Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Pediatric chronic pain is common and predicts risk for psychological and pain problems into adulthood. Biopsychosocial risk factors for the development of chronic pediatric pain have been examined, but the key health behavior of caloric consumption has not been explored. Adult and animal data suggest that caloric intake is positively related to chronic pain, and that adiposity and stress-related biological factors may serve as potential mediators. This study predicted that among children: 1) adiposity, flattened diurnal cortisol slopes, and caloric consumption are related to chronic pain, and 2) the caloric consumption—pain relation is mediated by elevated adiposity and/or flattened diurnal cortisol slopes. Methods: Twin children (N = 733) were drawn from the Arizona Twin Project sample. Measures included caregiver-reported caloric intake via five daily food diaries (Age-8); adiposity (composite of waist circumference, body mass index, body fat percentage) and diurnal cortisol slopes via three days of salivary cortisol sampling (Age-9); and caregiver-reported monthly chronic pain (Age-10). Results: Multilevel models (accounting for clustering within families) with sex, age, socioeconomic status, puberty, race/ethnicity as covariates, showed that caloric intake predicted greater waist circumference, which in turn predicted elevated chronic pain. However, adiposity, waist circumference, and diurnal cortisol slopes did not mediate the caloric intake-chronic pain relation. Discussion: Consistent with the literature, caloric intake predicted adiposity, and adiposity predicted pain in a diverse sample of children. More comprehensive assessment of behavioral (sleep, diet quality) and biopsychosocial factors (e.g. inflammation, cortisol; injury; catastrophizing) may aid efforts to prevent pediatric chronic pain.

Latinos make up the fastest growing ethnic minority group in the United States and are at higher risk for the developmental of internalizing symptoms in adolescence than other ethnic groups (Merikangas et al., 2010). Rumination has been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor associated with several internalizing disorders such as depression, anxiety, and comorbidities of the two (McLaughlin & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2011; Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008). Further, indicators of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (i.e., flatter diurnal cortisol slopes [DCS] and greater cortisol awakening responses [CAR]) are associated with greater risk of internalizing disorders and chronic stress (Adam et al., 2010; Adam et al., 2017). Notably, no studies have examined the association between rumination and the diurnal cortisol slope in Latino populations, and literature on the relation of rumination and the CAR is mixed (Cropley et al., 2015; Hilt et al., 2017; Zoccola et al., 2011). Leveraging self-reported rumination as well as gold-standard salivary cortisol collection procedures (Stalder et al., 2016), the current study sought to elucidate associations between daily rumination and diurnal cortisol in an adolescent Latino sample by examining gender differences and bicultural competence as potential moderators of this association. Results indicated a significant but small association between night-before rumination on problems/stress and next-day DCS. Further, gender differences were detected in the effects of same-day rumination and the CAR. Greater rumination on feelings was associated with a smaller CAR the same day in males, while greater rumination on problems/stress was linked with a greater CAR the same day in females. In addition, there were no buffering effects of bicultural competence. Findings inform future research regarding potential bidirectional relations of daily rumination and the CAR, as well was how different kinds of daily rumination may have differing associations with the CAR of males and females.

Students in academic environments receive near-constant feedback about both their own abilities as well as the performance of their peers which could significantly alter their cognitive and learning outcomes. This research investigates whether this social feedback concerning peer ability would improve students’ cognitive performance as measured by a visual working memory (VWM) task. Specifically, the present study provides either positive or negative feedback by means of peers’ performance to test for changes in the quality (memory precision) and the memorability (memory failure rate) of visual working memory representations. The effect of feedback on individual confidence was also examined, as feedback might impact subjective confidence instead of object task performance. Memory precision, participant guess rate, and confidence were compared across both halves of the experiment to determine potential time differences. Participants (N=105) were each administered a 300-trial Delayed Estimation Task to assess visual working memory ability. Participants were asked to rate their confidence in their task response after each trial and were all informed of their own response accuracy after every block of 30 trials. Along with personal feedback after each block, individuals were randomly assigned to view feedback ranking their performance as more or less accurate than other students. Results indicate a nonsignificant effect of peer feedback type on individual memory precision, guess rate, and confidence, which ran contrary to experimental hypotheses. These trends could have occurred due to the presence of participant-based moderating factors that could impact how certain individuals respond to feedback. Additionally, significant increases in both the precision of participants’ memory representations and the rate at which they guessed on the Delayed Estimation Task were observed across time. Together, these findings highlight the need for further research on the nuanced effects of social feedback on neural processing in order to improve student cognition over time.

