How do writers, scientists, Indigenous knowledge holders, farmers, and practitioners co-create ‘relational foodways’ in different places and times? How does the transformation of scientists’ positionality help navigate food security potential for future generations? This dissertation counter-maps Western and non-Western food knowledges and practices through analysis of diverse seed narratives in two indigenous communities: the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana and MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians of Alabama and farmers’ collectives in southern Italy. Based on three years of interdisciplinary and community-based participatory research, I observed affinities in communities’ stories regarding their Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Traditional Local Knowledge (TLK) and foodways. The research questions examine how community memories of relationships with land, ancestors, and beliefs encapsulated in heritage seeds contribute to forming an external innovation space for food security, which evolves through the repetition of seed reproduction cycles. I also examine how land relations in place-embedded narratives were erased from the future of seed by the systemic agricultural industry. Drawing on interdisciplinary theories, Indigenous research methods, and outside-of-academia frameworks, I argue that preserving TEK and TLK empowers community resilience as documented in their community stories regarding climate change and biodiversity. Interviews with community members revealed the important role of seed savers’ and basket weavers’ knowledge protection efforts in developing contemporary innovative models of food sovereignty, especially in the leadership of women passing down generations of local values and culturally enhanced principles of sustainability. This study attempted an interdisciplinary approach to integrate Indigenous epistemologies to envision a break from the colonial past. Mapping traditional foodways allows us to rethink the ontological basis, reconsider the epistemological approaches, and unfold the new narrative picturing the Middle Place where scientists and traditional knowledge holders can come to reimagine humanity’s future relationship to other forms of life, including plants and seeds.

Though controversial in its utility to the scientific study of nonhuman animals, anthropomorphism, or the attribution of human characteristics to a nonhuman being, is omnipresent in our interactions with other animals. Anthropomorphism is undeniably a fixture of modern zoos, but how anthropomorphism relates to zoos’ contributions to conservation is unclear.

Though controversial in its utility to the scientific study of nonhuman animals, anthropomorphism, or the attribution of human characteristics to a nonhuman being, is omnipresent in our interactions with other animals. Anthropomorphism is undeniably a fixture of modern zoos, but how anthropomorphism relates to zoos’ contributions to conservation is unclear. In this dissertation, I investigate these potentially dueling, potentially overlapping, messages within great ape exhibits in accredited zoos. Given the complexity of both anthropomorphism and conservation, this dissertation reveals some nuances of how both play out in zoological spaces. Human psychology literature on anthropomorphism indicates that there are a variety of uses for this lens that benefit humans; from feeling we can understand a confusing animal action, to feeling social connection. Whereas the comparative psychology literature highlights a contested utility of anthropomorphism in studies of nonhuman animals. The main findings from this study are four-fold. Firstly, surveys conducted with zoo visitors show that many bring anthropomorphic beliefs with them on their trek through the zoo. Visitors are prone to viewing great apes as strikingly like humans in terms of emotions, emotional expression, and understanding of the world. Secondly, surveyed zoo visitors who agreed more with anthropomorphic statements also agreed more with statements about feeling interconnected with nature. Thirdly, there is no uniform understanding within the zoo community about how zoo exhibits do or should contribute to conservation efforts given that exhibits have multiple goals, one being the safety and wellness of their animal residents. Fourthly, interviews of zoo staff show that they mediate a variety of messages for zoo visitors and walk a sometimes-divisive line between when it’s acceptable to use anthropomorphic framing to discuss zoo animals and when it’s inaccurate. By leveraging a better understanding of these attitudes and relationships, zoos can further empower their staff to navigate these complex issues and improve their mission-based goal of promoting conservation outcomes by acknowledging the human practices embedded in our perceptions of and interactions with zoo animals. This work speaks to the importance of carefully considering the ways we understand animals in zoos, in the wild, and all the places in-between.

