Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

For my Barrett the Honors College senior thesis project, I decided to utilize my knowledge of curriculum design to create a set of learning Modules. I was influenced by my involvement in the Next Generation Service Corps to create these Modules around college student community impact. In the end I developed 6 Modules, each with 4-5 lessons and activities that focused on topics such as volunteerism, civic engagement, and meaningful careers. With interviews rolling through during the design process, I was able to iterate my design as I built it. The design was tested with 14 college students with positive feedback and engagement during the week-long period that it was available. Through this research and design, I found that such a collection of Modules could be beneficial to students to excite them about their potential and educate them about the opportunities that exist for them to take advantage of. This research could serve as a useful tool within the ASU community as an opportunity for the students to build up meaningful skills to create impact. ASU is passionate about education translating into real world applications and creating “changemakers”, and this collection has the opportunity to do just that.

RecyclePlus is an iOS mobile application that allows users to be knowledgeable in the realms of sustainability. It gives encourages users to be environmental responsible by providing them access to recycling information. In particular, it allows users to search up certain materials and learn about its recyclability and how to properly dispose of the material. Some searches will show locations of facilities near users that collect certain materials and dispose of the materials properly. This is a full stack software project that explores open source software and APIs, UI/UX design, and iOS development.

“Why We Vote” explores attitudes and rationales among college students regarding civic and voter engagement. The major tangible outcome of this project is a photo series displaying portraits of students paired with a short vignette about their voting or civic engagement story. To diversify the series, we have engaged participants from a broad range of personal identities and civic engagement levels. We want to give visibility to the experiences of those who are commonly cast aside, especially in regard to civic and voting initiatives. Our project utilizes personal storytelling to spark dialogue about civic engagement,
particularly among the 18-24 age demographic. We chose to use storytelling as the primary medium for our project because it is a vehicle for empathy, a lacking component of modern civic life in the United States. It provokes students to think critically about how and why they engage in civic life and connect campus communities of students with common experiences. We are interested to see how our presence on campuses impacts the level and nature of their civic dialogue and how our findings are situated within our quantitative research.

As Alzheimer’s disease (AD) increases in incidence, there is an increased investigation into the pathogenesis of the disease in hopes of finding a cure to the neurodegenerative disease. The two key hallmarks of AD consist of amyloid beta plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau fibrillary tangles. Amyloid beta is a peptide that is proteolytically cleaved from the type I transmembrane glycolytic amyloid precursor protein (APP). APP is highly conserved across species, suggesting the importance of APP in healthy brain functioning. However, when APP is cleaved through the amyloidogenic pathway it produces amyloid beta. The trafficking of APP within neurons has been a new endeavor for neurodegenerative disease research, as reduced retrograde trafficking of APP has been hypothesized to increase the likelihood of the amyloidogenic cleavage of APP, resulting in increased amyloid beta presence (Ye et al., 2017). The findings of this study suggest that transport of APP within neurons is significantly inhibited by increased extracellular glutamate concentration. The addition of human primary astrocytes within a human neuron co-culture allowed for significantly increased retrograde transport of APP within neurons, even within high glutamate conditions. These finding enhance the current field of research regarding astrocytes neuroprotective role within the brain, but bring attention to the role that astrocytes have upon regulation of the axonal transport of proteins within neurons.

There is a need within the Phoenix Metropolitan area to solve the complex issue of
veteran homelessness. According to the Veterans Affairs, over 500,000 veterans live
in Arizona, which comprises about 2.5% of the nation’s veteran’s population as of
September 30, 2017. Many veterans have neither the skills nor resources necessary
to integrate back

There is a need within the Phoenix Metropolitan area to solve the complex issue of
veteran homelessness. According to the Veterans Affairs, over 500,000 veterans live
in Arizona, which comprises about 2.5% of the nation’s veteran’s population as of
September 30, 2017. Many veterans have neither the skills nor resources necessary
to integrate back into society after their tour of duty thus leading them into
homelessness.

The goal of this thesis is to research organizations in the Phoenix Metropolitan area
that help to prevent veteran homelessness and/or assist homeless veterans in
obtaining stable housing. Programs and services provided by various organizations
are discussed, along with an analysis which reveals insufficient money, labor, and
space to fully address veteran homelessness, as well as a trend where most
organizations are trying to solve this issue on their own. Recommendations are
provided which include identifying synergies between entities to create greater impact
through partnerships, so society can improve the veteran homelessness situation and
help those who bravely served our country find stability in their personal lives.

