Upon analyzing the literature that is available on refugee populations in conjunction with our personal experiences with these populations, we ultimately decided to develop a mobile app that targeted the source of the numerous disparities we saw. These disparities ranged from increased prevalence of chronic diseases to difficulty in going to doctor's appointments due to transportation challenges. We focused on the three areas of government assistance, clinical health, and general well-being through our mobile app, Refugee Aid Initiative. This mobile app is designed to provide refugee populations with the resources necessary to build healthier, happier, and more independent lives for themselves and their families. Here, we focus on not only highlighting resources that are available but also adding supplementary information that helps refugee populations fully take advantage of the resources that are available to them.

The purpose of this project was to garner a greater understanding of the form, function, and uses of school as well as community gardens. Worldwide, school and community gardens are used to promote health, nutrition, and some aspects of education. I wished to extend my knowledge of these gardens to greater lengths by building and incorporating a school garden in a community that was underderserving. Along the way I also sought to better my understanding of how to help communities through the knowledge and aid of experts and other community members. By doing this, I would hopefully both improve that community as well as understand the difficulties and problems that stand in the way of greater school garden incorporation.

This study uses a survey-based approach to study the perception of water quality and sanitation habits in Cusibamba and Totora, Peru. The survey covered important aspects such as how the water tastes, looks, smells, where it comes from, how it is purified (boiled or chlorinated), and if the respondent is satisfied with their water. Participants reported that the water is of good quality overall and usually available (although scarcity may be an issue). They also reported good hygiene practices overall, and that they boil the water prior to using it for cooking, cleaning, or drinking. Educational information about ensuring water quality and sanitation would have been distributed in addition to in-person lessons on how to purify water if the COVID pandemic did not occur. These activities could not have been performed without risk to the communities and risk to those traveling to Peru.

The Founders lab is a year-long program that gives its students an opportunity to participate in a unique team-based, experiential Barrett honors thesis project to design and apply marketing and sales strategies, as well as business and financial models to create and launch a new business. Initially, our team focused on creating a product that would provide those who have received basic genetic testing from services such as 23andMe with nutrition, exercise, and health/wellness educational resources. Over time, we transitioned our focus to creating a community forum that would also provide those resources to people who had not received basic genetic testing, but were still interested in accessing educational resources about the specific conditions that basic genetic testing services provide reports for. To accomplish this, we have produced a website that allows users to post content and interact with each other.

The Refugee Education and Clinic Team (REACT) is a local organization led by students at Arizona State University and the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine with the purpose of improving the health of refugees and asylees. One way in which REACT aims to improve the health of refugees and asylees is through health education workshops, which inform refugees about health conditions and management options. The purpose of this project was to analyze how REACT’s health education workshop about obesity impacted refugees’ understanding of healthy living. This project implemented a pre- and post-presentation survey at REACT’s obesity workshop to measure refugees’ understanding of healthy living. Overall, a pre-existing understanding of the importance of healthy eating and daily exercise was measured and an improvement in their understanding of the symptoms associated with obesity was recorded.

Exercise is widely recognized for its myriad of health benefits, particularly in the realm of chronic disease prevention and treatment. Despite this knowledge, exercise remains significantly underutilized in the United States, with only a quarter of the population meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines set by the Department of Health

Exercise is widely recognized for its myriad of health benefits, particularly in the realm of chronic disease prevention and treatment. Despite this knowledge, exercise remains significantly underutilized in the United States, with only a quarter of the population meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines set by the Department of Health and Human Services (Piercy et al., 2018). Recent research has spotlighted specific regions known as Blue Zones, where natural movement is incorporated into daily lives and populations are characterized by increased longevity and improved health outcomes, including lower rates of chronic diseases. This study aimed to explore and compare exercise behaviors between the United States and the Ikaria Blue Zone in Greece, investigating their potential implications for a longer lifespan and enhanced health. Employing ethnographic methods, including immersive observation, semi-structured, qualitative interviews with locals, and the distribution of validated International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) surveys, comprehensive data on exercise habits within the Ikarian population was collected in November 2023. The findings from this study shed light on alternative forms of physical activity that have proven successful in populations with increased longevity. By identifying and understanding these practices, there is an opportunity to implement them in the United States, potentially contributing to improved exercise adherence and the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. This research underscores the significance of cross-cultural insights in developing effective strategies to promote healthier lifestyles and enhance overall well-being.

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is one of the world’s coldest capital cities with roughly 1.5 million residents. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is one of the world’s coldest capital cities with roughly 1.5 million residents. About fifty percent of the city’s residents are off the electrical grid and millions continue to live nomadic lifestyles, raising livestock for food. Problematically, residents often turn to raw coal - Mongolia’s largest export - as a means to cook food and stay warm. Project Koyash is a philanthropic engineering initiative that was founded in the Arizona State University Program Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) to combat the air quality crisis plaguing the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar. Koyash has already deployed 13 fully functional and autonomous units consisting of a solar powered air filtration system in Ulaanbaatar. Koyash innovated a solution of solar panels, air filters, batteries, inverters, PCB Arduinos, and other necessary components for providing crucial humanitarian services. The team is working to send more units and develop a local supply chain for the systems. This thesis project explores the development of Koyash, assesses the human health implications of air pollution, and reflects on the entire process.
