Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Innovation Space is a course designed to challenge senior students to collaborate on an interdisciplinary basis while completing a thought-provoking project. Each project is designed to allow students to address real-world issues. My team, Leverage, has created a product suite for power wheelchair users. Our product suite equips a wheelchair with a backup camera, an expanding lap desk, and a headrest with integrated Bluetooth speakers and microphone. These products are designed to increase the productive potential of the disabled, particularly quadriplegics injured around the C4 vertebra level. During the course of the program, my team will create physical prototypes of our product and I will create a full business plan. The individual written portion of my thesis will consist of discussion of a branding framework developed by creative director Patrick Hanlon. In addition, I will suggest methodology for effectively branding our company.

Supply Chain Management has many fundamental principles that can be applied to all businesses to improve efficiency and create more transparency, this in turn, encourages collaboration and fosters healthy professional relationships. Using the fundamental principles of supply chain management, I evaluated the Veterans Administration(VA) hospital in regards to their provided treatment for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) to look for places where efficiency can be improved. I analyzed the problem in relation to Supply Chain Management, PTSD, and design in order to create a more complete solution. Once these areas were addressed, I proposed a solution that included creating a separate clinic for PTSD treatment that addressed the current issues in regards to treatment at the VA hospital. My goal was to improve space efficiencies and design a treatment environment that is more evolved and conducive to veterans suffering from PTSD. Though the creation of one PTSD clinic will not be able to completely change the system, it can be a step in the right direction to bring about the change that needs to occur within the VA medical system.

This study analyzes the connection between participation in Camp Carey and success at ASU by collecting data from students on their participation and their subsequent performance relative to their peers at individual grade-levels. The main question asked is, "Is Camp Carey beneficial towards contributing to the overall social aptitude, academic success, campus involvement, leadership, or work experience of students?" By separating the different engagement categories by grade-level, the study will be able to explore these and other possible solutions on how to better improve the process for furthering student engagement for future students. The results of this research will give the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University an opportunity to make changes and improve student commitment to benefit the students, staff, and anyone directly associated with the Camp Carey program.

Edward Snowden's publishing classified information about the existence of the Section 215 bulk collection metadata program set in motion the largest debate about potential abuse in by spying agencies since the Watergate Scandal in the 1970's. This paper will examine the metadata program by: First, the relevant background which includes the establishment of the 20th century intelligence community, intelligence reforms in the wake of the Watergate scandal, and the changes stemming from the 9/11 attacks. Second, the Section 215 metadata program itself will be discussed, including its lawfulness. Third and finally, an analysis of potential reforms will be discussed, including ones advanced by government commissions. Ultimately, the Section 215 program has demonstrated compelling legal authority, positive benefits to national security, and a minimal need for reform. This conclusion is based on the program being consistent with the legal spirit of the Watergate Reforms, the language of the post-9/11 laws, the nature of the program, and the robust oversight protocols imposed upon the program.

In the fall of 2012 I had the incredible experience of studying abroad in Rome, Italy. While there I was able to travel to several different European countries and experience the local lifestyle from a student's perspective. During my travels I found it difficult to find a succinct weekend travel guide for the city that I was in. Travel books are expensive and burdensome for backpackers, and wireless internet connection is rather scarce in European cities. I often found myself looking at a church or historical monument and not knowing why I was surrounded by tons of tourists. The entire semester I had hoped for a detailed, easy to read, itinerary for major European cities. I thought it would be even better to gear it towards young independent travelers. A guide for backpackers made by backpackers so to speak. No longer will student travelers feel the need to buy a $40 travel book for a country that they may only be spending a few days in. This guide will contain everything one needs to know such as where to sleep, what to eat and drink, and how much it will all cost. No longer will a young traveler be staring at a famous memorial and not know one piece of information about it. No longer will backpackers wanting to experience nightlife have to wander around a city until they find a tourist filled pub. "The European Explorer" will be the must have guide for all future backpackers. Much of my research is from personal experience. I was able to see firsthand what students enjoy, and what they do not enjoy while traveling. Based off of my itineraries I will use the internet and travel books to pull the most vital information and transform it into one itinerary. It is up to the user what he or she wants to do or see. There will be options for various interests such as art, religion, architecture etc. The itinerary as a whole is meant to be a grand trip of Europe, but can be divided up to the users liking. My sources vary from travel blogs and forums to history websites to travel books. I will be using approximately 2-3 resources for each destination. A forward to my thesis will include general vital information such as how to ride the rail, safety tips, and hostel information. This information is best to be read by the user before travel has started. Another addition will be an analysis of travel guides, including the history of them, the profitability of the guides, and the future of travel guides.

