The interpersonal, subjective, and communication skills we carry with us are crucial to our professional successes, sometimes even more crucial than the technical skills we use to execute tasks. The engineering industry is wildly technical and competitive in order to define a better tomorrow for the human population. However, such a technical field often neglects the use of these soft skills, both originating from students, employees, and companies. In this thesis, I delve into the importance and various applications of soft skills within the engineering industry, the presence of a gap among engineers' expected versus actual soft skill usage, and if anything can be done to mend that gap.

For this study, my overarching goal was to understand the possibilities of humanity’s future in space exploration. Addressing the future of space exploration not only opens doors for a multitude of discoveries but may answer questions that can be essential to our survival on Earth. This study, more specifically, aimed to determine how college students at Arizona State University, engineering and astronomy students in particular, visualize the future of space exploration, as in the future, they will become the leading experts at the forefront of all space-related developments. The method through which I have conducted this study is a short survey, consisting of a variety of questions, designed to encourage students to develop their own unique interpretations of space exploration and ultimately, its imminent future. The results ultimately demonstrated that most participants in the study believed that political obstacles were the most prevalent concern in the further development of space exploration. There also appeared to be a moderate outlook on the future success and vitality of space exploration among student scientists and engineers. From a statistical standpoint, there appeared to be no alarming difference of opinion between these two ASU student groups.

Examining temperament using person-centered methods, particularly in stressful contexts, may improve our understanding of vulnerability to adolescent emotional problems. The

Approximately 20% of youth experience mental health problems (Vasileva et al., 2021), and dimensions of early childhood temperament, specifically negative affectivity and effortful control, predict later mental health (Rothbart, 2007). Examining temperament using person-centered methods, particularly in stressful contexts, may improve our understanding of vulnerability to adolescent emotional problems. The current study examined whether specific patterns, or types, of infant temperament longitudinally predicted adolescent anxiety and depression symptoms and whether family relationship stress moderated this association. We hypothesized that infants with a Negative Dysregulated temperament would experience higher anxiety and depression symptoms in later childhood compared to those with a Typical Expressive temperament, and that family relationship stress would exacerbate this link. In an ongoing-longitudinal study of families with twins (N=563, 51% female, 29.8% Hispanic/Latinx, 58.4% White; Lemery-Chalfant et al., 2019), primary caregivers (PCs) reported on infant temperament at 12 months (IBQ; Gartstein & Rothbart, 2003, α=.74-.90). In a prior study (Murillo et al., 2023), latent profile analysis yielded three infant temperament types: Negative Dysregulated, Positive Well-Regulated, and Typical Expressive. PCs reported on partner strain (PSS; Schuster, Kessler, & Asseltine, 1990, α=.87) and family conflict (FCS; Porter & O’Leary, 1980, α=.80) at age 8 and a composite of these two measures represented Family Relationship Stress (r = .689). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to form Depression and Anxiety outcome composites based on PC (4 reports), secondary caregiver (2 reports), teacher (2 reports), and self-report (3 reports) measures of depression and anxiety symptoms collected from ages 8-11 (HBQ, Armstrong & Goldstein, 2003; BPI, Measelle et al., 1998, all α’s > .80). We randomly selected one twin from each pair and conducted regression analyses, and then used the second twin for an internal replication. Family relationship stress had a significant main effect on both anxiety and depressive symptoms. The Negative Dysregulated temperament type did not predict anxiety and depression at ages 8-11, however, it interacted with family relationship stress to predict anxiety and depression in 1 of 2 samples. When family relationship stress was low, the Negative Dysregulated type was significantly associated with higher anxiety and depression outcomes compared to the Typical Expressive type, and high family relationship stress was significantly associated with lower depression outcomes. Elucidating these longitudinal relations is important for informing early intervention and reducing the burden of adolescent psychopathology.

