Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

The goal of this project was to design and create a genetic construct that would allow for <br/>tumor growth to be induced in the center of the wing imaginal disc of Drosophila larvae, the <br/>R85E08 domain, using a heat shock. The resulting transgene would be combined with other <br/>transgenes in a single fly that would allow for simultaneous expression of the oncogene and, in <br/>the surrounding cells, other genes of interest. This system would help establish Drosophila as a <br/>more versatile and reliable model organism for cancer research. Furthermore, pilot studies were <br/>performed, using elements of the final proposed system, to determine if tumor growth is possible <br/>in the center of the disc, which oncogene produces the best results, and if oncogene expression <br/>induced later in development causes tumor growth. Three different candidate genes were <br/>investigated: RasV12, PvrACT, and Avli.

Microfluidic devices represent a growing technology in the world of analytical chemistry. Serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) utilizes microfluidic devices to generate droplets of an aqueous buffer containing protein crystals, which are then fired out as a jet in the beam of an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL). A crucial part of the device is its method of droplet detection. This project presents a design for a capacitive sensor that uses a unique electrode configuration to detect the difference in capacitance between the aqueous and oil phases. This design was developed using MATLAB and COMSOL Multiphysics simulations and printed using high-resolution 3D printing. Results show that this design can successfully distinguish between the two immiscible liquids, confirming it as a possible detection method in future SFX experiments.

This project begins with an overview of the female reproductive tract microenvironment. It outlines the microenvironment of the vaginal, cervical, and endometrial epithelium and the interactions with immune cells and hormone cycles. The review also outlines the models currently used to study the female reproductive tract. The second chapter of the thesis is a study of the effects of pathogenic and commensal bacteria P. micra, F. magna, and F. nucleatum on cervical epithelial cells. This study analyzes cytotoxic effects after 24 hour infection of these bacteria. This was assessed through crystal violet staining, conventional pcr of cDNA synthesized from extracted cervical RNA, and LDH analysis. There is also an attempted biofilm assay. It was concluded that bacteria P. micra, F. magna and F. nucleatum have cytotoxic potential. This was not expected as F. magna is largely understood to be a commensal bacteria in the vaginal microbiome.

As obesity continues to grow across the world, better understanding of the disease, treatments, and outcomes becomes increasingly important. Animal models used to study these aspects of obesity have 3 phases: experimental (EXP), caloric restriction (CR), and weight regain (WR). For this study an ad libitum high-fat diet (HFD) was used to induce hyperphagia and weight gain in Sprague-Dawley rats in the experimental period. Rats then transitioned to a chow (CH) diet and energy intake (EI; kcal/day) was reduced 40-60% during the caloric restriction period. In weight regain, rats were given chow ad libitum. This protocol was run 3 times, once every academic school year (2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020). Sample sizes listed in the order of high fat (HF) rats then chow (CH) rats for each year were as follows: 2017-2018 (n=11, n=8), 2018-2019 (n=12, n=8), 2019-2020 (n=14, n=10). Analysis of energy intake was performed on the first week of the experimental phase and the first week of the weight regain phase. <br/><br/>HF EXP rats showed hyperphagic average daily EIs compared to CH EXP rats for all 3 years (p<0.01-0.0001). HF WR rats were similar to CH WR rats in all applicable years in terms of average daily EI. However, both HF WR and CH WR rats were hyperphagic. HFD caused hyperphagia to be highest at the beginning of the first week of EXP and then EI decreased significantly as days went by. However, in WR, hyperphagia (HF WR and CH WR) was flat throughout the week. Obesity prone (OP) rats during EXP had similar EI behavior to obesity resistant (OR) rats during EXP within the same year. During WR though, OP rats had significantly greater average daily EI (p<0.05-0.001) compared to WR OR rats within the same year for 2 out of the 3 years. <br/><br/>These results suggest that HFD induces hyperphagia during weight gain. In weight regain, where HFD is absent, HF rats and CH rats are both hyperphagic. This suggests that WR induces hyperphagia in both rat groups. WR also induces a greater increase in EI for OP rats compared to OR rats. Therefore, hyperphagia seems to be driven by 2 mechanisms (HFD and WR). The profiles of the responses are different however. HFD induces hyperphagia that decreases over the first week and the level of hyperphagia is similar between OP and OR rats. WR induces hyperphagia that remains stable in the first week and is more pronounced in OP rats compared to OR rats.

This study aims to produce efficient and effective group writing workshops for students within the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. To balance two opposing theories in writing center pedagogy - the direct instruction theory and the student-led/ collaborative theory - this study also aims to determine whether a balanced combination of these approaches in writing workshops will increase student confidence in their writing abilities. Several writing workshops were held over Zoom utilizing a combination of direct teaching methods and collaborative techniques. Students were then surveyed to determine whether they found the workshops helpful, learned new skills, and/or grew more confident in their abilities. The student responses proved the hypothesis that a combined approach leads to an increase in student confidence.

