Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

The ASU COVID-19 testing lab process was developed to operate as the primary testing site for all ASU staff, students, and specified external individuals. Tests are collected at various collection sites, including a walk-in site at the SDFC and various drive-up sites on campus; analysis is conducted on ASU campus and results are distributed virtually to all patients via the Health Services patient portal. The following is a literature review on past implementations of various process improvement techniques and how they can be applied to the ABCTL testing process to achieve laboratory goals. At Arizona State University, the Disability Resource Center provides disabled students transportation around campus. This transportation service known as DART is composed of approximately 20 student workers and 9 carts that pick riders up based on pre-determined pick-up times and locations. With the current system, the scheduling of drivers to riders is inefficient, and in response, a tool was developed to schedule the rides in a faster manner. A demonstration of the new tool resulted in a time reduction of 98%.

With a rapidly decreasing amount of resources for construction, wood and bamboo have been suggested as renewable materials for increased use in the future to attain sustainability. Through a literature review, bamboo and wood growth, manufacturing and structural attributes were compared and then scored in a weighted matrix to determine the option that shows the higher rate of sustainability. In regards to the growth phase, which includes water usage, land usage, growth time, bamboo and wood showed similar characteristics overall, with wood scoring 1.11% higher than bamboo. Manufacturing, which captures the extraction and milling processes, is experiencing use of wood at levels four times those of bamboo, as bamboo production has not reached the efficiency of wood within the United States. Structural use proved to display bamboo’s power, as it scored 30% higher than wood. Overall, bamboo received a score 15% greater than that of wood, identifying this fast growing plant as the comparatively more sustainable construction material.

For my honors thesis, I have been working on a project for Johnson & Johnson as a part of ASU's Innovation Space program. Throughout this process, I have worked with an interdisciplinary team of students from engineering, design, and business backgrounds. The goal of this project was to come up with new and innovative ways to protect skin from insect aggressors. We began the project by conducting market research, and going through several phases of product development, before eventually creating a working prototype of our solution. The process has been broken up into 7 phases over the course of two consecutive semesters and culminates with a product presentation to Johnson and Johnson shareholders. Stage four of this process, which was the final stage of semester one, involved narrowing down the ideas we came up with in our brainstorming sessions. Our team agreed upon our tree strongest ideas to move forward with. At the end of this phase, we produced a professional proposal for each of our three ideas. These proposals were presented during a showcase in December, and we used feedback from this showcase to determine how best to proceed in stage five. In stage 5 we selected a single idea from our three proposals to work on exclusively for the rest of the process. That idea was the Adamor device. We also began to look deeper into the technical and functional issues that needed to be incorporated into our solution. Furthermore, our team choose the aesthetic direction we want to pursue for our product branding. Stage 6 of this process involved finalizing all aspects of our concept including business feasibility, design, and final features that will be included in our working prototype. In stage 7, we produced a final product, and presented our prototype to representatives from Johnson & Johnson for review.

Neurotact x Exotact is the product developed by Team Kensho in response to Adidas's primary research question, "How can Adidas embrace a true circular economy with far more reuse and recycling incorporated, while ensuring that all products travel from factory to foot in a more sustainable way while providing an engaging consumer experience?" Neurotact x Exotact is a modular football helmet chinstrap with an added compression neckband that has built-in motion monitoring capabilities. Neurotact x Exotact reduces development of CTE through updating football coaches on player condition through a mobile app in real time. Using motion centers installed in the chin cup, Neurotact x Exotact measures potential brain trauma received while the compression neckband reduces brain trauma through decreasing angular rotation of the head during high-risk scenarios. This thesis documents Team Kensho's attempt at proving the business model of Neurotact x Exotact. The final business report on Neurotact x Exotact is the culmination of all the research and business development conducted in order to validate Neurotact x Exotact as a valid product that meets stakeholder expectations, makes global impact, generates savings, creates sustainability, and improves the world through sport. Neurotact x Exotact is proven through the lean startup business model, where various assumptions on customer segments, value proposition, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structure are examined and confirmed through market research and analysis. In addition to the final business report, additional documents include the Fall 2017 business report to give background on the development process behind Neurotact x Exotact as well as a reflection paper on the W.P Carey academic experience and the role this experience had in the creation of Neurotact x Exotact.

