Ugh, Hungry is a multimedia business that hopes to counter typical college eating habits by being a resource for creating fast, affordable and healthful eating. The founder drew on her experience as a student in both the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Arizona State University School of Nutrition for a foundation for this project. The business was created within two semesters allotted for thesis study as directed by Barrett, the Honors College. Research of competitors, audience, and business creation was conducted in order to begin an entrepreneurial start-up. The corresponding website, ughhungry.com, is a collection of recipes directed toward healthy eating for a financially limited, or college lifestyle. Each recipe article contains an opening article, either a video or photographs, and a recipe. Business, journalism, and nutrition are combined to create a fully engaging experience that can expand and has potential to profit in the future. The thesis project that follows examines the steps, research, and process of creating a journalism-based online business. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Ugh, Hungry model are analyzed. Nutrition research was used to examine the problem of college weight gain. Data analytics were deployed to research the site's potential audience. The paper closely analyzes key competitors, including BuzzFeed, The Dorm Room Diet, Spoon University, and Tastemade. Finally, a business proposal for future investors in Ugh, Hungry outlines the potential future of the business.

My thesis was designed as a creative project. My overall mission was to develop an idea that involved both my major in marketing and minor in health and wellness. My topic was how to start... a start-up business. My business, PEAK4U, is a professional fitness center that provides classes in therapeutic yoga, meditation, Physical Therapy, massage, and personal training. The customers are other business entrepreneurs who would like to provide their service at our facility. I obtained an LLC, Articles of Organization, and started a bank account for PEAK4U. I located a space to house all of these activities where I charge 25$ per hour no matter what service they provide. I have created a website that provides all the information on our instructors, classes, products we sell, and an area where instructors can apply online. This idea has been developed over my four-year academic career at ASU. A few of my honors classes here at Barrett have given me the knowledge in how to start a business. With the help from my director John Dietrich and my committee member Tiffany Gray, I was given insight from both the business and fitness sides on how to create this business. This thesis was designed to help finance doctorate school in Physical Therapy and help me to gain experience in a field that I am passionate about. Overall, the creation of this business was not very time consuming because our entrepreneurs are accountable for creating their own marketing, but must pass it through me for approval.

This project aims to explore factors influencing college students' eating behavior, and solutions to poor eating habits throughout college. I found that money, taste, and convenience are among the largest contributors to decisions college students make regarding where and what to eat. I have created a cookbook, where each recipe costs under and up to $2 to create, that falls within the acceptable macronutrient distribution range (AMDR), and that will provide a reasonable number of calories for a young adult. My create project entails 21 original recipes that have been tested, perfected, and formed into the AMDR, to provide financially struggling students with a week's worth of substantial meals. I also included original illustrations to make the project visually appealing and add an additional layer of creativity to the work. There are 21 original recipes and 20 original illustrations found in the book, along with original research on the least expensive locations to buy food and the instruments necessary to prepare it. I have also included secondary research on the factors influencing college students' eating habits, and the recommended calorie intake and price point for young adults on a "thrifty" (low income) food plan. I have begun looking into publishing my work, both in print and as an e-book.

There are two goals for this honors student project: (1) to determine (using an online survey) what college students do and do not know about cooking and preparing foods and (2) to video record short demonstrations of several cooking skills that college students lack the most based on survey responses. Ultimately, this project hopes to help students develop skills they can use in the kitchen to encourage more cooking at home and less eating out, dietary changes that should lead to more healthful meals and a healthier population. Popular culture has a longstanding tendency for being affected by, and reversely affecting, politics. Films, in particular, can exist as either purse “escapism” or heady pathways for political commentary. During the Second World War, governments in both the United States and Great Britain used film as a vessel for their own messages, but after the war ended, the two nations allowed their respective film industries more free expression in commenting on wartime and post-war politics. Film also provided particularly vivid political commentary during, and in the years immediately following, the Cold War. Though film has a longstanding history of being a force for political commentary, the medium’s specific engagement with the Cold War holds particular significance because works produced by the two nations’ film industries paralleled the social trend toward political activism at the time. While films produced in the UK and the United States in the 1960s addressed a wide range of contentious political issues, a huge body of work was spurred on by one of the most pressing political tensions of the time: namely, the Cold War.

The United States and Great Britain were major, allied forces during the Cold War. Despite their allied positions, they had unique politico-social perspectives that greatly reflected their immediate involvement in the conflict, in addition to their respective political histories and engagement in previous wars. As the Cold War threat was a large and, in many ways, incomprehensible one, each country took certain elements of the Cold War situation and used those elements to reflect their varied political social positions to a more popular audience and the culture it consumed.

In turn, filmmakers in both countries used their mediums to make overarching political commentaries on the Cold War situation. This analysis looks at five films from those countries during the 1960s, and explores how each representation offered different, often conflicting, perspectives on how to “manage” Cold War tensions, while simultaneously reflecting their conflicted culture and political decisions. The films analyzed reveal that each country focused on contrasting perceptions about the source of the threat posed by Soviet forces, thus becoming tools to further promote their distinct political stances. While the specifics of that commentary changed with each filmmaker, they generally paralleled each country’s perspective on the overall Cold War atmosphere. The British message represented the Cold War as a very internal battle—one that involved the threat within UK borders via the infiltration of spies the tools of espionage. In contrast, the American films suggest that the Cold War threat was largely an internal one, a struggle best combatted by increasing weaponry that would help control the threat before it reached American borders.