In this dissertation, the nanofabrication process is characterized for fabrication of nanostructure on surface of silicon and gallium phosphide using silica nanosphere lithography (SNL) and metal assisted chemical etching (MACE) process. The SNL process allows fast process time and well defined silica nanosphere monolayer by spin-coating process after mixing N,N-dimethyl-formamide (DMF) solvent. The MACE process achieves the high aspect ratio structure fabrication using the reaction between metal and wet chemical. The nanostructures are fabricated on Si surface for enhanced light management, but, without proper surface passivation those gains hardly impact the performance of the solar cell. The surface passivation of nanostructures is challenging, not only due to larger surface areas and aspect ratios, but also has a direct result of the nanofabrication processes. In this research, the surface passivation of silicon nanostructures is improved by modifying the silica nanosphere lithography (SNL) and the metal assisted chemical etching (MACE) processes, frequently used to fabricate nanostructures. The implementation of a protective silicon oxide layer is proposed prior to the lithography process to mitigate the impact of the plasma etching during the SNL. Additionally, several adhesion layers are studied, chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti) with gold (Au), used in the MACE process. The metal contamination is one of main damage and Ti makes the mitigation of metal contamination. Finally, a new chemical etching step is introduced, using potassium hydroxide at room temperature, to smooth the surface of the nanostructures after the MACE process. This chemical treatment allows to improve passivation by surface area control and removing surface defects. In this research, I demonstrate the Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3) passivation on nanostructure using atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. 10nm of Al2O3 layer makes effective passivation on nanostructure with optimized post annealing in forming gas (N2/H2) environment. However, 10nm thickness is not suitable for hetero structure because of carrier transportation. For carrier transportation, ultrathin Al2O3 (≤ 1nm) layer is used for passivation, but effective passivation is not achieved because of insufficient hydrogen contents. This issue is solved to use additional ultrathin SiO2 (1nm) below Al2O3 layer and hydrogenation from doped a-Si:H. Moreover, the nanostructure is creased on gallium phosphide (GaP) by SNL and MACE process. The fabrication process is modified by control of metal layer and MACE solution.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether athletes were impacted by wearing a mask and playing competitively, by measuring their mental skills (confidence, anxiety, and focus) levels. This study surveyed 7 high school students who played sports in the year 2020-2021. They were surveyed using the “state sport confidence inventory”, “sport competition anxiety test”, and a created focus survey (Appendix D). The participants were asked a series of questions reflecting back on before wearing a mask and questions pertaining to how they feel about wearing a mask in sports. The survey asked the participants specifically about their mental skills. These mental skills are important factors in optimal performance of an athlete, athletes should have high confidence, low anxiety, and high focus levels (Lautenbach et al., 2016). The results showed that athletes had high confidence, low anxiety, and high focus; athletes were more worried about getting the proper amount of oxygen and fixing their mask. This suggests that the athletes who participated in the survey were mentally tough (Bédard Thom et al., 2021) and resilient (Sarkar & Fletcher, 2014).

Social media has become a prominent part of people’s life worldwide. It allows for easy communication and connection between family, friends, and even complete strangers. It has provided for an increased global interconnectedness and allows people to form new relationships. Despite these positives, there are also negative effects of social media, including its danger to mental health. With increased social media use, it is possible to develop an addiction, similar to any substance addiction. People may also experience various mental health disorders, like depression and anxiety disorders. The purpose of this review was to identify a clear relationship between social media use and the development of anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders is a general term, encompassing the different types, but the main types focused on in this review are generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety. This review also incorporates information on age in order to clarify if certain age groups are more affected by social media use than others.

