In the U.S, Middle Eastern (M.E) students often struggle with negative biases toward them and experience isolation, discrimination, and report a lack of meaningful interactions with U.S. students. Against this backdrop, this dissertation explored the impact of enacted similarity and nonverbal immediacy on social attraction and friendship-potential between same-sex U.S.

In the U.S, Middle Eastern (M.E) students often struggle with negative biases toward them and experience isolation, discrimination, and report a lack of meaningful interactions with U.S. students. Against this backdrop, this dissertation explored the impact of enacted similarity and nonverbal immediacy on social attraction and friendship-potential between same-sex U.S. and M.E. international students during first time interactions on Zoom. A 2 (M.E. vs. U.S. confederate) x 2 (low vs. high similarity) x 2 (low vs. high nonverbal immediacy) x 2 (pre- vs. post-interaction) experimental design was employed, with participants reporting on their perceptions after viewing a profile of a confederate and then again after they interacted with the confederate on Zoom for three minutes. Pre-interaction results indicated that M.E. women were perceived as the most socially attractive, highest friendship potential, and as most likely to engage in pleasant interaction, compared to the other three groups. This finding emerged even though U.S. women rated fellow U.S. women as more similar to them than they rated M.E. women. A potential explanation is intersectionality of gender and ethnicity, with U.S. women stereotyping M.E. women as quiet, submissive, and oppressed, and therefore have sympathy for them and expect them to be kind. Post-interaction results revealed that in interactions between U.S. students, similarity impacted friendship potential but not social attraction, while nonverbal immediacy had a significant impact on both. In intercultural interactions between the U.S. and M.E. students, both nonverbal immediacy and similarity impacted social attraction and friendship potential. There were especially sharp drops in social attraction and friendship potential when the confederates enacted low levels of nonverbal immediacy. Overall, nonverbal immediacy had stronger and more consistent effects compared to similarity. Results indicate that to make positive impressions, both U.S. and M.E. students should use nonverbal immediacy cues such as smiling, leaning in, and being attentive to their interactional partner rather than looking away. Future directions include determining if findings can be generalized to face-to-face interactions and to perceptions of individuals from various cultures.

The family Cactaceae is extremely diverse and has a near global distribution yet very little has been described regarding the community of viruses that infect or are associated with cacti. This research characterizes the diversity of viruses associated with Cactaceae plants and their evolutionary aspects. Five viruses belonging to the economically relevant plant virus family Geminiviridae were identified, initially, two novel divergent geminiviruses named Opuntia virus 1 (OpV1) and Opuntia virus 2 (OpV2) and Opuntia becurtovirus, a new strain within the genus Becurtovirus. These three viruses were also found in co-infection. In addition, two known geminiviruses, the squash leaf curl virus (SLCV) and watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WCSV) were identified infecting Cactaceae plants and other non-cactus plants in the USA and Mexico. Both SLCV and WCSV are known to cause severe disease in cultivated Cucurbitaceae plants in the USA and Middle East, respectively. This study shows that WCSV was introduced in the America two times, and it is the first identification of this virus in the USA, demonstrating is likely more widespread in North America. These findings along with the Opuntia becurtovirus are probable events of spill-over in agro-ecological interfaces. A novel circular DNA possibly bipartite plant-infecting virus that encodes protein similar to those of geminiviruses was also identified in an Opuntia discolor plant in Brazil, named utkilio virus, but it is evolutionary distinct likely belonging to a new taxon. Viruses belonging to the ssDNA viral family Genomoviridae are also described and those thus far been associated with fungi hosts, so it is likely the ones identified in plants are associated with their phytobiome. Overall, the results of this project provide a molecular and biological characterization of novel geminiviruses and genomoviruses associated with cacti as well as demonstrate the impact of agro-ecological interfaces in the spread of viruses from or to native plants. It also highlights the importance of viral metagenomics studies in exploring virus diversity and evolution given then amount of virus diversity identified. This is important for conservation and management of cacti in a global scale, including the relevance of controlled movement of plants within countries.

Differences in the postcanine dentition of primates likely represent dietary adaptations given that the teeth interact directly with foods during mastication. Among early hominins, changes to both molar and premolar morphology are purported to indicate consumption of foods differing in their material properties. Some early hominins, such as the robust australopiths, possess premolars that resemble molars with enhancements to the distal part of the tooth (i.e., the talonid), including additional cusps and/or expanded basins. Such molarized premolars are thought to indicate that these hominins were processing mechanically challenging foods; that is, food items that were either hard or tough. Hypotheses tested in this study evaluated the link between the degree of premolar molarization and consumption of mechanically challenging foods in extant primates. Surface anatomy of the distal-most mandibular premolar (the P4) was quantified using a combination of 3D scans of postcanine dental casts and craniodental landmark data collected from 541 individuals, representing 22 extant primate taxa with well-studied diets and known food material properties. Taxa with more mechanically challenging diets were expected to have premolars with expanded talonids and enlarged P4s (and/or molar rows) relative to several mechanically-relevant size proxies. Taxa consuming high proportions of structural carbohydrates were also expected to have postcanine teeth with high occlusal relief (RFI), sharpness (DNE), and complexity (OPCR). Taxa consuming harder food items were expected to have lower relief and higher complexity, with sharpness determined by the proportion of structural carbohydrates included in their diet. The work presented in this dissertation supports most of these expectations, though talonid expansion per se was not clearly linked to the consumption of any particular diet. Overall, taxa with more mechanically challenging diets generally had relatively enlarged premolars when compared to taxa with softer diets and also differed predictably in their occlusal topography. The results of this dissertation support the functional significance of P4 crown size and measures of dental topography as they relate to diet and have implications for improving dietary inferences from the fossil record.

