bare minimum required for the organization. In fact, only a select few fully taking advantage of the events offered by the club. To fix this, the management techniques outlined in the thesis’ primary source, Reframing Organizations by Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal, are introduced as ways to assist managers in problem sectors or areas of opportunity. These areas of review are the Structural, Human Resources, Political, and Symbolic frameworks. Each frame is explored and described, eventually being contextualized with the Business Ambassadors organization. These frames then provide insights to ways the organization can invoke greater participation from its members. These solutions include investing in training and mentorship, fulfilling member needs, promoting leadership, and leveraging the symbolic strength of the organization. The paper concludes with next steps for the organization and ways the solutions can be put into action with respect to the club’s goals.
