Description
During a 2023 Barrett study abroad to Morocco I learned about Gnawa culture and recognized musical aesthetics within my collegiate studies regarding American jazz, blues, gospel/spiritual, fusion, and rock. In 2025 I secured funding for a research trip to attend one of the largest music festivals in the country. With the help of Kai Carbajal, we conducted interviews with tourists, locals, and musicians while recording various performances as we drove throughout the country. This project analyses the influence Gnawa culture has had throughout America's evolution of popular music.