The intention of this thesis is to create a cookbook to best serve the needs of all who attend Lions Camp Tatiyee. The cookbook was used as a resource in providing the Lions Camp Tatiyee Kitchen staff with simple, healthy recipes to use in the implementation of their summer menu.

The intention of this thesis is to create a cookbook to best serve the needs of all who attend Lions Camp Tatiyee. The cookbook was used as a resource in providing the Lions Camp Tatiyee Kitchen staff with simple, healthy recipes to use in the implementation of their summer menu. This thesis discusses the culmination of the idea, the process of execution, current research concerning the relationship between nutrition and health concerns related to special needs, and achievements and further advancements of my creative project.

There exists a gendered difference in how sports films portray female protagonist athletes. This creative project closely examines scenes from four films, Bend It Like Beckham, Million Dollar Baby, Girlfight and Whip It, that collectively represent four gendered themes that are present within the female protagonist sport film subgenre.

There exists a gendered difference in how sports films portray female protagonist athletes. This creative project closely examines scenes from four films, Bend It Like Beckham, Million Dollar Baby, Girlfight and Whip It, that collectively represent four gendered themes that are present within the female protagonist sport film subgenre. Each film provides representative examples for themes of exceptionalism, the explicit presence of gender or sexuality, paternal or romantic relationships with male characters, and the punishment or containment of the female athlete. These themes are then analyzed for their presence and meaning in the film genre, including how existing heteronormative film structures are present in female protagonist sport films and how such ideas are reflections of wider societal values. This exposes how the continued use of such heteronormative themes perpetuates stereotypes of female athleticism. After understanding how these themes take shape and what they mean for the genre, this paper then highlights examples of an emergent more feminist genre, promotes alternative filmmaking methods and progressive change to the portrayal of female athletes in sport film.

This paper will analyze the two films Mississippi Burning and BlacKkKlansman, as well as some of the historical contexts surrounding them, in order to unpack the various aspects of police brutality, protest culture, and ideals of reform shown within. Furthermore, it will investigate the impact of diverging from history on the perception of policing units, and the importance of more accurate narratives like BlacKkKlansman in popular culture. <br/> To find evidence that BlacKkKlansman is a much more accurate narrative regarding law enforcement and the effects that sentiments seen in Mississippi Burning have on modern day events, a comprehensive research analysis was conducted. Both films were watched multiple times and analyzed thoroughly, and further research was done to understand not only the narrative elements of the plot, but how the visual aspects strengthen the arguments both films try to make. Scholarly articles on contexts surrounding the subjects of the film were also analyzed, including topics on the FBI, Martin Luther King Jr, and police brutality. Through this, it became evident that Mississippi Burning overlooked most of the reality of the events the film is loosely based upon in order to present a white savior story, whereas BlacKkKlansman addresses the existing prejudices head on while also showing the relation the events have to a more modern context, specifically surrounding the Trump administration.

Can You Hear Me is a short documentary which seeks to give voice to the experiences of trans and nonbinary students in ASU classrooms. What I present in this project are the direct spoken accounts of the feelings, thoughts and frustrations of transgender and nonbinary students as they navigate university classrooms at Arizona State University. Can You Hear Me serves as a representational platform for trans and nonbinary students to communicate their experiences to other students, staff and faculty in the hopes that it might help make classroom spaces more inclusive.

Horror films are typically comprised of three specific features: jump scares, gore, and suspense shots of a shadowy figure creeping up on an unaware victim. These three elements are some of the hallmarks of what defines the horror genre as they are methods that have proven successful in eliciting a bodily response within audience members, which is crucial to a horror movie being considered successful. However, these elements are also very polarizing. Individuals that enjoy horror often like these three things, while those who don’t appreciate the genre often cite over the top gore, distain for jump scares, and the anxiety that accompanies those suspenseful shots as primary reasons for avoiding horror. Due to the fact that those spectators who like horror tend to be in the minority, horror tends to have a very weak crossover appeal, thus limiting the audience interest while also being very unpopular among critics as well.
Interestingly, three recent horror films have achieved both critical acclaim and popularity among all audiences, horror and non-horror fans alike. Get Out, A Quiet Place, and It Follows are all noticeably lacking in the three features that commonly make a horror film “successful”, and yet it would be difficult to argue that they aren't successful horror films given that they have received critical acclaim, impressive box office returns, and have a strong crossover appeal. Therefore, they must use alternative methods to achieve the bodily response of fear that is necessary to be successful in the genre. I argue that these films put the audience member in a position that mirrors what Forced Lacanian Hysteric Neurosis and that this positioning produces the bodily response that is necessary for a horror movie to be successful. This manifestation has the additional benefit of allowing those spectators who do not like the fundamental aspects of horror (jump scares, gore, and suspenseful shots) to find the pleasure of horror without experiencing on-screen events that might cause them notable distress.