Though schizophrenia was categorized as a mental illness over 100 years ago, there is a plethora of knowledge that continues to perplex the scientific and medical community alike. This tragic mental disorder affects approximately 1% of the general population, and many of these individuals are homeless if left untreated. Each schizophrenia patient has a different set of symptoms, so all of these patients experience a variety of positive and negative symptoms. Negative symptoms are called so as they are in absence, and some examples include apathy, anhedonia, lack of motivation, reduced social drive, and reduced cognitive functioning. Positive behavior, on the other hand, is a change in behavior or thoughts such as visual or auditory hallucinations, delusions, confused thoughts, disorganized speech, and trouble concentrating. Because schizophrenia patients do not share the exact same set of symptoms, research in schizophrenia requires a tremendous amount of medical resources. Over the last few years, new studies have started in the field of schizophrenia involving proteomics, or the study of proteins and their function. This new frontier gives doctors and scientists alike a new opportunity to improve the quality of life of schizophrenia patients by providing a potential method through which patients would receive individualized treatment based on their specific symptoms.

Melanoma is one of the most severe forms of skin cancer and can be life-threatening due to metastasis if not caught early on in its development. Over the past decade, the U.S. Government added a Healthy People 2020 objective to reduce the melanoma skin cancer rate in the U.S. population.

Melanoma is one of the most severe forms of skin cancer and can be life-threatening due to metastasis if not caught early on in its development. Over the past decade, the U.S. Government added a Healthy People 2020 objective to reduce the melanoma skin cancer rate in the U.S. population. Now that the decade has come to a close, this research investigates possible large-scale risk factors that could lead to incidence of melanoma in the population using logistic regression and propensity score matching. Logistic regression results showed that Caucasians are 14.765 times more likely to get melanoma compared to non-Caucasians; however, after adjustment using propensity scoring, this value was adjusted to 11.605 times more likely for Caucasians than non-Caucasians. Cholesterol, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and Hypertension predictors also showed significance in the initial logistic regression. By using the results found in this experiment, the door has been opened for further analysis of larger-scale predictors and gives public health programs the initial information needed to create successful skin safety advocacy plans.

Living a healthy and balanced life can be difficult for college students at Arizona State<br/>University due to the barrier of high cost of healthy food. To understand more about this problem<br/>we conducted research on the Tempe campus through surveys and virtual focus groups. We<br/>discovered that the cost of healthy food is one of the main barriers preventing students from<br/>eating healthy. We also learned that the students would be more willing to eat healthier if they<br/>could access healthy foods at a more reasonable price. Our solution to this problem was Eunoia,<br/>a service that allows students to receive discounts on healthy food and incentivize them to eat<br/>healthier in the future. Our company creates an innovative relationship between our customers,<br/>their private health insurance companies and local grocery stores throughout the Phoenix Metro<br/>area. Students at Arizona State University will be able to purchase healthy food items discounted<br/>by up to 30%. These discounts will be funded by their health insurance companies as well as the<br/>local grocery stores they purchase from. Our business model allows our customers to live<br/>healthier lives while also providing value to partnered health insurance companies and grocery<br/>stores. Once we established our business model, we spoke with students at Arizona State<br/>University and representatives from health insurance companies. Through these demographics,<br/>we received positive feedback and early traction with our idea. Our goal is to be able to<br/>implement our product in the Arizona State University community and then expand this product<br/>into a more general market to help all people live a pure and balanced life.

In this formative research project, we seek to better understand the general barriers to refugee access to higher education. Using mixed methods research--which included surveys, interviews, and course data--we evaluate the benefits and challenges experienced by refugee students in Israel who are enrolled in Arizona State University's Education for Humanity programs. In the end, this case study resulted in 24 recommend programmatic changes designed to eliminate the barriers that prevent refugee students from accessing and succeeding in higher education.

Language has a critical role as a social determinant of health and a source of healthcare disparities. Rhetorical devices are ubiquitous in medicine and are often used to persuade or inform care team members. Rhetorical devices help a healthcare team acknowledge and interpret narratives. For example, metaphors are frequently used as rhetorical devices by patients to describe cancer, including winning or losing a battle, surviving a fight, war, potentially implying that the patient feels helpless like a pawn fighting in a struggle directed by the physician, thus reducing patient autonomy and agency. However, this occidental approach is flawed because it excessively focuses on the individual's agency and marginalizes external factors, such as cultural beliefs and social support (Sontag, 1989). Although there is a large body of research about how the rhetoric of medicine affects patients in the United States, there is a lack of such research about how patient experiences' rhetoric can help increase the understanding of Latino populations' unique social determinants. This creative project aims to analyze the rhetorical differences in the description of disease amongst Latino and American communities, translating to creating an educational module for a Spanish for biomedical sciences class. The objective is to increase future healthcare professionals' ability to understand how the composition of descriptions and medical rhetoric in different mediums of humanities can serve as critical tools to analyze social determinants in Latino healthcare delivery.
