Description
My thesis project is a 26 minute 46 second film that documents the Arizona State hockey team's first season as an NCAA Division I program. ASU hockey was formerly a club team that competed in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), but that all changed in the fall of 2014 after the program received a donation. The documentary explores the significance of the team, the emotion of the players and staff, and the results of the season.

Each year, a select few minor league baseball players are chosen to attend the Arizona Fall League, a development league within Major League Baseball that hones the next generation of players, coaches, managers, and even umpires. These players make up the top talent currently in the minor leagues from each of Major League Baseball's 30 organizations. Of the thousands in the minors, just seven players from each organization can go to this extra six-week season, and learn to play alongside the best future talent the sport has to offer. On Deck: Inside the Arizona Fall League is a short documentary that looks at some of these players, as they continue their baseball journey that they hope leads them one day to the Majors. OUT Photo Series is a portrait photo series of LGBTQIA+ individuals that explores the differences between closeted experiences and "out" experiences through two distinct portraits. Instead of using LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual and more) this paper will use the word Queer, whose historical context will be reviewed later. This paper begins by outlining the background for this project, including its inspiration. This paper will then review the creative process and technical process for the entire project. This paper will finally close by discussing takeaways from each participants and from the project as a whole.

This thesis documentary film takes a look at the dysfunctional but ongoing relationship between Twitter and sports journalism. The foundation of this relationship's dysfunction is what I have coined as the Twitter Outrage Cycle. In this cycle a sports broadcasting personality comments on a matter while on-air. Next, the program's audience where the comments were spoken becomes offended by the statement. After that, the offended audience members express their outrage on social media, most namely Twitter. Finally the cycle culminates with the public outrage pressuring networks and its executives to either suspended or fire the individual that said the controversial statements. This cycle began to occur on a more consistent basis starting in 2012. It became such a regular occurrence that many on-air talent figures have noticed and taken precautionary measures to either avoid or confront the Outrage Cycles. This documentary uses the voice of seven figures within the sports media and online interaction forum. Notable using the voices of three notable individuals that currently have a prominent voice in sports journalism. As well as a neutral social media curator who clearly explains the psyche behind these outraged viewer's mindsets. Through these four main voices their ideals and opinions on the matter weave together, disagree with each other at times but ultimately help the viewer come to an understanding of why these Outrage Cycles occur and what needs to be done in order for them to cease. We Should Talk: The Relationship Between Twitter and Sports Journalism is a documentary film that looks to illustrate a seemingly minimal part of many people's lives that when taken into perspective many people look at in a very serious light.

The sport of tennis is played in over 100 countries and over 256 Division I collegiate programs across the United States. Each program contains 8-10 individual athletes for both men's and women's rosters. When first observing a roster from any Division I program, people will see that many of the athletes are international. Courts of Cultures is a documentary about the lives of five select tennis athletes of how they have adjusted to life in the United States, the shift in cultures and the transition into playing in collegiate tennis. Makey Rakotomalala (France), Pierre Louis Dodens (Switzerland), Thomas Wright (Great Britain), Lauryn John-Baptiste (England), and Tereza Kolarova (Czech Republic) all share their experiences of coming to Arizona State University and give insight into what life adjustments they have made not only for the college lifestyle, but international living as well. Head coaches Matt Hill (men's) and Sheila McInerney (women's) also speak to the recruitment of international students and how new technology has made the process simpler. In many countries, you either have to go professional in tennis out of high school, or toss away the racquet and just go to college for academics. Being able to play tennis and go to school benefits these athletes because they are able to improve on their skills and earn a degree. Each athlete featured in this film has a different story and a different background, but they all find commonality on the tennis court. A worldwide sport that has brought worldwide talent to Tempe. Courts of Cultures was directed, photographed, edited, and produced by Blaine McCormick along with narration by Scotty Gange.

