Adolescents' clay sculpture has been researched significantly less than their drawings. I spent approximately six weeks in a ceramics class located at a high school in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona in order to explore how gender affected subject matter preference in students' three dimensional clay sculpture. Gender studies on children's drawings reveal that males favor fantasy, violence, aggression, sports, and power, while females favor realism, domestic and social experience, physical appearance, care and concern, nature and animals. My three main research questions in this study were 1) How did gender affect subject matter in adolescents' three-dimensional clay sculpture? 2) What similarities or differences existed between females' and males' subject matter preference in sculpture and their subject matter preference in drawing? 3) Assuming that significant gender differences existed, how successful would the students be with a project that favored opposite gender themed subject matter? I found that although males and females had gender differences between subject matter in their clay sculptures, there were exceptions. In addition, the nature of clay affected this study in many ways. Teachers and students need to be well prepared for issues that arise during construction of clay sculptures so that students are able to use clay to fully express their ideas.

This project uses the tintype process to create contemporary portraits. The tintype is a nineteenth century photographic process that creates a direct positive on a sheet of metal. The images were created using the same process from the 1800s, as well as a more contemporary method. The natural imperfections caused by both processes were used to help examine the intimacy and emotion present in the portraits.

Whitney Nicoson’s Honors thesis exhibition, Tripoli Shores, is a collection of photographs that stems from an initial interest in portraiture—a desire to observe and render the change of identity shown by the artist and her mother during a particularly difficult period in their lives. While experiencing paralleling hardships, the two spent time together living at her grandfather’s cottages along the St Lawrence River in Upstate NY. The traditional notion of portraiture gradually grew beyond the representation of self to the documentation of the space. This space was once the epitome of structure, stability, and strength. Over the years, neglect and disrepair caused an inevitable breakdown in the structure. Nicoson seeks to create a permanent documentation of a home that is changing. With an interest in how the photographs of space relates to the change seen in the artist and her mother, the exhibition pursues the idea of forming identity in a place that is also forming its own.

United by this defining event, each of these families involved in the project come from diverse backgrounds and have faced obstacles unique to their own history. Since late 2013, they shared with me the struggles and rewards that followed a decision made early in the mother's life. Through an exhibition of photography, audio, video, and text, I aimed to communicate these stories to expand the dialogue surrounding teen pregnancy

This project is a visual presentation on the value of music education in public schools. With cutbacks in funding for education, arts programs such as orchestra or band are often the first to face budget restrictions or be eliminated altogether. Many schools and administrators deem arts programs as less essential

This project is a visual presentation on the value of music education in public schools. With cutbacks in funding for education, arts programs such as orchestra or band are often the first to face budget restrictions or be eliminated altogether. Many schools and administrators deem arts programs as less essential to a student’s education because they do not directly teach core subjects such as math, science or reading. This project explains why reducing or eliminating funding for arts programs is ultimately detrimental to students. A high quality musical education brings great developmental benefits in a variety of skills such as language development, memory learning and special understanding. Students trained in music also have shown higher scores on standardized tests. Additionally, music programs provide a creative outlet for students that can help relieve stress and provide an opportunity for personal expression and a sense of identity. This project is organized into three sections. Part I discusses the lack of funding for fine arts programs in schools and the affordability of playing a stringed instrument. Part II dives into the academic, cognitive and behavioral benefits of an education in music. Finally, Part III discusses potential solutions to the problem and showcases examples of out-of-school music programs. The final form of the project is displayed online through a program called Readymag, a digital tool for presenting projects, which allows for the written aspect of the project to fall seamlessly with the visual component. The visual component of the project is made of photographs captured on site at interviews, performances and practices, as well as in a studio.

Dante's Divine Comedy has been around for eight centuries, and its imaginative vision of the afterlife truly resembled the ideology of 13th century. However, time has passed, and now, in 21st century, the societies have made major technological advancements that distinct themselves from the past. Consequently, with recent technology in

Dante's Divine Comedy has been around for eight centuries, and its imaginative vision of the afterlife truly resembled the ideology of 13th century. However, time has passed, and now, in 21st century, the societies have made major technological advancements that distinct themselves from the past. Consequently, with recent technology in mind, one could imagine an afterlife with robotic Minos and Cerberus, and possibly the circles of hell residing within an earth resembling death star that is controlled automatically using artificial intelligence. The symbolic representation of punishments could have been altered throughout time, and more recent criminals may be seen in the circles of hell. By identifying and correlating contemporary style of art with a classic literature such as Dante's Divine Comedy, one could better understand the essence of literature without the disconnect from current world, and appreciate the deep underlying ideology that Dante offers within his literature. Sculptures that encompass nine circles of hell and heaven would demonstrate structural aptitude and symbolic representation of what Dante would have imagined if he were to write his literature in the 21st century. Throughout the project, connection between the literature and the sculptures is observed. Some of the sculptures were meant to be abstract and some literal. Even though the medium used in each of the sculptures were different, the correlation between each sculpture unifies everything together into one theme, Dante's Divine Comedy.

My work revisits this accident and the aftermath of my condition. Since I now live with a great gap in my memory, I wanted to explore the idea of absence. Absence of memories and absence of self. How does one feel when a gap is left in their life story? How does one talk about it or feel any emotions when they do not remember a significant part of their life? How is one’s identity affected by this lack of self? Familiar Places: Ghosts of a Memory is a thesis exhibition, presented in Gallery 100 in Tempe, AZ, accompanied by a written investigation into the function of photography in the home and art. This project is a diaristic photographic record including images of myself, my family, my environment, and mementos or objects that embody family history. I am interested in what we hold onto to keep memories and create our "home". I moved frequently growing up so my sense of home became firmly grounded in family, tradition, and the things we kept close, making home a practiced space not a place. This thesis project explores how material culture, including photographs, is used in creating the space of the home. Questions regarding the nature of the photograph as a memory keeping device or memory trigger is investigated to understand their usefulness and accuracy to the memory. A deeper examination of the difference between an artist's photograph of family and home versus the family photograph is discussed and presented by utilizing installations in the exhibition.
