This past summer, I met a young lady named Ashley (name has been changed) who has been diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease. Upon researching this condition in greater detail, I learned that many medical providers who base their practice on the best evidence do not support treating patients for a chronic Lyme infection, the existence of which has not been substantially supported with research. I inquired about the process that led her to seek treatment for chronic Lyme disease at Jemsek Specialty Clinic. I learned that after many inaccurate diagnoses and years of unhelpful treatments, Ashley finally rejected the help offered by traditional medical doctors because she felt they were uncaring and inattentive, and went somewhere she felt heard. What she deserved, however, was both care that was based in scientific research and care that felt compassionate, as has been promoted by the nursing field. Despite the lack of a confirmed medical diagnosis, Ashley's day to day symptoms and struggles could be addressed with nursing care. I then constructed a nursing care plan to be implemented by Ashley's family and friends to help her feel her best and live a fulfilling life despite chronic disease. Patients should not have to choose between a healthcare provider who utilizes the strongest scientific evidence and one they feel understands them, though many do. The purpose of this study was to explore how the phenomenon of familismo effects behavioral change within the Mexican-American family if one member of the family participates in an obesity prevention curriculum. The qualitative approach findings indicate that the principle of familismo regarding perceived responsibility to provide emotional support to family members regarding changes in physical activity and dietary habits. Participants reported that their families are eating healthier, since, they started the obesity prevention curriculum. The findings regarding physical activity were inconclusive. This study can help nurses, because it emphasizes the importance of promoting family involvement as a motivator for behavioral change, in terms of physical activity and healthy diet eating, within Mexican-American populations.

The stigma associated with mental illness has been and continues to be a considerable issue of concern in the care of persons with mental illness. Stigma affects not only those with mental illness, but also their families, healthcare personnel, the social community, and policy formation. Common themes of stigma associated with mental illness are fear, social rejection, stereotyping, negative impact, and a lack of knowledge and awareness of mental illness. Despite a more accurate understanding of mental illness, stigma still exists. Interventions to help reverse the stigma associated with mental illness include education, awareness and an environment of inclusion. Toward this end, a PowerPoint presentation will be gifted to Arizona State University College of Nursing to be shown during the psychiatric mental health rotation outlining mental illness and stigma, and what nurses and future nurses can do to combat this stigma.

In the United States, more than 22 million people are estimated to be affected by the chronic illness, asthma (American Lung Association [ALA], 2014). Of those 22 million, approximately 7.1 million are children (ALA, 2014). An important factor in trying to curb the frequency of asthma attacks is education. Particular elements of asthma education include symptom recognition, self-management skills, correct administration, and understanding how medications are used to control asthma. A review of the literature shows that multimedia education holds some promise in increasing asthma-knowledge retention. This creative project involved the creation of an asthma-education video with a concomitant asthma-education comic book. Of the two creations, the asthma-education video was used in a former Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) student’s study to supplement a session at a clinic with an asthma educator. The tools included in the study, the Asthma Medication Use Questionnaire (Moya, 2014) and the Asthma Control TestTM (ACTTM; QualityMetric Incorporated, 2002), were completed by the participants prior to and after the implementation of the session that incorporated the video. The results suggested that the video had an effect on asthma control as measured by the ACTTM (QualityMetric Incorporated, 2002), but not on daily preventative asthma inhaler usage as measured by the Asthma Medication Use Questionnaire (Moya, 2014). The comic book has not been evaluated yet. Both multimedia education tools—the comic book and the video—were created as a requirement for the Barrett thesis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine recent nursing textbooks’ portrayal of gender, weight, and diagnosis in eating disorder exemplars, and compare the textbook presentation to prevalence rates as published within the textbooks themselves.

CONTEXT: Eating disorders are often portrayed as afflicting underweight women with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Demographics of people outside this stereotype face health disparities in illness recognition and treatment. Passive exposure to information on eating disorders can reduce stereotypical beliefs among nursing students, which has the potential to improve patient care.

METHOD: Case studies, practice questions, vignettes, and care plans from eight psychiatric nursing textbooks were analyzed for portrayal of the three research variables.

DATA and RESULTS: Men were not significantly underrepresented in the exemplars. Transgender clients, clients of normal or overweight status, and clients with diagnoses other than anorexia nervosa were significantly underrepresented from eating disorder exemplars.

