Ethernet based technologies are emerging as the ubiquitous de facto form of communication due to their interoperability, capacity, cost, and reliability. Traditional Ethernet is designed with the goal of delivering best effort services. However, several real time and control applications require more precise deterministic requirements and Ultra Low Latency (ULL), that Ethernet cannot be used for. Current Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS) applications use semi-proprietary technologies that provide deterministic communication behavior for sporadic and periodic traffic, but can lead to closed systems that do not interoperate effectively. The convergence between the informational and operational technologies in modern industrial control networks cannot be achieved using traditional Ethernet. Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a suite of IEEE standards designed by augmenting traditional Ethernet with real time deterministic properties ideal for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications. Similarly, Deterministic Networking (DetNet) is a Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standardization that enhances the network layer with the required deterministic properties needed for IACS applications. This dissertation provides an in-depth survey and literature review on both standards/research and 5G related material on ULL. Recognizing the limitations of several features of the standards, this dissertation provides an empirical evaluation of these approaches and presents novel enhancements to the shapers and schedulers involved in TSN. More specifically, this dissertation investigates Time Aware Shaper (TAS), Asynchronous Traffic Shaper (ATS), and Cyclic Queuing and Forwarding (CQF) schedulers. Moreover, the IEEE 802.1Qcc, centralized management and control, and the IEEE 802.1Qbv can be used to manage and control scheduled traffic streams with periodic properties along with best-effort traffic on the same network infrastructure. Both the centralized network/distributed user model (hybrid model) and the fully-distributed (decentralized) IEEE 802.1Qcc model are examined on a typical industrial control network with the goal of maximizing scheduled traffic streams. Finally, since industrial applications and cyber-physical systems require timely delivery, any channel or node faults can cause severe disruption to the operational continuity of the application. Therefore, the IEEE 802.1CB, Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER), is examined and tested using machine learning models to predict faulty scenarios and issue remedies seamlessly.

Researchers have observed that the frequencies of leading digits in many man-made and naturally occurring datasets follow a logarithmic curve, with digits that start with the number 1 accounting for 30% of all numbers in the dataset and digits that start with the number 9 accounting for 5% of all numbers in the dataset. This phenomenon, known as Benford's Law, is highly repeatable and appears in lists of numbers from electricity bills, stock prices, tax returns, house prices, death rates, lengths of rivers, and naturally occurring images. This paper will demonstrate that human speech spectra also follow Benford's Law. This observation is used to motivate a new set of features that can be efficiently extracted from speech and demonstrate that these features can be used to classify between human speech and synthetic speech.

The first chapter uses data on birthplaces of 2,065 Chief Executive Officers (CEO) and a county-level measure of cultural individualism based on the westward expansion in American history to establish a positive relation between CEO cultural individ- ualism and corporate innovation. Difference-in-differences estimations around CEO turnovers support the causality. Individualistic CEOs increase innovation by creating an innovative corporate culture, providing more flexibility to employees, and tolerance for failure.The second chapter develops a model to study the corporate board structure and communication. Outside directors are related to potential competitors. As a result, they can bring valuable advice and cause information leakage. The firm needs to decide whether to have outside directors on the board. In the presence of the outside director, the other directors need to determine whether to communicate.

Efforts to improve student learning in K-12 education in the US are not new; however, educational research has traditionally focused on individual components of schools (e.g., teacher professional development, leadership, social relationships, programs, curricula) targeting teachers to improve student learning. While these innovations provide hope for change, they are limited in their focus and application to other school settings in that school contexts are unique to the individuals making them up and the collaborative missions and goals they pursue. To foster capacity for teachers to implement instructional reforms (i.e., how teachers teach), research must be focused on a holistic interpretation of the school as an organization. This study developed and validated a survey to examine elementary teachers’ science and mathematics instructional practice use as well as their perceptions of instructional reform capacity within their school environment from an ecological organization perspective. Over 300 elementary teachers from a large urban district participated in the survey over the course of four weeks. Findings indicated elementary teachers utilized teacher-centered instructional practices more frequently than reform-oriented (i.e., student-centered) instructional practices. However, teachers reported more frequent use of instructional practices in their mathematics lessons compared to science lessons. Furthermore, data was used to investigate the underlying dimensions of instructional reform capacity and examine the relationship between those dimensions and instructional practice use both within and between subjects (i.e., science and mathematics). Results revealed dimensions underlying instructional reform capacity as well as correlations with instructional practice use are not the same for elementary science and mathematics. Dimensions of professional learning, structure, and policy were more strongly correlated with reform-oriented (i.e., student-centered) instructional practices. Implications from these findings suggest the necessity of a more holistic perspective of instructional reform capacity to better support instructional reforms across subject areas in schools, on both the local level and within research.