Family influences are known predictors of adolescent health and well-being trajectories, yet little research has investigated how adolescents’ orientation to family may be associated with their physiological stress responses. Influenced by the strength-based approach to culture, this study evaluated 418 Hispanic adolescents' familism values and perceived life stress in family, school, and peer domains to investigate prospective associations with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis stress responses to the Group Public Speaking Task for Adolescents (GPST-A). Prior growth-mixture modeling on this sample revealed a five-class solution of cortisol responding to the GPST-A that was used here as the dependent variable: one class showed a more pronounced pattern of reactivity, potentially indicative of hyper-responsivity to the stress task; two classes showed evidence of a low to moderate cortisol response, potentially indicative of an adaptive physiological response to the challenge; and two classes showed patterns of non-responsivity, potentially indicative of hypo-responsivity. Results demonstrate that the role of familism is nuanced in the context of stressors, potentially offering both promotive and risk-amplifying effects for the physiological stress response system. This study offered several novel findings in the relation between cultural factors, salient stressors of adolescence, and HPA activity.

School racial/ethnic diversity has been linked to positive developmental outcomes for youth in early adolescence (Graham, 2018). The purpose of this study was to examine whether school diversity and co-ethnic representation was associated with academic outcomes of children in middle childhood. Given mixed findings in previous research, this study explored whether the effects of school diversity and co-ethnic representation on academic achievement were moderated by the ethnicity of the individual in a sample of twins in middle childhood (N=485; Mage= 8 8.36 years, SD = .62). Parent-report, teacher-report, and objective ratings of academic outcomes were used. Results indicated that school diversity was positively and significantly associated with teacher reported achievement (b = .80, p < .05) across the full sample. Moderation analyses suggest that greater school diversity was associated with lower parent-reported and objective academic scores for European American youth, but higher teacher-reported and objective academic outcomes for ethnic minority youth. Results indicated that, across the full sample, co-ethnic representation was significantly and negatively associated with one measure of objective academic outcomes (b = -7.99, p < .05). Contrary to hypotheses, greater co-ethnic representation was associated with better teacher-reported and objective academic outcomes for European American youth, but lower objective academic outcomes for ethnic minority children. Findings demonstrate that the ethnic composition of schools are associated with academic outcomes of children in middle childhood, but findings vary by measurement of diversity (i.e., diversity index vs. co-ethnic representation and by the child’s own race/ethnicity.

It is possible that voluntary studies on the effects of divorce fail to capture the perspectives of offspring who may be deterred from volunteering by their negative experiences of the divorce of their parents. This issue of non-response bias would cause researchers to gather unrepresentative samples that ultimately create an unrepresentative picture on the effects of divorce. The problem of non-response bias may also be a possible explanation for why research shows that small differences in psychological problems exist between children of divorce and children from intact families. This study sought to identify if non-response bias compromises the external validity of a sample of college students of divorce. To answer this question we conducted this study through the use of the introductory psychology pre screening study that is administered every semester to introductory psychology students at Arizona State University. We surveyed undergraduate introductory psychology students, all of whom completed a required prescreen survey for research credit. The students who indicated they were from divorced families, or whose parents were “never married and not still together”, were invited to participate in a follow up study to “to understand young adults’ perspectives on their parents’ divorce”. The students who responded to our invitation were compared to the students who did not volunteer in terms of their prescreen data. Volunteers did not differ from non-volunteers on seven out of the ten dependent measures. Volunteers differed from non-volunteers in terms of their closeness to their fathers, in terms of the parents conflict they experienced during the two years before and the two years after their parents permanently separated. Volunteers were more likely to be closer to their fathers and more likely to have experienced more parent conflict than non-volunteers. We are unaware of any studies on the subject of divorce that have had a similar opportunity to address the issue of non-response bias and its effects on the external validity of a college sample of divorce. This study should be replicated to determine the reliability of the results.

