Effective professional development has been shown to improve instruction and increase student academic achievement. The Train the Trainer professional development model is often chosen by the state Department of Education for its efficiency and cost effectiveness of delivering training to schools and districts widely distributed throughout the state. This is a study of the Train the Trainer component of an innovative K12 professional development model designed to meet the needs of the state's lowest performing schools that served some of the state's most marginalized students. Pursuing a Vygotzkian social constructivist framework, the model was developed and informed by its stakeholders, providing training that was collaborative, job-embedded, ongoing, and continuously adapted to meet the needs of the School Improvement Grant participants. Schools in the multi-case study were awarded the federal ARRA School Improvement Grant in 2010. Focus questions include: What influence does the Train the Trainer component have on classroom instruction specifically as it relates to formative assessment? and To what extent does the trainer support the implementation of the Train the Trainer professional development at the classroom level? The action research study took place from August 2011 to February 2012 and used a mixed-methods research design.

High-quality learning environments are critical to support students’ learning and development. This study supported eight lead teachers of Starting Strong classrooms in four different early learning programs to try to improve teachers’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and use of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) within their classrooms. Four Starting Strong supports were evaluated during this research, including an asynchronous video series, coaching with use of the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Report, and Community of Practice (CoP) meetings. The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scales, Third Edition (ECERS-3) was used to measure the overall quality of preschool classrooms before and after the intervention. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were also conducted to measure participants' knowledge and self-efficacy. While there was no change in participant knowledge of DAP or self-efficacy, there was significant improvement in the ECERS-3 scores from the Spring to the Fall assessment. All participants reported the four Starting Strong supports as being very useful and offered suggestions for improvements, explicitly suggesting consistency and shared learning experiences. Collectively, the Starting Strong supports helped the teachers apply their knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood education in establishing quality preschool environments.

My research explored two issues in leadership development: how busy executives can sustainably learn with flexibility and efficiency and how to cultivate a grace-based approach to leadership. This is a dissertation in practice that offers an alternative format from traditional research yet still advances professional knowledge, rigorous thinking and complex problem-solving. This reimagined manuscript includes a multi-modal presentation of the theory, methods, analysis and findings for an emerging leadership concept and an improved direction for mobile learning research. These findings can be experienced by listening to an embedded podcast series and reading draft articles for academic and business media journals that speak to the audience of influencers in my professional context of leadership researchers, advisors and coaches. The learning innovation involved is a podcast called Giving Grace Matters that includes narrative and interviews with high-performing executives about a grace-based approach to leadership, and the qualitative analysis of these interviews served as the basis for constructing the knowledge about this leadership concept using three guiding theories: Planned Behavior, Self-Determination, and Intentional Change. The research identified the novel concept of a grace-based approach to leadership that can be applied in organizations as well as the need for further evaluation of how a flexible learning framework for microlearning experiences, such as podcasts, can be intentionally designed.

Implementation of a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) has proven to be a ‘big hairy audacious goal’ within the literature and applied settings. Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) has utilized a similar framework and was represented under the MTSS umbrella. If implemented with fidelity, both MTSS and PBIS have been shown to have positive outcomes for learners, staff members, and school systems. To implement one component of PBIS, a coaching procedure which consisted of instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback was provided for three middle school teachers. Two Tier 1 PBIS classroom management practices were the focus of the coaching intervention—opportunities to respond and encouragement of appropriate behavior through positive points of contact. This study utilized a mixed methods approach which incorporated a single-subject design, specifically a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across participants, to assess the effects of the coaching intervention on the implementation of the two classroom management practices, student on-task behavior, and the social validity of the intervention. Findings indicated an increase in both practices as well as an increase in student on-task behavior, from baseline to intervention phases of the study. Additionally, all participants reported high levels of social validity of the coaching intervention. The discussion was focused on triangulation of the quantitative and qualitative data, which indicated these findings were complementary. Connections of the findings to the research literature, implications for future practice and research, limitations, and conclusions have been provided.

ABSTRACTLeading change is one of the most daunting tasks for K–12 site leaders. It is well established that the site leaders’ influence on student learning is profound, and the importance of implementing changes to improve practice is paramount. This action research study aimed to examine how a research-based professional development and coaching program could impact site leaders’ attitudes, beliefs, practices, and the teachers’ perceptions. The study occurred over 14 weeks at a public elementary school. The intervention contained two professional development sessions, which included learning and planned implementation of research-based strategies and weekly coaching sessions once the school year started. The theories that supported this study included change leadership, distributed leadership, transformational leadership, social cognitive theory, sensemaking, and literature on veteran teachers. A mixed methods action research design using quantitative and qualitative data was gathered simultaneously through a pre- and postintervention collection. Data was gathered from Monday Memos, a staff meeting observation, staff meeting agendas, coaching field notes, the Staff Perception Survey, and interviews which were all used to analyze then address the research questions. During the qualitative data analysis, the codes were categorized, and themes were examined to determine any shifts from the initial data compared to the postintervention data. Due to the small sample size and lack of data normality on the Staff Perception Survey, instead of a conventional t test, the more conservative nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test was applied to assess pre-to-post differences. Results indicated no statistically significant differences between the pre- and postintervention survey among individual items or collective construct items (i.e., teacher voice, shared vision, removing obstacles, and building culture). The results suggest that there was a shift in how the site leaders conceptualized their role as a leader of change through the coaching program intervention. It was expanded, hopeful, and the site leaders saw the increased weight of their role in the impact of leading change. Further, through the research-based coaching program, site leaders changed their practice regarding their consistency and both expanded and shifted change strategies. In conclusion, limitations give perspective while implications for practice and research provide for an exciting future.

This mixed methods action research study was conducted in a Title I, K-12 public charter school with the purpose of exploring teachers’ capacities to implement student-centered learning after participating in effective professional development (PD). Participants attended a PD cycle where the staff chose the topic, learning was sustained over a three-month period, and teachers received monthly feedback on classroom observations through personalized coaching. The guiding framework for this study was sociocultural theory because the PD design mirrored student-centered learning where the teacher is seen as a guide alongside the student. In this theory, meaning making is a social experience where perspectives of both the teacher and the student contribute to creating new knowledge. Quantitative data collected included a pre-/post-study survey and classroom observations scored on a rubric, and qualitative data consisted of exit interviews. All data was collected and analyzed concurrently, and a researcher’s journal assisted in real-time by providing a space for reflection that was used to determine PD needs, coaching conversations, and interview questions. Quantitative data revealed that the teachers perceived the intervention as slightly boosting their capacity to implement student-centered learning; however, the classroom observations indicated that teachers did not reach levels of proficiency. Through thematic analysis of the qualitative data, six themes emerged, which support the idea that PD can be a transformative experience when it is centered around praxis: 1) collaboration with colleagues, 2) PD gives teachers new ideas, 3) classroom feedback is valuable, 4) teacher reflection, 5) thought partnership, and 6) student choice. The discussion includes limitations and implications for future practice.