Undergraduate Student Government Downtown (USGD) is the student advocacy organization on Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus. Its primary purpose is to appoint representatives, known as senators, to represent students in a specific ASU college and meet with university officials to discuss student needs. Senators compartmentalize their roles in various ways and do not always adhere to the expectations of their role outside of USGD meetings. This research study sought to examine how members of USGD compartmentalized their roles as student leaders. It also sought to examine the degree of separation senators placed between what they view to be their authentic selves versus the self-aspects they associate exclusively with USGD duties. The research determined compartmentalization of roles differed between levels of authority within USGD. Senators who had no other roles within the organization found it easy to remove themselves from the role after their USGD duties were completed for the day. Senior members of the organization, those who held higher positions of authority within the organization, found it less likely for them to separate their personalities from their roles. It also examined USGD’s continued use of highly structured meetings via the use of Robert’s Rules of Order. While they can provide structure in large group settings, when overused these rules cause the organization to suffer from a lack of information exchange and the ability to freely engage in debate. Robert’s Rules of Order act as a gatekeeper, making meeting language inaccessible to student constituents which leads to low amounts of constituent engagement.

Osteosarcopenia is a newly formed term that combines the symptoms of osteoporosis and sarcopenia together because of their concurrent appearances in life. They are both age-related, debilitating conditions that affect older adults’ skeleton and musculoskeletal system. Osteoporosis specifically targets the cells of the bone and make them weak and porous.

Osteosarcopenia is a newly formed term that combines the symptoms of osteoporosis and sarcopenia together because of their concurrent appearances in life. They are both age-related, debilitating conditions that affect older adults’ skeleton and musculoskeletal system. Osteoporosis specifically targets the cells of the bone and make them weak and porous. Sarcopenia attacks the skeletal muscles and deteriorates the muscle fibers, decreasing mass and strength. Both diseases put sedentary elders at high risk of sustaining fractures and proneness to fall. The manifestation of one condition typically leads to the other because of their obvious physical attachments as well as their direct chemical crosstalk. The onset of osteosarcopenia is subtle coinciding with age related processes that become greatly exacerbated and accelerated when coupled with chronic inactivity. Thus, a critical intervention for managing the disability associated with osteosarcopenia is physical activity. While some pharmacological treatments or supplements are known to have positive results in stemming further bone loss, regular participation in moderate-intensity exercises is considered the most effective treatment for attenuating further bone and muscle loss.

As a cause of negative economic, societal, and environmental effects, food waste is increasingly being seen as a sustainability issue that needs to be addressed. Reduction of food waste is preferred to recycling because it reduces the financial burden and technological innovations needed to address the issue. While there are many different approaches to reduce food waste, this paper investigates dynamic social norms as an avenue for reducing food waste. Recent studies showcased the effectiveness of using dynamic social norms to reduce meat consumption and the use of to-go cups. However, there appears to be a gap in research that investigates the impact of dynamic social norms in U.S. university community dining settings. This study piloted the use of dynamic social norms to intervene in post-consumer food waste behaviors at Arizona State University. Specifically, this study compared food waste amounts in a location with and without an intervention tool as well as conducted interviews to monitor any self-reported behavior change. Results show that dynamic social norms can promote behavior change in terms of food waste when compared to a control location without the intervention. Further, this study advocates for monitoring food habits through both quantitative and qualitative analysis in order to identify potential behavior changes that could not be captured to the same extent by a mono-methodological approach.

Forensic science is the application of science to matters of law, especially criminal investigation and procedure.​ ForenSICK Science​, on the other hand, is an educational YouTube channel. It was created in early 2019 after listening to two people on a podcast confidently preach surprisingly inaccurate information about forensic science. My goal in the creation of the channel was to give people the proper information regarding the practice. This goal grew to encompass several different fields including continued education practices, informal and nonformal learning, and combating “science speak.” Using YouTube as a tool in this journey was the first step in combating forensic inaccuracies.

In recent years, marketing has taken a large shift into the digital world. With the growing popularity of social media, many companies have been doing most of their advertising through platforms such as Instagram, and have been heavily using influencers, in order to drive their business. With the popularity of social media, small online businesses have been emerging. According to sources like eMarketer, e-commerce is the only trillion-dollar industry growing at a double-digit percentage each year (Moore). Among these small businesses, is the growing idea of dropshipping. Dropshipping is a system in which products can be chosen from a manufacturer, and sold via a website, with no need for inventory from the selling party. The goal of this research is to harness the power of social media, in order to drive a successful e-commerce business. The research entails creating a Shopify dropship store, and using social media platforms, such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to effectively advertise and drive the online business. The first steps were to create social media pages for the business, in order to establish credibility. All the products will be sourced from AliExpress, and then sold via the website created on Shopify. Consumers will order from the website, and process their payment that way as well, but will be receiving the package from AliExpress, which removes the necessity to have inventory, and minimizes shipping costs. The products sold were chosen based on survey results, for what consumers would most likely purchase from an online store. The store's name is “Urban Angel”, and primarily sells accessories, such as phone cases, jewelry, hair accessories, and purses. These are all priced at a neutral pricing strategy, and can compete with other online retailers. This is necessary, because there are so many e-commerce businesses emerging every day, it is important to make sure that it can stand out in some way.
