“The Long Alchemy of Becoming: Aqua es Vida” is a short, artistic film depicting the history of the Universe shown through the microcosm of the Mexican town, Cuatro Ciénegas, in the state of Coahuila. The film takes the viewer from the start of the universe to what scientists believe will be its end, via a poem written by Dr. James Elser. “The Long Alchemy of Becoming: Aqua es Vida” starts with the Big Bang, through the formation of matter, stars, planets, including Earth. From there, the viewer witnesses how life evolved illustrated via scenes in the ciénegas (‘marsh’ in Spanish) found in Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, Mexico. The film explores how life expanded out from water, producing plants and animals, including humans. Then, modern life in Cuatro Ciénegas is shown, including the modern agricultural practices that are threatening to destroy the ciénegas that sustain long histories of microbial evolution. The film concludes with the end mankind and the eventual destruction of Earth by the dying sun. Cuatro Ciénegas is a biologically and ecologically significant location, because its pools and marshes are home to many endemic species, including stromatolites, which are very rare, bio-chemical living structures. This film is part of a National Science Foundation grant, and reflects the extensive scientific research efforts in and around Cuatro Ciénegas and its unique pools.

This project consists of a website, presentation, and a series of documentary style short films shot about figure skating for my thesis in order to graduate from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University with a degree from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  The website, created with Adobe Edge Animate, outlines how to become an elite figure skater and serves as a road map for beginners.  The text of the website describes the structure of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program, what is expected of skaters at each level, and how skaters go about training and competing.   The video series included on the website features athletes at four different levels in order to give the viewer a sense of progression through the ranks of figure skating. This project explores the dimensions that affect the success of a nonprofit organizations' web presence by using a dance and health nonprofit website as the foundation of the research and redesign. This report includes literature and design research, analysis, recommendations and a journal of the web design process. Through research, three categories were identified as the primary dimensions affecting the success of a website: content, technical adequacy and appearance. Furthermore, website success is influenced by how the strength of individual categories relies on one another. To improve the web design of Dancers and Health Together Inc., content implementations and redesign elements were both research and personal preference-based. The redesigned website can be found at www.collaydennis.com and will become inactive after May 31, 2015.

The foundations of legacy media, especially the news media, are not as strong as they once were. A digital revolution has changed the operation models for and journalistic organizations are trying to find their place in the new market. This project is intended to analyze the effects of new/emerging technologies on the journalism industry. Five different categories of technology will be explored. They are as follows: the semantic web, automation software, data analysis and aggregators, virtual reality and drone journalism. The potential of these technologies will be broken up according to four guidelines, ethical implications, effects on the reportorial process, business impacts and changes to the consumer experience. Upon my examination, it is apparent that no single technology will offer the journalism industry the remedy it has been searching for. Some combination of emerging technologies however, may form the basis for the next generation of news. My project focuses on the future of traditional radio and answering the question of whether or not it will be able to survive in a digital age. I provided a literature review to offer background of the history of radio and the challenges it has faced during its existence. I addressed five specific areas: television, satellite radio, Internet radio, podcasts, and mobile devices. My creative element consisted of a radio documentary that compiled interviews from professionals in the broadcast industry. I answered three questions in my research: 1.) Do experts in the industry believe traditional radio will be able to survive the emergence of new technologies and non-traditional programming? Or, will these new technologies and non-traditional programming ultimately overcome traditional radio and become the new standard? 2.) In what ways do industry experts believe that the traditional radio format will have to change in order to compete and prevail over new technologies to remain successful? 3.) Which non-traditional radio formats do industry experts believe pose the biggest threat to traditional radio? In conclusion, I found uncertain times--but also times of opportunity and innovation lie ahead for the broadcast industry. Traditional radio will exist for the foreseeable future. As long as the radio dial exists in cars, traditional radio will remain relevant. In order to adapt as digital technology gains popularity, traditional radio must provide programming that is interesting and compelling to satisfy the increased thirst for audio. Physicians generally agree that immunizations save lives, but parents are starting to opt out of vaccinations for their children at alarmingly high levels. This has caused a debate. Some feel that full immunization coverage is essential to this country's future. Others are choosing alternative medicines and taking their chances with deadly diseases. I first became truly aware of the vaccine debate when my baby cousin, Jacob, passed away in 2002. He was 1 years old. Jacob contracted seizures soon after receiving the routine MMR vaccine. Doctors signed papers contributing his death to a severe reaction to the MMR vaccine, and my aunt and uncle were given a $250,000 settlement for their pain and suffering. My family has been involved in the vaccine world for nearly 15 years, and it is this involvement that drove me to want produce a documentary about immunizations. Exploring the Veil of Blackness is a creative project in the form of a podcast titled UKME America”. UKME America stands for Uwem mi Kederimbot America, which means “my life in the world in America”. It aims to explore the differences that divide individuals within the black community from a perspective of a First-Generation African American. It also illustrates how diverse the black community is. Drawing from my own experiences and research, this led me to a common theme centered around the following four questions: (a) what is it like to lose one’s identity; (b) where does this insecurity stem from; (c) how does society impact the way we view ourselves; and (d) how can we uplift ourselves. In my podcast, I interviewed individuals who identified as African Americans, First Generation African Americans, and Africans.
Everyone I interviewed told me their stories using historical, social, and cultural narratives. Overall, I want individuals to understand that there is fluidity behind the meaning of “black”, and the more individuals learn to embrace their differences, the more we can break down the barriers, put a united front, fight societal discrimination. I would like to thank my thesis director Dr. Neveser Köker and Second Committee Chair, Matthew Voorhees. I want to thank them for their guidance, motivation, patience, and for pushing and challenging me to reach new heights. I also would like thank my mom and Dr. Cynthia Patiño, for their constant encouragement and support. This would not have been possible without them.