Serious or educational games have been a subject of research for a long time. They usually have game mechanics, game content, and content assessment all tied together to make a specialized game intended to impart learning of the associated content to its players. While this approach is good for developing games for teaching highly specific topics, it consumes a lot of time and money. Being able to re-use the same mechanics and assessment for creating games that teach different contents would lead to a lot of savings in terms of time and money. The Content Agnostic Game Engineering (CAGE) Architecture mitigates the problem by disengaging the content from game mechanics. Moreover, the content assessment in games is often quite explicit in the way that it disturbs the flow of the players and thus hampers the learning process, as it is not integrated into the game flow. Stealth assessment helps to alleviate this problem by keeping the player engagement intact while assessing them at the same time. Integrating stealth assessment into the CAGE framework in a content-agnostic way will increase its usability and further decrease in game and assessment development time and cost. This research presents an evaluation of the learning outcomes in content-agnostic game-based assessment developed using the CAGE framework.

This

Personal training is a growing industry as individuals across the U.S. face increasing levels of physical and psychological health issues. Hiring a certified personal trainer (CPT) presents an opportunity to not only become healthier, but also to grow one’s knowledge and abilities; researchers refer to this process as self-expansion. This research sought to specify a path model of the self-expansion process clients experience while training with their CPT. Secondly, this research described clients’ self-reported disclosure patterns with their CPT. Using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and ResearchMatch, the study sampled N = 392 U.S. residents who reported training with a CPT. Results from the path analysis indicated poor global fit; however, local fit supported several statistically significant paths. Clients’ level of internal motivation was positively associated with their self-disclosure, self-expansion, and self-pruning. Clients’ self-disclosure was positively associated with perceived closeness with their CPT. Contrary to prediction, clients’ perceived closeness was negatively associated with perceived support from their CPT. However, clients’ perceived closeness and perceived levels of support were both positively associated with their reported levels of self-expansion. Regarding clients’ disclosures, results indicated that clients primarily discuss physical training, diet and nutrition, and health concerns. Thematic analysis of self-reported disclosure examples revealed discussion topics including body dysmorphia, loss and grief, mental health, personal relationships, physical health, professionalism, support seeking, trainer sharing, and trust. Theoretical implications for the self-expansion model include support for additional variables in the self-expansion process, including motivation, self-disclosure, perceived support, and self-pruning. Additionally, practical recommendations for CPTs include an awareness of the type of relationship that clients may desire, as closeness may inhibit perceptions of support with training. Further, CPTs should be aware of the disclosures they may encounter, as clients may share intimate information and seek social support. As such, training programs should include sections on active listening and empathy and require CPTs to be knowledgeable of community resources in the event of a disclosure that presents a serious health risk to the client. Additional research is necessary, particularly to investigate closeness in the self-expansion process, as it did not function as expected within service and professional relationships.

Academic advisors play a critical role in student success within United States institutions of higher education. Although uniquely positioned to contribute to important institutional and student outcomes, academic advising is identified in the literature as an emerging profession, often delegitimizing advisor authority and limiting their contribution to institutional objectives. A review of the literature explores the history academic advising, and the current state of professionalization of the field. Additionally, entrepreneurial mindset is introduced as a framework of practice for professional agency. As a field working to professionalize itself within the higher education context, academic advisors must be able to fully participate and contribute to the process of developing innovative practices within the contexts of their institutions. This mixed-methods study drew upon proactive work behavior as defined by Hackman and Oldham to understand how academic advisors demonstrate and perceive their professional agency and ability to make decisions when working with students in the context of their role. Findings suggest professional agency as a construct exists not as a stand-alone concept, but rather as part of an ecosystem within the institution that includes layered systems, structures, and cultures which influence advisor behaviors and how they navigate decision-making. Implications include considerations for academic advising leaders and administrators, specifically related to departmental structures and advisor perceptions of their professional agency. This study contributes to the advising literature in the area of professionalization, with implications for scholarship and practice that can address gaps in the current scholarship.