ABSTRACT The legalization of marijuana is increasing in the United States. With more dispensaries opening, it is essential to look at these businesses' impacts on neighborhood crime rates. Alcohol outlets are known as crime attractors/crime generators, and their presence in a neighborhood is also significant to look at when investigating violent crime rates. It is crucial then to take both marijuana and alcohol outlets together to determine the effects these facilities have on aggravated assault and robbery in a neighborhood. To assess the impact of marijuana outlets, on-premises alcohol outlets, and off-premises alcohol outlets in Los Angeles, California, on aggravated assaults and robberies, this thesis uses Los Angeles business, crime, and census data. The study addresses the following research questions: (1) Does an additional marijuana outlet in a neighborhood increase aggravated assaults and robberies? (2) Does the presence of on- and off-premises alcohol outlets increase aggravated assault and robbery? (3) Does the presence of multiple types of risky businesses increase violent crime? The current study finds an increase in aggravated assaults and robberies when marijuana outlets and on- and off-premises outlets are located in a neighborhood. The only non-significant finding is when all three outlet types were present; marijuana outlets are the only outlet type not associated with an increase in robbery. These findings suggest that limits should be placed on the number of risky retailers in a neighborhood and provides policy implications directed toward reducing violent crime near marijuana and alcohol outlets. He composed this concerto in December of

ABSTRACT This project includes a research paper, a professional recording, and a musical score. Mauricio Annuziata, a well-known Argentine composer, dedicated his Concerto No. 5 to me, Nathaniel De La Cruz, and it is inspired by Andean Folklore music from South America. He composed this concerto in December of 2020, and it has original themes closely related to Andean music. The author recorded this concerto in a professional audio and video recording made in Katzin concert hall in the ASU music building on September 30, 2021, with my wife Rosa LoGiudice De La Cruz on the piano. This concerto was conceptualized as one large movement divided into three smaller movements. An unusual combination of melodies conveys the nature of traditional musical practices characteristic of South America. This is the first concerto for double bass inspired by Andean folk music. In researching for this document, I studied manuscripts of Andean folk music compiled by ethnomusicologists to explore the connection between the pentatonic scale and traditional musical practices. These connections are discussed in detail in a chapter of the form of the concerto, including representations of traditional folkloric dances from different countries of South America. In this document I also discuss the process of working with the composer, rehearsing, and incorporating the necessary revisions to make the music effective and idiomatic for the double bass. This new work will offer the double bass world a new perspective for solo repertoire, as it is accessible for intermediate (check this) and professional levels. The process of collaborating with a composer of such caliber as Mauricio Annunziata is a rewarding experience for me not only as a student, but as a performer where I found different challenges to explore new music practices and techniques.

An intersectional analysis of sex education in the U.S. reveals a need for a more nuanced and community-based approach to sexuality education. A Reproductive Justice framed sexuality education program attends to the needs and desires expressed by a community, while interrogating and resisting the interlocking systems of power that work to uphold white patriarchy and white supremacy. Reproductive Justice sexuality education is socially transformational when it centers student creation and community participation. Instead of risk prevention and rights-based sex education programs that often perpetuate oppressive structures and erase students' lived experiences, student-centered sexuality education with a Reproductive Justice framework allows for participants to feel safe and valued. This re/imagining of sex education also allows for pleasure instead of shame to be a product of sexuality exploration.