Zines have made space for queer, intersectional feminists to bring together academic and artistic knowledge in order to produce a message and inspire readers. In order to criticize the legal definition and practical execution of obscenity in the US, a visual component was a necessity. The use of a Zine allowed for a critical and humorous exploration of obscenity in US law and media. The Zine provides a visual analysis while the companion essay provides a critique of the zine and additional analysis. The Zine brings awareness to ways in which the legal historical objectification of black and native bodies contributed to the creation of modern obscenity laws. These laws are based on racist and sexist ideals of morality and create inherently flawed definitions of obscenity through personal bias. The flaws within the laws allow for exceptions in the legal definition of obscenity which normalizes the commodification of women's bodies. These laws and the exceptions present contribute to the dehumanization of and violence towards women as usefulness is deemed the most important factor when considering the use of women’s bodies in potentially obscene images and films.

South Korea possesses the only culture to successfully create a transnationality and hybridity formula that is not replicable. So why Korea and why now? The goal of this thesis creative project is to demonstrate the marketing and communications strategies used in the arts and culture industry to drive global awareness and interest in K-Pop. In order to achieve that goal, I created HellotoHallyu.com, a website designed for an audience of Millennials and Generation Z English speakers to increase their awareness of the growth and impact of the Korean Wave in a fun and engaging way. So those who may hear a song by K-Pop idol group BTS on a music awards show in the U.S. can get themselves up-to-speed before diving into the fast-paced world of K-culture gossip sites and forums. Hello to Hallyu delivers consumer-friendly, educational content easily understood by English speakers with no prior knowledge of Korean culture, while still piquing the interest of K-pop connoisseurs. It provides the background necessary for even the most dedicated fans to glean new knowledge of Korea's cultural industry and a new perspective on the content they consume. Hello to Hallyu is based on a combination of secondary and primary research conducted over four semesters beginning Spring 2017 and continuing through Spring 2018. This project is set up as an ever-expanding resource freely available to anyone with internet access. The research required to maintain the site will continue with the Wave. However, the content currently on the site is evergreen, a documentation of the history of the Wave as explained in peer-reviewed articles and by Dr. Ingyu Oh as well as a documentation of my personal experience with Hallyu while in Korea and as a Westerner living in the U.S. The site's goal is to demonstrate the marketing and communications strategies used in the industry to drive global awareness and interest. Through this means, Hello to Hallyu aims to provide fully developed multimedia content intended to increase English speakers' awareness of the growth and impact of the Korean Wave as shown through site visits, content views, and audience engagement.

In collegiate athletics, recruiting talented prospective athletes is imperative to be successful at the Division I level. This creative project aims to explore the recruiting culture of NCAA Division I women's soccer programs across the United States. More specifically, it will analyze the surfacing trend of recruiting players at increasingly younger ages and evaluate how this trend is affecting institutions, coaches, recruits, and the game as a whole. In today's recruiting landscape, youth soccer players are being recruited by college coaches as early as seventh grade with some athletes offering verbal commitments before they even enter high school. With 333 Division I women's soccer programs in the country, competition to recruit the most talented athletes has caused the age at which athletes are being recruited to take a dive. While college coaches feel it is wrong to be recruiting players this young, if they don't secure the top talent now, their teams won't win in the future and they will be without a job. Throughout the course of this creative project, multiple prospective athletes, college coaches, and youth club soccer coaches provide insight into their own experiences in this recruiting age. The future of recruiting in this collegiate sport is more deeply discussed, concluding that in order for this trend to be slowed or halted, the NCAA must step in.