This project examines biophilic design principles to demonstrate the impact it can have on the well-being of college students at Arizona State University. This paper details our collaboration with Hayden Library, and design elements proposed using biophilic design for the new Prayer and Meditation room as part of the 2019 renovations of the library. We will explore and explain what biophilia/biophilic design is and the specific impacts it can have on humans by including a literature review of previous studies and some in-person research experiences. The literature examined includes how biophilic design has specific positive effects on humans and how we can apply this to students visiting the newly renovated Hayden Library. This project also contains data and information from a workshop (November 1, 2018) organized to gather input from professionals at Shepley Bulfinch for the design of the Prayer and Meditation room. The input from the designers is combined with the body of research on biophilic design to present
to the Hayden Library 2020 renovations team.

This study examined whether cortisol changes caused by examination stress are more associated with acute psychological state or physical symptoms of stress. Participants’ salivary cortisol was assayed before and after taking a final examination, and a survey was administered to assess their psychological state for depression, tension, and fatigue, as well as the degree to which they experienced a variety of physical symptoms. Physical symptoms, tension, and depression were found to positively correlate with changes in cortisol across the examination period with depression showing the strongest correlation. No correlation was observed between fatigue and changes in cortisol during the examination period. Additionally, physical symptoms were found to positively correlate with average cortisol across the examination period while depression and fatigue were found to negatively correlate with average cortisol across the examination period. No correlation was observed between tension and average cortisol during the examination period. None of these findings were statistically significant, which suggests that no relationship exists between cortisol and acute psychological state or physical symptoms of stress; however, the study was limited by its small sample size and several potentially confounding variables, making it difficult to draw any firm conclusions.

It is widely understood that qualities of the home environment greatly influence child health outcomes (Nancy, 1999; Simons et al., 2010). While there has been much research regarding the role of direct parenting behaviors, there remains little research regarding how other qualities of the parent, such as cultural values, may affect child physiological outcomes. Furthermore, research has also suggested that the way in which parenting and culture may be associated with child outcomes may differ based on race/ethnicity (Pinquart & Kauser, 2018). In this thesis, I examined the direct associations between parental cultural values (i.e., mainstream, traditional) and child diurnal cortisol outcomes as well as other qualities of parenting (parental warmth, authoritarianism) and child diurnal cortisol outcomes in Hispanic and White identifying primary caregivers. A moderating model was then used to investigate the racial/ethnic differences which may exist in these associations through mixed model regressions.

Participants were 475 twins and their primary caregivers (mean age=8.48; Primary caregivers: 64% White, 36% Hispanic; 53.8% middle class or above). I found no main effects between parental cultural values and child cortisol outcomes and no main effects between parenting behaviors and child cortisol outcomes. However, when exploring the moderating role of race/ethnicity, it was found that, as compared to children of White primary caregivers, children of Hispanic primary caregivers who had higher levels of parental authoritarianism had steeper PM slopes, indicating more adaptive cortisol outcomes. This suggests that the adaptiveness of certain parenting behaviors may differ across racial/ethnic groups such that what is considered to be “good parenting” may not translate across differing racial/ethnic groups. Ultimately, further research should be conducted in order to further explore the impact of race/ethnicity in the outcomes of our children.