Nohokáá Dine’é Diyinii’s (Empowered Earth Surface People, Diné People) story begins with the origin of the cosmos as detailed in Diné emergence narratives, and continues in Diné ceremonial songs, film, and poetry. Diné people’s emergence narratives describe how life moved through the four worlds and how Changing Woman brought Diné people into existence. In the present, Diné people often tell stories against violent colonial domination that aims to unsettle the hope and safety that undergirds their life and prosperity. Through their stories, Diné people bring their past and present together to make futures where Diné life can flourish. Each dissertation chapter explores the contours of storytelling as imagination, power, and future-making through selected Diné stories. Chapter 1 draws from the story of Gus Bighorse as set forth in his as-told-to autobiography (1990). The chapter describes how this Diné warrior, who survived the 1860s forced removal of Diné people, spoke from the heart to tell of a future beyond the US Cavalry’s violence. Such future-focused storying illustrates how Diné people apply elements of Sa’ah’ Naghai Bike’ Hózhǫ (SNBH) in the present to encourage the people to live. SNBH is a philosophy, worldview, and organizing principle for the underlying power through and by which Diné people imagine, create, remake, and renew our reality to realize hózhǫ, beauty. Chapter 2 examines the critical discourse within and around the 2014 Navajo election language fluency controversy that led to Christopher L. Clark Deschene’s removal from the general election ballot. Chapter 3 analyzes the hooghan and the Treaty of 1868 to show how construction in the United States always has sustained and marked the permanence of settler colonialism as white colonizers usurped Diné people’s lands and destroyed their homes. Chapter 4 employs the concept of feminist rehearsal to map the production of life and death in the border town of Gallup. This chapter interweaves the author’s family’s border town experience, the Nááhwíiłbįįhí Story, and Sydney Freeland’s feature film Drunktown’s Finest (2014). Chapter 5, an examination of Diné narratives of catastrophe and emergence, establishes a Diné-based approach to the threat of removal that climate change imposes.

Exposure to social and ecological adversity during sensitive windows of development often leadto disadvantageous outcomes in adulthood such as reduced social connectedness and shorter lifespan. Consequences of early life adversity can persist across generations. The mother is a crucial component of the early life environment for mammals and plays an important role in shaping offspring development. The mechanisms underlying the associations between early life adversity, adult outcomes, and transgenerational effects are not well established, and the complexities of how early life environments shape the ways offspring prioritize different dimensions of development are only beginning to be understood. This dissertation leverages longitudinal data, detailed behavioral observations, fecal hormone sampling, and noninvasive estimates of infant body size to assess how early life experiences shape development and adult outcomes in a wild population of olive baboons (Papio anubis) in Laikipia, Kenya. Four dissertation papers address: 1) the relationship between a mother’s early life adversity and her maternal effort, physiology, and offspring survival; 2) how the maternal environment shapes the ways developing offspring allocate resources among play, behavioral independence, and growth; 3) the role of interaction style in mediating the relationship between early life adversity and adult female sociability; and 4) the relative importance of female competition over food, mates, and male caretakers. Results of these papers show early life adversity can have lasting consequences on maternal effort and physiology, which in turn shape offspring developmental trajectories. Females who experienced early life adversity were less likely to develop an interaction style that was associated with sociability. Finally, the energetic costs of lactation were the primary driver of female competition, and in light of findings in chacma and yellow baboons, this indicates evolution has finely tuned female baboons’ responses to the social and ecological pressures of their local environments. To better understand the complexities of early life experiences and developmental trajectories, it is important to leverage longitudinal data and create comprehensive models of the maternal environment and infant development.

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of leadership communication incultivating compassion at work. To do so, this study utilizes positive deviance case selection and qualitative, semi-structured interviews to explore employees’ experiences with highly compassionate leaders. These interviews allow insight into employees’ perspectives on expressing suffering at work and experiences of compassionate communication from leaders. The findings of this study extend current understandings of compassion at work by highlighting the role of uncertainty to express suffering in limiting compassion, uncovering leadership communication behaviors that cultivate compassion, and illustrating dynamics that leaders navigate when reacting compassionately. Specifically, this study extends compassion theory by (1) demonstrating that uncertainty related to emotional disclosure limits employees’ sharing of personal suffering, which shapes and limits compassion processes, (2) illustrating that individuals holding traditionally marginalized or minoritized identities face additional uncertainty related to expressing pain and suffering, (3) highlighting a relational orientation that emphasizes personal well-being as enabling the compassion processes, (4) outlining anticipatory compassion as a specific discursive move that conveys care and opens space to express specific pains and suffering, and (5) empirically illustrating three dialectical tensions that punctuate the dynamic interactions between leaders and employees when relating and (re)acting compassionately.

There are as many different approaches to artistic collaboration theory as there are authors who have created them. This paper postulates that collaboration is a stage of the artistic co-creative group-work process. Theories of collaboration were examined to isolate verbiage used in various attempted definitions of artistic collaboration. Two theories were selected to serve as a joint model for the creation and maintenance of a collaboration stage during the artistic co-creative group-work process including a derived series of conditions required for a co-creative initial stage to qualify as collaboration. Those conditions were then applied to five collaborative situations to determine if each situation had established a collaboration stage, how that establishment occurred, if that collaborative atmosphere was maintained over the life of the co-creative process, how the presentational outcome of the group-work was affected by the presence or lack of a collaboration stage, and finally this collaborator’s general reactions to the process.
