Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Simulation games are widely used in engineering education, especially for industrial engineering and operations management. A well-made simulation game aids in achieving learning objectives for students and minimal additional teaching by an instructor. Many simulation games exist for engineering education, but newer technologies now exist that improve the overall experience of developing and using these games. Although current solutions teach concepts adequately, poorly-maintained platforms distract from the key learning objectives, detracting from the value of the activities. A backend framework was created to facilitate an educational, competitive, participatory simulation of a manufacturing system that is intended to be easy to maintain, deploy, and expand.

Mentorship is important to learning because it provides a frame of reference and the guidance necessary to succeed for those who are inexperienced. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a one-semester mentorship program for freshman Barrett nursing students. Specifically, it was hypothesized that freshman Barrett nursing students (mentees) would experience higher levels of confidence as they enter their second year. With improved confidence and better preparation in handling stress, freshman Barrett students are more likely to stay in the Barrett program throughout their time at a university in the southwestern United States. The mentorship program included freshman Barrett students pursuing a degree in nursing as the mentees and Term 8 (senior) Barrett Nursing students as the mentors. The mentorship program supported freshman students in reaching out to their mentors for study tips, class advice, homework help, and use them as a general resource throughout the application process. Quantitative data was collected in a pre- and post-survey in order to analyze the confidence scores of mentors and mentees. The survey asked participants questions regarding their level of self-confidence and asked them to rank their responses on a Likert scale with 1 being strongly disagree and 5 being strongly agree. The results showed that confidence levels based on the quantitative data either stayed the same or was improved in every participant. Specifically, there were multiple statistically significant findings based on the paired t-tests that were run. Findings suggest the mentorship program improved the confidence levels in both freshman Barrett students and their Senior mentors.

Executive compensation is broken into two parts: one fixed and one variable. The fixed component of executive compensation is the annual salary and the variable components are performance-based incentives. Clawback provisions of executive compensation are designed to require executives to return performance-based, variable compensation that was erroneously awarded in the year of a misstatement. This research shows the need for the use of a new clawback provision that combines aspects of the two currently in regulation. In our current federal regulation, there are two clawback provisions in play: Section 304 of Sarbanes-Oxley and section 954 of The Dodd\u2014Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. This paper argues for the use of an optimal clawback provision that combines aspects of both the current SOX provision and the Dodd-Frank provision, by integrating the principles of loss aversion and narcissism. These two factors are important to consider when designing a clawback provision, as it is generally accepted that average individuals are loss averse and executives are becoming increasingly narcissistic. Therefore, when attempting to mitigate the risk of a leader keeping erroneously awarded executive compensation, the decision making factors of narcissism and loss aversion must be taken into account. Additionally, this paper predicts how compensation structures will shift post-implementation. Through a survey analyzing the level of both loss- aversion and narcissism in respondents, the research question justifies the principle that people are loss averse and that a subset of the population show narcissistic tendencies. Both loss aversion and narcissism drove the results to suggest there are benefits to both clawback provisions and that a new provision that combines elements of both is most beneficial in mitigating the risk of executives receiving erroneously awarded compensation. I concluded the most optimal clawback provision is mandatory for all public companies (Dodd-Frank), targets all executives (Dodd-Frank), and requires the recuperation of the entire bonus, not just that which was in excess of what should have been received (SOX).

This thesis investigates an interpenetrating network of polyacrylamide and poly acrylic acid for use in a dynamic tactile display, which presents traditionally two-dimensional electronic screens as three-dimensional topographical models that can be experienced through touch. This kind of display would allow for greater access to traditionally visual information for the visually impaired. This hydrogel demonstrates Upper Critical Solution Temperature (UCST) near room temperature which facilitates a swelling transition, characterized by a sharp increase in swelling as this temperature is surpassed. Through the utilization of light responsive additives, light can trigger this shift, as the additives harness visible light, convert it into heat to raise the gel’s temperature, and increase the volume of the gel. Light-responsive additives explored include chlorophyllin, gold nanoparticles, and carbon black. Each of these additives required unique synthesis planning and strategies in order to optimize the performance of the gels. Synthesized gels were characterized using thermal swelling tests, light response tests and compression tests to determine the material strength. The best performing additive was chlorophyllin and allowed for a 20.8%±4.5% percent weight increase upon exposure to light for 10 minutes. In addition to investigating light-responsive additives, modifications were pursued to alter the overall UCST behavior, such as the addition of sodium chloride. By adding sodium chloride into the hydrogel, the gel was found to have a wider transition. Overall, light-responsive behavior was developed, and further work can be done in improving the response time and degree of swelling in order to make this material more viable for use in a dynamic tactile display.

