With the recent rise in opioid overdose and death1

, chronic opioid therapy (COT) programs using
Center of Disease Control (CDC) guidelines have been implemented across the United States8
.
Primary care clinicians at Mayo Clinic initiated a COT program in September of 2017, during the
use of Cerner Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Study metrics included provider
satisfaction and perceptions regarding opioid prescription. Mayo Clinic transitioned its EHR
system from Cerner to Epic in October 2018. This study aims to understand if provider perceptions
about COT changed after the EHR transition and the reasons underlying those perceptions.
The various health benefits of vinegar ingestion have been studied extensively in the
literature. Moreover, emerging research suggests vinegar may also have an effect on mental
health. Beneficial effects of certain diets on mood have been reported, however, the mechanisms
are unknown. The current study aimed to determine if vinegar ingestion positively affects mood
state in healthy young adults. This was a randomized, single blinded controlled trial consisting of
25 subjects. Participants were randomly assigned to either the vinegar group (consumed 2
tablespoons of liquid vinegar diluted in one cup water twice daily with meals) or the control
group (consumed one vinegar pill daily with a meal), and the intervention lasted 4 weeks.
Subjects completed mood questionnaires pre- and post-intervention. Results showed a significant
improvement in CES-D and POMS-Depression scores for the vinegar group compared to the
control. This study suggests that vinegar ingestion may improve depressive symptoms in healthy
young adults.
Stress for college students is nothing new and as more kids go to college the number of cases are on the rise. This issue is apparent at colleges across the nation including Arizona State University. StreetWise aims to help students prevent or appropriately deal with stress through interactive lessons teaching students life skills, social skills, and emotional intelligence.
In order to prove the value of our service, StreetWise conducted a survey that asked students about their habits, thoughts on stress, and their future. Students from Arizona State University were surveyed with questions on respondent background, employment, number one stressor, preferred learning method, and topics that students were interested in learning. We found that students’ number one stressor was school but was interested in learning skills that would prepare them for their future after graduation. We used the results to make final decisions so that StreetWise could offer lessons that students would get the most value out of. This led to us conducting a second survey which included mock ups of the website, examples of interactive lesson plans, and an overview of the app. Students from the first survey were surveyed in addition to new respondents. This survey was intended for us to ensure that our service would maintain its value to students with the aesthetic and interface that we envisioned.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States. In this project, I chose to explore how food is one of the most accessible and inexpensive ways of treating anxiety. This creative project examines the major key components of gut health including the balance of neurotransmitters and bacteria in the gut, restoring hydrochloric acid through celery juice, removing heavy metal toxins through food, eating fermented foods, and limiting refined carbohydrates, and high-sugar consumption. Additionally, this creative project explores my own personal journey through the implementation of foods that influence anxiety revealed in a systemic review over the course of a 6-week period.
The Founders lab is a year-long program that gives its students an opportunity to participate in a unique team-based, experiential Barrett honors thesis project to design and apply marketing and sales strategies, as well as business and financial models to start up and launch a new business. This honors thesis project focuses on increasing the rate of vaccination outcomes in a country where people are increasingly busy (less time) and unwilling to get a needle through a new business venture that provides a service that brings vaccinations straight to businesses, making them available for their employees. Through our work with the Founders Lab, our team was able to create this pitch deck.