The world faces significant environmental and social challenges due to high economic development, population growth, industrialization, rapid urbanization, and unsustainable consumption. Global communities are taking the necessary measures to confront these international challenges and applying sustainable development principles across all sectors. Construction is a critical driving instrument of economic activity, and to achieve sustainable development, it is vital to transform conventional construction into a more sustainable model. The research investigated sustainable construction perceptions in Kuwait, a rapidly growing country with a high volume of construction activities. Kuwait has ambitious plans to transition into a more sustainable economic development model, and the construction industry needs to align with these plans. This research aims to identify the characteristics of sustainable construction applications in the Kuwaiti construction market, such as awareness, current perceptions, drivers and barriers, and the construction regulations' impact. The research utilized a qualitative approach to answer research questions and deliver research objectives by conducting eleven Semi-structured interviews with experienced professionals in the Kuwaiti construction market to collect rich data that reflects insights and understandings of the Kuwaiti construction industry. The Thematic analysis of the data resulted in six themes and one sub-theme that presented reflections, insights, and perspectives on sustainable construction perceptions in the Kuwaiti construction market. The research findings reflected poor sustainable construction awareness and poor environmental and social application in the construction industry, the determinant role of construction regulations in promoting sustainable construction. and barriers and drivers to sustainable construction applications. The research concluded with answers to research questions, delivery of research objectives, and an explanation of sustainable construction perceptions in the Kuwaiti construction market.

Delamination of solar module interfaces often occurs in field-tested solar modules after decades of service due to environmental stressors such as humidity. In the presence of water, the interfaces between the encapsulant and the cell, glass, and backsheet all experience losses of adhesion, exposing the module to accelerated degradation. Understanding the relation between interfacial adhesion and water content inside photovoltaic modules can help mitigate detrimental power losses. Water content measurements via water reflectometry detection combined with 180° peel tests were used to study adhesion of module materials exposed to damp heat and dry heat conditions. The effect of temperature, cumulative water dose, and water content on interfacial adhesion between ethylene vinyl acetate and (1) glass, (2) front of the cell, and (3) backsheet was studied. Temperature and time decreased adhesion at all these interfaces. Water content in the sample during the measurement showed significant decreases in adhesion for the Backsheet/Ethylene vinyl acetate interface. Water dose showed little effect for the Glass/ Ethylene vinyl acetate and Backsheet/ Ethylene vinyl acetate interfaces, but there was significant adhesion loss with water dose at the front cell busbar/encapsulant interface. Initial tensile test results to monitor the effects of the mechanical properties ethylene vinyl acetate and backsheet showed water content increasing the strength of ethylene vinyl acetate during plastic deformation but no change in the strength of the backsheet properties. This mechanical property change is likely inducing variation along the peel interface to possibly convolute the adhesion measurements conducted or to explain the variation seen for the water saturated and dried peel test sample types.

Electrical nerve stimulation is a promising drug-free technology that could treat a variety of ailments and disorders. Methods like Vagus Nerve Stimulation have been used for decades to treat disorders like epilepsy, and research with non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation has shown similar effects as its invasive counterpart. Non-invasive nerve stimulation methods like vagus nerve stimulation could help millions of people treat and manage various disorders.

This study observed the effects of three different non-invasive nerve stimulation paradigms in human participants. The first study analyzed the safety and efficacy of transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation in healthy humans using a bilateral stimulation protocol with uniquely designed dry-hydrogel electrodes. Results demonstrate bilateral auricular vagal nerve stimulation has significant effects on specific parameters of autonomic activity and is safe and well tolerated. The second study analyzed the effects of non-invasive electrical stimulation of a region on the side of the neck that contains the Great Auricular Nerve and the Auricular Branch of the Vagus Nerve called the tympanomastoid fissure on golf hitting performance in healthy golfers. Results did not show significant effects on hitting performance or physiological activity, but the nerve stimulation had significant effects on reducing state-anxiety and improving the quality of feel of each shot. The third study analyzed the effects of non-invasive nerve stimulation of cervical nerves on the back of the neck on putting performance of yips-affected golfers. Results demonstrated that cervical nerve stimulation had significant effects on improving putting performance but did not have significant effects on physiological activity. Data from these studies show there are potential applications for non-invasive electrical nerve stimulation for healthy and athletic populations. Future research should also examine the effects of these stimulation methods in clinical populations.