In the development of personalized medicine and many other clinical studies, biospecimen integrity serves as the prerequisite for not only the accurate derivation of patient- and disease-specific molecular data from biological specimens but the meaningful downstream validation of biomarkers. However, a large number of preanalytical variables may influence the quality of biospecimens in an undesired way and ultimately render the samples unsuitable for molecular analysis. The limited ability to directly reduce discrepancies caused by preanalytical variables gives rise to the need for development and retrospective application of appropriate tests for assessment of biospecimen integrity. Nevertheless, the most standard approaches to assessing biospecimen integrity involve nontrivial procedures. Thus, the need for quality control tools or tests that are readily applicable and can produce results in a straightforward way becomes critical. As one of the major ex vivo biomolecular degradation mechanisms, oxidation that occurs when blood plasma and serum samples are exposed to thawed states during storage and processing is hard to forestall and detect. In an attempt to easily detect and monitor the degree of oxidation, the technique of Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) was examined to determine whether this concept could be employed to monitor exposure of samples to thawed conditions when controlled by spontaneous oxidative disulfide bonding. The intended mode of usage was envisioned as a fluorescence liquid being stored in a separate compartment but within the same test tube as archived plasma and serum samples. This would allow the assessment of sample integrity by direct visualization of fluorescence under a hand-held black light. The fluorescent dynamic range as well as kinetic control of the reaction were studied. While the addition of Cu(II) proved to facilitate excellent dynamic range with regard to fluorescence quenching, the kinetics of the reaction were too rapid for practical use. Further investigation revealed that the fluorescence quenching mechanism might have actually occurred via Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) rather than FRET mediated by oxidative disulfide bond formation. Introduction of Cu(II) via copper metal slowed fluorescence quenching to the point of practical utility; facilitating demonstration that storing at room temperature, refrigerating or freezing the samples delayed fluorescence quenching to different extents. To establish better kinetic control, future works will focus on establishing controlled, thoroughly understood kinetic release of Cu(II) from copper metal.

The business of residential real estate is booming; over 5 million homes were sold in the United States in 2017 alone, according to the National Association of REALTORS® (“Quick Real Estate Statistics,” 2018). With the recovery of the housing market after the 2008 crash, more home buyers and sellers seek out real estate agents to assist with their transactions. Despite the majority of home buyers and sellers still using agents to conduct transactions, obstacles for fostering positive relationships come in the form of poor agent ethical reputations (Pacelle, 1994), agent empathy (Snyder et al, 2011), and even agent attractiveness (S.P. Salter et al, 2012). These reasons make it all the more critical that agents stand out from competitors, raising the question of how agents can differentiate themselves from other agents. To answer this question, this thesis seeks to discover what clients and agents value the most in their relationship with each other. In this study, three real estate agents and a client or client-couple from each were interviewed about the agent’s personality, brand promise, and actions taken to convey the promise. The most important factors in developing relationships, as well as a theoretical framework for the different relationships that can be formed within the agent-client context, were derived from the interview data collected. Commercial friendship develops from the overlap of all three relationship factors identified in the study, and as previously found, correlates with client loyalty and relationship quality (Lou, Zhou & Zheng, 2011). By shaping service around such factors, agents may be able to form better relationships with their clients. An agent with a stronger relationship with their clients may be more likely to receive referrals, earn customer loyalty, and even capture the attention of a first-time home buyer without the use of referral.