This dissertation delivers a timely scholarly conversation on differently imagined grassroots feminist politics in a non-Western neoliberal authoritarian context. The project pivots on a central inquiry: how do Chinese rural migrant women, whose lifetimes are cast under the shadows of “Made in China” global production and punctuated by multiple concurrent neoliberal crises, collectively give birth to community power for radical livability? Drawing from extensive ethnographic fieldnotes, six oral history interviews, and archival studies, the dissertation employs community-based participatory action research to document and advance community organizing efforts by Green Rose (hence GR), a migrant women-led grassroots collective in Shenzhen. Set against the historical backdrop of China’s post-socialist reform when South China emerged as the world’s factory for manufacturing globalization, my study traces the trajectories in which a group of migrant women, upon gaining exposure to transnational labor NGO activism in the early 2000s, asserted collective power at the frontline for intersectional gender and class struggles. In the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, when economic downturns and welfare austerity measures entangled with the resurgence of state authoritarianism targeting civic actions, GR women temporarily transitioned to guerrilla activism to bring emancipatory cultural organizing and mutual aid into the social arena of a precarious migrant neighborhood. To survive welfare segregation and economic-political contingencies, GR women tactically established a social work service NGO to translate their depoliticized service labor into radical actions. They animate a sisterhood kinship system to liberate individual care capacity from the privatized household; they reorganize people, spaces, and resources to build a care safety net for all. By foregrounding migrant women as political protagonists in China’s precarious and fragmented civic landscape, my study problematizes both male-dominant labor politics embraced by orthodox Marxist scholars and the mainstream feminist movement sponsored by urban middle-class feminists, all the while exposing the state censorship that attempts and yet fails to erase the history of the marginalized gendered collective.

Words wield immense power. They help to shape realities, tell stories, and encompass deeper values and intentions on behalf of their users. Buzzwords are imprecise, trendy – and often-frustrating – words that are encountered in daily life. They frame problems, evoke emotional responses, and signal moral values. In this dissertation, I study buzzword use within the field of environmental conservation to better untangle the inherent tension they have long produced: do buzzwords help or hurt collective conservation efforts? Using a mixed methods approach, this dissertation provides descriptive and causal empirical evidence on many of the untested assumptions regarding the behavior, use, and impacts of buzzwords on conservation decision making. First, through a series of expert interviews with conservation professionals, I develop an empirically informed definition and understanding of buzzwords that builds upon the scholarly literature. It identifies eight defining characteristics, elaborates on the nuances of their use, life cycle, and context dependence, and sets forth a series of testable hypotheses on the relationship between buzzwords, trust, and perceptions. Second, I take this empirically informed understanding and employ a large-scale text analysis to interrogate the mainstream conservation discourse. I produce a list of buzzwords used across institutions (e.g., academia, NGOs) in the past five years and link them to predominant conservation frames, comparing the ways in which different institutions relate to and discuss conservation concepts. This analysis validates many long-held paradigms and ubiquitous buzzwords found in conservation such as sustainability and biodiversity, while identifying a more recently emerging framing of inclusive conservation. Third, I experimentally test a set of hypotheses on the effects that buzzwords have on decision making, as moderated through trust. This study finds evidence of a greenwashing effect, whereby buzzwords may produce marginal benefits to less trustworthy organizations through increases in credibility and group identity alignment, but do not outweigh the benefits of being trustworthy in the first place. In the face of many current global challenges requiring cooperation and collective action – such as climate change and environmental degradation – it is imperative to better understand the ways in which communication and framing (including buzzwords) influence decision making.