CONCLUSION: Textbooks should be adjusted to include more exemplars from underrepresented demographics of clients with eating disorders.

During the First and Second World Wars, the totality of global war and the involvement of the United States necessitated the use of American women within military medical services as nurses. Military nursing served as a catalyst for professionalizing nursing as well as the entrance women into US military jobs.

During the First and Second World Wars, the totality of global war and the involvement of the United States necessitated the use of American women within military medical services as nurses. Military nursing served as a catalyst for professionalizing nursing as well as the entrance women into US military jobs. This thesis explores American women’s military nursing roles during WWI and WWII within the historical context of the precedence set for female nurses’ involvement in wartime medical service in both the American Civil War and the Spanish Civil War. In so doing, it seeks to answer specific research questions focused on nurse’s wartime experiences, the formality of their role, and public perceptions of female nurses. I will examine the change over time of these issues and reasons for their evolution.

The purpose of this study is to explore ways nurses provide an optimal healing environment in the hospital setting. One aim of this research is to identify gaps between nurses’ confidence in their ability to provide a healing environment and patient interpretation of the environment they received. Additionally, this paper looks for missing information in healing environment literature and pinpoints where hospital systems can be improved to help nurses and patients under their care. Data was collected through two online surveys created with Qualtrics Research Core™. One was taken by registered nurses who annotated how well they execute each domain of an Optimal Healing Environment (OHE) and what hinders their performance. The other survey was given to individuals who have been a patient in an Arizona hospital, and they commented on the environment they experienced. Total surveyed subjects include three nurses and four previously hospitalized patients. Data collected was not enough to make any conclusions so additional literature was reviewed and patterns between the literature and survey responses were analyzed. There is a consensus around what a healing environment should look like but there is no explanation as to who is responsible for creating one and what is the nurse’s role, if any. It was concluded that there needs to be more research on the practice of providing healing environments.

The purpose of the integrative review was to analyze published research on the experiences of individuals aged 15 to 24 years within two years of a type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) diagnosis, with the intention of understanding their potential challenges and ensuring best practice by healthcare professionals when caring for and supporting these individuals. With T1DM being a chronic disease with no known cure, this diagnosis greatly impacts one’s life, making understanding of the experiences of individuals with diabetes essential. Individuals aged 15 to 24 years were studied as this age group craves autonomy while potentially facing multiple life transitions simultaneously. They may make risky decisions that can threaten their health, and are at an increased risk for suicide. After completing a systematic literature search, two studies that met the set criteria were analyzed. One found that T1DM adds challenges to college living, while the other study discussed management of exercise with T1DM. Both studies emphasized the importance of education and how T1DM affects all parts of one’s life. While they provided a glimpse of the daily challenges individuals with T1DM face, there are still many gaps in T1DM diagnosis experience research. Health professionals need additional credible research in order to conduct evidence-based practice that improves the lives of these young individuals coping with a serious chronic disease. If further research is not conducted, individuals aged 15 to 24 years are at a severe disadvantage in navigating a new T1DM diagnosis and could easily become overwhelmed due to their developing brains and additional lifestyle changes that come with being an emerging adult.

This paper reviews a creative project designed to enhance the simulation experience for College of Nursing and Health Innovation nursing students at Arizona State University. Simulation allows students to practice imperative skills in a safe environment, free from the risk of injury to patients and the consequences of making these errors, in order to master skills that are essential in the clinical setting. Students are able to practice a wide range of invasive and noninvasive skills and hone in on their clinical judgement and critical thinking to make decisions that may be life threatening in a clinical situation. The group members designed written training materials and created corresponding video vignettes that would be utilized to enhance the confederate role and provide the students a deeper understanding of their simulated patient and the simulation scenario. The written training materials that were developed include confederate background information, patient and family education, and guided questions and answers for the video vignettes. The written training materials will be used to guide the students that are portraying the family member during the simulation. Trained standardized patients were hired to play the confederate role in the four video vignettes. The video vignettes portrayed interviews with a family member of the patient that delved into how they felt about their family member's hospitalization and what they hoped to learn from the nurses during their family member's hospitalization. The vignettes will be used to guide students to the needs of the patients and families in the corresponding scenarios. These vignettes will be accessible by students before the start of simulation in order to enhance understanding of the patient and ultimately, the scenario.