With the rising prevalence of obesity and diabetes, novel treatments to help mitigate or prevent symptoms of these conditions are warranted. Prior studies have shown that fossilized plant materials found in soil lowers blood sugar in a mouse model of diabetes. The goal of this study is to determine whether a similar organometallic complex (OMC) could prevent insulin resistance in the skeletal muscle brought on by chronic high fat intake by examining the protein expression of key enzymes in the insulin signaling pathway and examining glucoregulatory measures. Six-week-old periadolescent male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=42) were randomly chosen to be fed either a high fat diet (HFD) (20% protein, 20% carbohydrates [6.8% sucrose], 60% fat) or a standard chow diet (18.9% protein, 57.33% carbohydrates, 5% fat) for 10 weeks. Rats from each diet group were then randomly assigned to one of three doses of OMC (0, 0.6, 3.0 mg/mL), which was added to their drinking water and fasting blood glucose was measured at baseline and again at 10 weeks. After 10 weeks, rats were euthanized, and soleus muscle samples were isolated, snap-frozen, and stored at -80°C until analyses. Fasting plasma glucose was measured using a commercially available glucose oxidase kit. Following 6 and 10 weeks, HFD rats developed significant hyperglycemia (p<0.001 and p=0.025) compared to chow controls which was prevented by high dose OMC (p=0.021). After 10 weeks, there were significant differences in fasting serum insulin between diets (p=0.009) where levels were higher in HFD rats. No significant difference was seen in p-PI3K expression between groups. These results suggest that OMC could prevent insulin resistance by reducing hyperglycemia. Further studies are needed to characterize the effects of diet and OMC on the insulin signaling pathway in skeletal muscle, the main site of postprandial glucose disposal. This thesis comparatively examines the percentage of women who have been appointed to federal level Cabinet positions in the United States and Canada between 1980 and 2010. The thesis will first explain the differences in the nation's democratic systems -- presidential and parliamentarian -- to contextualize how each nation elects federal representatives coupled with their process of appointing individuals to Cabinet positions per administration. Then the thesis will briefly explain the basis of the political parties that have been active in each country alongside their prominent ideals, in an effort to understand the impact it has had on the number of women elected to federal positions. Finally, the research will focus on the number of women appointed to Cabinet to demonstrate how an increase in the amount of political parties, creates more competition between political parties, in turn allowing for a higher number of women to be elected as well as appointed to federal positions. In conclusion, the research suggests that liberal party's push forth more women to federal level positions in both countries. Coupled with the fact that the increase in the amount of office holding parties increases competition between parties and increases the number of women appointed to Cabinet.

This thesis examines a convergence point between civil society and the military: the Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC). Specifically, it is centered on how sexual assault is managed within ROTC, a hybrid entity of both the university and the military, two institutional arenas where sexual assault has emerged recently as a social problem. The U.S. military and public universities have distinct laws and legal processes as well as institutional cultural influences that address sexual assault. Therefore, I will explore how the hybrid ROTC program governs sexual assault while being simultaneously beholden to similar and/or possibly competing norms of the military and public university. Drawing on multidisciplinary research literature, this exploratory study of the management of sexual assault in a ROTC program in a large public university will be completed using several research methods, including: 1) observation of ROTC sexual assault education programs currently in place and being administered; 2) interviews with ROTC cadets; 3) surveys of ROTC cadets on perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs related to sexual assault and prevention efforts; and 4) analysis of Congressional, Department of Defense, ROTC, and university documents such as legislation, code, sexual assault policies and procedures, education materials, and reports. The study seeks to identify what policies, procedures and laws are in place at the university and in the ROTC program to address sexual assault and harassment, and to measure cadet's understandings and perceptions of such policies, procedures and laws.

Adaptive behavior consists of the social, conceptual and practical skills an individual must execute to function independently in their everyday life. Individuals with Down syndrome have limitations in their adaptive behavior due to cognitive and physical deficits. The aim of this study was to examine if an exercise program would improve the adaptive behavior skills in persons with Down syndrome. The exercise intervention, Exercise for Adults with Down Syndrome (ExDS), was a semester long program where adults with Down syndrome participate in twice weekly workouts planned and executed by Arizona State University students. The workouts consisted of an aerobic warm up, aerobic exercises, resistance exercises, balance exercises and stretches. The participants' adaptive behavior and cognitive planning ability were assessed before ExDS and after ExDS. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System Second Edition (ABAS-II) was used to measure adaptive behavior. The ABAS-II consisted of a forum that addressed the Social, Conceptual and Practical domains of adaptive behavior and was filled out by the participants' caregiver. The Tower of London (ToL) was used to measure cognitive planning ability. The change in the ABAS-II scores from pre- to post-testing were statistically insignificant. The change from pre- to post-testing in the ToL scores approached statistical significance. Limitations included bias caregiver perception and respondent inconsistency. There is a need for further research on the effect of exercise on the adaptive behavior in adults with Down syndrome.