Social entrepreneurship has evolved into a global trend to promote responsible community development and social equity, including nonprofit, for-profit, or hybrid ventures that identify and exploit opportunities to promote social value and community benefit. Social entrepreneurship can be a powerful tool that shifts economic and sustainable development foci from a financial growth paradigm to a community development and community determination paradigm, promoting social justice and resource distribution equity. When considering intercession's potentiality and impact on local communities, an investigation of the role of ethics in the social entrepreneurial profession is essential. It is essential to question the assumption that social can equal ethical and investigate the possibility that the outcome of an enterprise overrides negative impacts on the stakeholders, leading to potential saviorism, colonization, and even corruption in social entrepreneurial efforts. The purpose of this study is to draw on theories of ethics to inform decision-making processes in professional social entrepreneurship. The single-case study seeks to define the ethical considerations of social entrepreneurs and what factors weigh into ventures designed to advance social equity and promote economic equilibrium for marginalized populations. Additionally, it investigates the ethical parameters by which social entrepreneurs operate and how their decision-making prioritizes community stakeholders. The research builds on the work of established critical theorists, existing professional nonprofit and entrepreneurial codes of ethics, and incorporates culturally ethical research models to propose a conceptual framework for social entrepreneurship ethics. The proposed conceptual framework aims to guide social entrepreneurs in navigating the complex interplay of ethical dilemmas, power dynamics, and cultural contexts they encounter. By synthesizing traditional ethical models, critical theory considerations, and a culturally responsive, reflexive, and relationship-based model, this framework seeks to provide a robust, adaptable approach to ethical decision-making grounded in social justice, equity, and respect for diverse cultural norms. These results have implications for entrepreneurship education and social entrepreneurship education, as well as for establishing a culturally responsive, relational, and reflexive professional code of ethics for social entrepreneurs.

The smart campus presents a new dimension of smart city urbanism as an identified gap in literature.

Smart cities surveil through ubiquitous and intrusive data collection via networked sensors. Smart city efforts are also frequently imagined as primarily top-down and male visions of the future in service of economic benefit. The smart campus presents a new dimension of smart city urbanism as an identified gap in literature. In the following dissertation, I trace sociotechnical imaginaries of a large R1 research university as a smart campus, using an Internet of Things (IoT) pole deployment as a case study. My primary research questions consider the localized co-production and imagining of the smart campus and its implications, explored through four research approaches: (1) interviews with designers, (2) archival review (3) qualitative analysis of visual case study artifacts, and (4) student interviews supported with observational study. Key findings include parallels to existing research on smart city imaginaries based in technosolutionistic, male-dominated, science fiction visions of the future. There is a reproduction of Big Data narratives of efficiency, and top-down implementation of visions extended to the smart campus. I also identify tensions in narratives of purpose, between privacy and surveillance, and digital citizenship dynamics. I employ an intersectional feminist technoscience lens rooted in Science and Technology Studies (STS), as well as notions of data justice and data power, from Critical Data Studies (CDS), and narrative inquiry methods to examine the stabilization and legitimization of these smart campus narratives. I also incorporate analysis of gender, power, and racialized surveillance relevant to carceral imaginaries in the smart campus. With support from narrative inquiry methods, I explore rhetoric underpinning the smart campus imaginary, specifically around promises of democracy, egalitarianism, and techno-utopias, tracing influences in national geopolitics, science fiction, and Silicon Valley ideology. This work contributes to existing knowledge on sociotechnical imaginaries of the smart city, documenting a genealogy as it is embedded into the urban space of the smart campus, and presenting an empirically grounded study of smart cities. This work also contributes to understandings of data as power, data assemblages, and data narratives, and to feminist technoscience literature on smart cities and the smart campus in the fields of CDS and STS.

This dissertation explores Brain Drain and Brain Circulation phenomena at Taos Pueblo, an Indigenous community located in northern New Mexico, USA. The study examines the push and pull factors that influence the migration of educated Taos Pueblo tribal members. The information contained in this dissertation was derived from a study that was completed from 2016-2017 in Taos Pueblo. It has become evident that Indigenous communities worldwide are currently experiencing massive migration away from reservations, rural, and communities of origin and towards urbanized centers. The research conducted in this dissertation was focused on both patterns and trends and possible distinct reasons for intellectual migration, especially in Indigenous communities. This dissertation is separated into three sections. The first part is a journal article that focused on Taos Pueblo intellectual migration patterns. The article draws from studies literature review, fieldwork methodology, methods, data and findings. The second part is a book chapter that centers on a literature review and theory development. The book chapter includes a discussion on the study findings and contains broad recommendations for addressing brain drain and promoting brain circulation in Taos Pueblo. The third and final section is a Policy Paper is aimed at two audiences, the first is Indigenous Leadership and secondly, college age students who are interested in working with Indigenous Communities. The policy brief provides solutions and recommendations that were gathered from secondary literature and from the data gathered during the various interviews that were conducted during the research period.