The following creative project was a two part study regarding the wedding and event planning industry. Part one consisted of planning and executing an event followed by an analysis of the event in terms of strengths, weaknesses, and customer feedback. Part two consisted of evaluating a potential wedding planning company by the standards of the Business Model Canvas Method. The overall goal of this project was to determine if I would be pursuing a career as an independent wedding and event consultant or exploring other career options based on the research conducted and which option would be best aligned with my desires and career aspirations.

We were interested in whether or not certain demographics, such as gender, age, education level, and academic major, would affect an individual's political awareness. In particular, we hypothesized that Political Science majors would have a higher level of political awareness than Non-Political Science majors. In an in-person survey, we asked

We were interested in whether or not certain demographics, such as gender, age, education level, and academic major, would affect an individual's political awareness. In particular, we hypothesized that Political Science majors would have a higher level of political awareness than Non-Political Science majors. In an in-person survey, we asked participants on the Arizona State University, Tempe campus a series of nine questions measuring government structure and procedure, current politics, and policy issues. Our findings concluded that, within our sample: 1) on average, Political Science majors outperformed Non-Political Science majors 2) education level appears to be positively associated with political awareness 3) like education, age appears to be positively associated with political awareness, however, there seemed to be a peak at 21 years of age 4) males outperformed females, as suggested by research studying the gender gap in political knowledge. Because our sample population was not randomly selected, and this report focuses on descriptive statistics, we cannot generalize or comment on our findings' statistical significance. However, many of our findings are supported by current research and, with further specification, may be of interest to university officials who seek to measure the political knowledge and awareness of various demographic groups on campus.

The beautiful game is unpredictable. Arguably half of soccer is entirely out of our control, instead being determined by a simple concept: luck. But what of the other 50%? Ultimately, the goal of the rapidly-advancing technologies and analytics in on-field sports performance is to maximize the elements that we \u2014 the coaches, players, decision-makers, and analysts \u2014 truly control. Once perceived as too mathematical and systemized, contradicting coaches' intuitions, sports sciences are burgeoning in the sports arena both in applied and mainstream popularity. While the industry has its critics and is far shy of its pinnacle, its advancements and successes cannot be ignored. From the training ground to match day decision-making, analytics are embedded in soccer and sport. Technology and analytics are vastly utilized throughout sporting organizations across a myriad of sports and purposes: scouting and drafting, fan experience, ticketing, etc. However, while these areas must be addressed in discussing the success of analytics in assessing situations and reducing uncertainty, my central thesis relates to the technological capabilities and corresponding analytical tools utilized to identify, assess, and improve on-field soccer performance: match analysis. This paper's core focuses on optimizing performance in soccer players in three specific areas of performance: technical abilities and tactics, physiology, and neuroscience.

Prenatal care is a widely administered preventative care service, and its adequate use has been shown to decrease poor infant and maternal health outcomes. Today however, in the United States, preterm birth rates remain among the highest in the industrialized world, with low socioeconomic women having the highest risk of preterm births. This group of women also face the greatest barriers to access adequate prenatal care in the United States. This paper explores the viability of short message service to help bridge gaps in prenatal care for low socioeconomic women in the United States and provides areas for further research.

Advertising to the Millennial Generation is an honors thesis project that combines research with a creative application. The thesis is broken into three main sections: a literature review of the Millennial Generation, three case studies identifying brands or advertising campaigns that have successfully reached Generation Y, and the application of these findings to an advertising campaign with additional marketing mix elements for Bose headphones.
Before creating a campaign targeting Millennials, this thesis first identifies which consumers belong in the Millennial demographic. The definition given looks beyond the ‘age 18-34’ demographic information and analyzes the generation’s unique characteristics, their feelings of being misunderstood by businesses, the importance of social media and technology in their world, and what motivates them to take action.
The subsequent case studies examine the advertising tactics of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, the burgeoning social news and entertainment website BuzzFeed, and Beats by Dre headphones. Each of these brands successfully captured the Gen Y demographic group, with an emphasis on the younger end of the 18-34 age spectrum, and effectively communicated their understanding of Millennials’ culture. Each of the three campaigns contained social or digital elements to create engaging and relevant content for the niche of younger Millennials. Immediately following the case studies, best practices are outlined to summarize the findings.
Finally, a digital campaign is proposed for Bose headphones. The literature review, case studies, and best practices contributed to the culminating campaign, which will allow Bose to reach the younger Millennial audience.