FastStat is a responsive website designed to work on any handheld, laptop, or desktop device. It serves as a first step into statistical calculations, educating the user on the basics of statistical analysis, and guiding them as they perform analyses of their own using built-in calculators. The calculators available can perform z tests, t tests, chi square tests, and analysis of variance tests to determine significant characteristics of the user's data. Outputted data includes means, standard deviations, significance levels, applicable statistics, and worded results indicating the outcome of the performed test. With its clean design, FastStat directs the user in an intuitive manner to fill in the information needed, giving clear indications of what types of values are needed where and flagging descriptive error messages if any inputted values are incorrect. FastStat also implements a halt to calculations if any errors are found, which saves time by avoiding impossible calculations. Once complete, FastStat outputs a variety of information of use to the user in a clearly labeled manner. The calculators are designed in such a way that the user will know what information they will get out of the calculator before performing any calculations at all. Aside from the calculators, FastStat includes introductory pages designed to get users familiar with common statistical terms and the associated tests, solidifying its purpose as an introductory tool. All tests are described by their typical uses, necessary inputs, calculated outputs, and extra notes of importance. Many terms are defined for the purpose of statistics, complete with examples to help educate the user on the concepts. With the information available, even the newest statistician can learn and begin performing tests almost immediately.

Battle For Arizona Avenue: The History of the Chandler-Hamilton Rivalry is an honors thesis project that aims to serve as a historical hub for the two schools involved. Chandler and Hamilton High School are two public high schools in Chandler, Ariz., who are among the most successful football programs in the state despite sitting just 3.8 miles apart from each other. The thesis is housed on a multimedia website, which uses written pieces, photos, videos and other multimedia elements to break down the history of both programs. Chandler is one of the oldest schools in the state, opening in 1914 and often lagging athletically until large population growth led to Hamilton opening in 1998. Hamilton experienced immediate success both as a football program individually and in the rivalry, taking the first 17 match ups between the two schools and winning seven titles in the now 18 years they have been in existence. Chandler has since come and shifted the tide, winning five of the last six games in the rivalry and claiming two titles in the last three years. It's rare for two programs so close in proximity to have so much success not just on the football field but academically, so the thesis looked at the various reasons why. The thesis is about more than just the two schools, however. It dives into what a rivalry means, as well as the overall impact of high school football and the various factors that led into this meaning as much to people as it did. These individuals have always inspired me because they have faced many challenges and yet they still go through life with a smile on their face. I believe they all deserve recognition for what they have accomplished during the games and outside of them. I wanted to give them this recognition. In my documentary, I interviewed five athletes, three of which are siblings. The first athlete I interviewed was Jesse McGirl, who is a star track and field athlete. In his part of the video, I talk about his strategy as well as his involvement in the games. I also talk about him being a Global Messenger and how he travels the world in order to spread the message of the Special Olympics. The next athlete was David Fromh, who started competing in the games in 1978. In his section, I talk to him about his relationships with his coaches and teammates as well as the strategy he uses while running. He is one of the most positive athletes out there, and I really emphasize on his positivity. The last set of interviews I did was with the Meagan, Emily, and Quincy Jones, three siblings who all suffer from intellectual disabilities. David and Gena Jones adopted them when they were young and their story is a true inspiration. The family is the main focus of my documentary, so they have three parts: Early Life, Special Olympics, and Future. The Early Life focuses on how David and Gena raised their kids and their high school life. The Special Olympics section focuses on their success at the games and the Future section is about the siblings' interests outside of the games. Along with my athlete stories, I have an introduction and conclusion as well as a brief history section describing the founding of the Special Olympics. I had a great time making this project, and I am very fortunate to be able to tell such inspirational stories.

The Color Blindness Booklet for Toddlers was created for parents, teachers and guardians to test their children to check if they showed any signs of color blindness. The booklet was designed to be used with an adult and a child within the age range from 3 to 6. The adult reads the story to the child while the child traces the path through a differently colored line path in a large circle filled with select and specific colors that are commonly seen in color blind deficiency problems. Each page contains a hint to bring one animal across the differently colored line. The book is filled with fun and entertaining graphics to keep the child interested and amused. After the adult and the child finish up the book the adult then counts the amount of pages the child cannot complete and refers to the amount of pages that is problematic (Which is located in the very back.) The book is an eight inch by eight inch saddle stitch printed on 100# cover for the title page and 80# text for the guts. This book was created to be used in a school and home setting. It is easy to reproduce and it would be affordable for schools to buy large quantities. This book was actually printed out and presented to the committee. This book was a successful project because there is nothing like this being currently used on the market. The Color Blindness Booklet for Toddlers could possibly help parents find color deficiencies in an early stage of the child's life which would prevent future problems and possibly even learning disabilities.