This study analyzes competing forms of Protestant Christianity within the Bible Belt of the Upper South (Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina). On one hand, a conservative “culture war” version of Christianity has dominated the South, and deeply influenced national politics, for almost fifty years. This form of Christianity is predicated on white supremacy and heteropatriarchy and regulates religious, as well as sexual, gender, and racial norms. On the other hand, an emerging movement of those once socialized in the culture war version of Protestantism is now reconfiguring the regional traditions. Through ethnographic fieldwork, qualitative interviews, and historical analysis, this study explores the ways these post-culture war Christians are navigating and negotiating relations with family, church, and politics and society more broadly. This work argues that Protestantism in the Upper South is being re-landscaped from the inside by individuals staying within the tradition who seek to reorient regional, national and religious identities. This study goes beyond generalizations about changes in American religion to shed light on the specific motivations, conflicts and dynamics inherent in shifts in lived religion in this particular region. In so doing it also contributes to deeper understanding of processes of religious change more generally.

This study examines the representation of Asian online brides by studying the images and profiles that are advertised on Asianonlinebrides.com. To do so, I combined the history and growth of the Human Trafficking industry, the idea of the Asian “exotic OTHER,” the power and structured/constrained agency, and social construction of gender theories. In particular, I utilized a mixed methods approach for data collection. The content and visual analysis in this study provided the two sides of the analytic coin: the written and the visual. I am particularly interested in the narrative comments offered by the prospective brides, e.g., what they state to be their preferences in their dream man/husband, and the personality traits, and characteristics that they write about themselves. The following were examined: the gender displays, picture frames, feminine touch, and the ritualization of subordination. For example, body language, clothing, skin, hair color, and texture, bone structure, posture, etc. I argue that this data alerts us to the whole host of ideas, assumptions, social, cultural, and gender constructions. The power relations that exceeds the text and inform us of these online brides. The findings have indicated that these women are vulnerable and caught within oppressive social structures. They have nevertheless utilized those structures to their advantage. By doing so, the brides have acted as assertive agents in that they have looked out for the interests of both themselves and their families. Moreover, a significant body of data was provided first hand through the written and visual narratives of the online brides. These brides have offered valuable insight into the field of Asian online brides. Their stories have presented a unique perspective to the online brides’ process that can only be captured through the narratives provided in this research.

Sexual harassment has emerged as a widespread problem facing women in public space in Egypt. Activism to combat sexual harassment began in 2005. However, just prior to and in the years following the January 25, 2011 Egyptian Revolution, which witnessed an increase in the collective sexual harassment, assault and rape of women, this activism has increased. Subsequently, scholarly attention to sexual harassment and public sexual violence has also expanded. Much of the attention in scholarly analyses has been directed toward politically motivated sexual violence, focused on understanding the state commissioning of sexual violence against female protestors to drive them from protest participation. There is an emerging critique of activist approaches that seems to ignore the politicalized nature of sexual harassment to focus instead on “cultural” targets. The early work of the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights (ECWR) and current work of HarassMap have been criticized for depoliticizing sexual harassment by failing to include an analysis of state-commissioned sexual violence in their work. Similarly, both have been accused of expanding the scope of the security state by calling for increased policing of public space to protect women from “culturally-bad” men.

With data collected through one year of participant observation with HarassMap, interviews with activists from eleven anti-sexual harassment initiatives and advocacy NGOs, and community-level surveys with non-activist individuals, this dissertation argues that “cultural” work undertaken through the community-based approaches by entities like ECWR and HarassMap is, in fact, an inherently political process, in which political engagement represents both an attempt to change political culture and state practice and a negotiative process involving changing patriarchal gender norms that underpin sexual harassment at a society-wide level. New conceptualizations of sexual harassment promoted by anti-sexual harassment initiatives and NGOs in Egypt frame it as a form of violence against women, and attempt to make sexual harassment an offense that may be criminalized. Yet, this dissertation contends there is a tension between activist and widespread public understandings of sexual harassment, predicated on the incomplete framing of sexual harassment as a form of violence.