Project management is the crucial component for managing and mitigating the inherent risks associated with changes in technology and innovation. The procedures to track the schedule, budget, and scope of various projects in the standard worlds of engineering, manufacturing, construction, etc., are essential elements to the success of the project. Cost overruns, schedule changes, and other natural risks must be managed effectively. But what happens when a project manager is tasked with delivering an attraction that needs to withstand harsh weather conditions, and millions of people enjoying it every year, for a company with arguably the highest standards for quality and guest satisfaction? This would describe the project managers at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) and the projects they oversee have tight budgets, aggressive schedules and require a bit more pixie dust than other engineering projects. However, the universal truth is that no matter the size or the scope of the endeavor, project management processes are absolutely essential to ensuring that every team member can effectively collaborate to deliver the best product.

This thesis examines a variety of techniques implemented in modern senior design classes at Arizona State University with a special focus on the mechanical engineering senior capstone the traditional ABET capstone mechanical engineering capstone course, as well as the InnovationSpace Program. First, an overview regarding the growing profession of engineering and its relation to academic education is examined. Next, program and project overviews of both the capstone senior design course and the InnovationSpace are detailed, followed by a comparison of the two course's curriculum. Finally, key differences are highlighted, and suggestions introduced that might serve to improve both courses in the future. The senior design capstone course was found to lack accountability and diversity leading to a lack of innovative solutions. However, the course simultaneously succeeded in maintaining wellaccepted traditional engineer practices and documentation. The InnovationSpace program on the other hand provides accountability, diversity, and modern approaches to product development.

The listing price of residential rental real estate is dependent upon property specific attributes. These attributes involve data that can be tabulated as categorical and continuous predictors. The forecasting model presented in this paper is developed using publicly available, property specific information sourced from the Zillow and Trulia online real estate databases. The following fifteen predictors were tracked for forty-eight rental listings in the 85281 area code: housing type, square footage, number of baths, number of bedrooms, distance to Arizona State University’s Tempe Campus, crime level of the neighborhood, median age range of the neighborhood population, percentage of the neighborhood population that is married, median year of construction of the neighborhood, percentage of the population commuting longer than thirty minutes, percentage of neighborhood homes occupied by renters, percentage of the population commuting by transit, and the number of restaurants, grocery stores, and nightlife within a one mile radius of the property. Through regression analysis, the significant predictors of the listing price of a rental property in the 85281 area code were discerned. These predictors were used to form a forecasting model. This forecasting model explains 75.5% of the variation in listing prices of residential rental real estate in the 85281 area code.

This study aims to explore the prevalence of smartphone, smartwatch, and fitness tracker ownership among college students, and compare the popularity of each device in tracking health-related habits such as physical activity, eating, and sleep. In addition, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of each device for achieving personal health goals in all three categories. Research for this study was conducted using an Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved survey that was distributed electronically to various Greek and student organizations around Arizona State University campuses. In total, 183 responses were considered, with participants ranging from ages 18 to 23. Participants were required to own or possess a smartphone to be eligible to complete the survey. After seven days of data collection, the results were then analyzed using Qualtrics. The results revealed that smartwatch and fitness tracker ownership is not prevalent within the Arizona State University demographic. In addition, after comparing device popularity across each habit-tracking category, it is apparent that the smartphone is the most used device for tracking. Finally, when looking at device effectiveness in relation to achieving health goals, smartwatches consistently scored higher than smartphones. Supplemental research should be conducted to further explore the prevalence and effectiveness of habit tracking. This research should include a larger sample size and a more evenly spread gender demographic.

The purpose of this study is to create and establish an efficient and cost-effective solution to decrease the effects of sedentarism in pregnant women. Our team was given a propelling question, from which we had to narrow down our scope and conduct primary and secondary research to determine our ideal customers. The design of our study intends to imitate the development of a startup where ideas are created from scratch and the final deliverable is a business model plan that shows some sort of traction. Our first major finding is that a sedentary lifestyle can be treated without major challenges in low-risk pregnancies. We determined that uncertainty and lack of concise and clear information is one of the main causes of an increased level of sedentary behavior in low-risk pregnancies. A significant driver for women to do some sort of activity or exercise stems from feeling supported, which doesn’t necessarily come from their partner or couple, but instead from other women that are going to a similar process as them. There are apps in the market that intend to serve pregnant women; however, there is not one that incorporates a social aspect to achieve their goal. In conclusion, there is opportunity in the market for a socially integrated pregnancy fitness app. The Gleam concept has been consciously developed to decrease sedentary behavior through concise, clear, and reliable information and by encouraging women through a socialization platform.
