Here, this research extends that exploratory work in an effort to determine if hfg of aqueous nanofluids can be manipulated, i.e., increased or decreased, by the addition of graphite or silver nanoparticles. Our results to date indicate that hfg can be substantially impacted, by up to ± 30% depending on the type of nanoparticle. Moreover, this dissertation reports further experiments with changing surface area based on volume fraction (0.005% to 2%) and various nanoparticle sizes to investigate the mechanisms for hfg modification in aqueous graphite and silver nanofluids. This research also investigates thermophysical properties, i.e., density and surface tension in aqueous nanofluids to support the experimental results of hfg based on the Clausius - Clapeyron equation. This theoretical investigation agrees well with the experimental results. Furthermore, this research investigates the hfg change of aqueous nanofluids with nanoscale studies in terms of melting of silver nanoparticles and hydrophobic interactions of graphite nanofluid. As a result, the entropy change due to those mechanisms could be a main cause of the changes of hfg in silver and graphite nanofluids.
Finally, applying the latent heat results of graphite and silver nanofluids to an actual solar thermal system to identify enhanced performance with a Rankine cycle is suggested to show that the tunable latent heat of vaporization in nanofluilds could be beneficial for real-world solar thermal applications with improved efficiency.
Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE), including full many-particle interactions, is
presented in this work. This technique has been developed to explicitly model
population-dependent scattering within the full-band Cellular Monte Carlo (CMC)
framework to simulate electro-thermal transport in semiconductors, while ensuring
the conservation of energy and momentum for each scattering event. The scattering
algorithm directly solves the many-body problem accounting for the instantaneous
distribution of the phonons. The general approach presented is capable of simulating
any non-equilibrium phase-space distribution of phonons using the full phonon dispersion
without the need of the approximations commonly used in previous Monte Carlo
simulations. In particular, anharmonic interactions require no assumptions regarding
the dominant modes responsible for anharmonic decay, while Normal and Umklapp
scattering are treated on the same footing.
This work discusses details of the algorithmic implementation of the three particle
scattering for the treatment of the anharmonic interactions between phonons, as well
as treating isotope and impurity scattering within the same framework. The approach
is then extended with a technique based on the multivariable Hawkes point process
that has been developed to model the emission and the absorption process of phonons
by electrons.
The simulation code was validated by comparison with both analytical, numerical,
and experimental results; in particular, simulation results show close agreement with
a wide range of experimental data such as the thermal conductivity as function of the
isotopic composition, the temperature and the thin-film thickness.
anohole based metamaterials which are known of the capability of large area fabrication were intensively studied. Most of the studies are only based on the electrical responses of the metamaterials; however, magnetic response, is usually neglected since magnetic material does not exist naturally within the visible or infrared range. For the past few years, artificial magnetic response from nanostructure based metamaterials has been proposed. This reveals the possibility of exciting resonance modes based on magnetic responses in nanowire
anohole metamaterials which can potentially provide additional enhancement on radiative transport. On the other hand, beyond classical far-field radiative heat transfer, near-field radiation which is known of exceeding the Planck’s blackbody limit has also become a hot topic in the field.
This PhD dissertation aims to obtain a deep fundamental understanding of nanowire
anohole based metamaterials in both far-field and near-field in terms of both electrical and magnetic responses. The underlying mechanisms that can be excited by nanowire
anohole metamaterials such as electrical surface plasmon polariton, magnetic hyperbolic mode, magnetic polariton, etc., will be theoretically studied in both far-field and near-field. Furthermore, other than conventional effective medium theory which only considers the electrical response of metamaterials, the artificial magnetic response of metamaterials will also be studied through parameter retrieval of far-field optical and radiative properties for studying near-field radiative transport. Moreover, a custom-made AFM tip based metrology will be employed to experimentally study near-field radiative transfer between a plate and a sphere separated by nanometer vacuum gaps in vacuum. This transformative research will break new ground in nanoscale radiative heat transfer for various applications in energy systems, thermal management, and thermal imaging and sensing.
First, a literature review of bricklaying construction activity and existing robots’ performance is discussed. After describing an overview of the required robot structure, a mathematical model is presented for the 5-DOF robotic arm. A model-based computed torque controller is designed for the nonlinear dynamic robotic arm, taking into consideration the dynamic and kinematic properties of the arm. For sustainable growth of this technology so that it is affordable to the masses, it is important that the energy consumption by the robot is optimized. In this thesis, the trajectory of the robotic arm is optimized using sequential quadratic programming. The results of the energy optimization procedure are also analyzed for different possible trajectories.
A construction testbed setup is simulated in the ROS platform to validate the designed controllers and optimized robot trajectories on different experimental scenarios. A commercially available 5-DOF robotic arm is modeled in the ROS simulators Gazebo and Rviz. The path and motion planning is performed using the Moveit-ROS interface and also implemented on a physical small-scale robotic arm. A Matlab-ROS framework for execution of different controllers on the physical robot is described. Finally, the results of the controller simulation and experiments are discussed in detail.
