Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.
Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Sentiment analysis, which is a notably method in text mining, can be used to extract the sentiment from people’s opinion. It then provides us with valuable perception on a topic from the public’s attitude, which create more opportunities for deeper analysis and prediction.
The thesis aims to investigate public’s sentiment towards Bitcoin through analyzing 10 million Bitcoin related tweets and assigning sentiment points on tweets, then using sentiment fluctuation as a factor to predict future crypto fluctuation. Price prediction is achieved by using a machine learning model called Recurrent Neural Network which automatically learns the pattern and generate following results with memory. The analysis revels slight connection between sentiment and crypto currency and the Neural Network model showed a strong connection between sentiment score and future price prediction.
In an effort to address these trends, we founded a student organization, The Political Literates, to fight political apathy by delivering political news in an easy to understand and unbiased manner. Inspired by our experience with this organization, we combine our insights with research to paint a new perspective on the state of the American political system.
This thesis analyzes various issues identified through our observations and research, with a heavy emphasis on using examples from the 2016 election. Our focus is how new technologies like data analytics, the Internet, smartphones, and social media are changing politics by driving political and social transformation. We identify and analyze five core issues that have been amplified by new technology, hindering the effectiveness of elections and further increasing political polarization:
● Gerrymandering which skews partisan debate by forcing politicians to pander to ideologically skewed districts.
● Consolidation of media companies which affects the diversity of how news is shared.
● Repeal of the Fairness Doctrine which allowed media to become more partisan.
● The Citizens United Ruling which skews power away from average voters in elections.
● A Failing Education System which does not prepare Americans to be civically engaged and to avoid being swayed by biased or untrue media.
Based on our experiment with the Political Literates and our research, we call for improving how critical thinking and civics is taught in the American education system. Critical thought and civics must be developed pervasively. With this, more people would be able to form more sophisticated views by listening to others to learn rather than win, listening less to irrelevant information, and forming a culture with more engagement in politics. Through this re-enlightenment, many of America’s other problems may evaporate or become more actionable.
The inspiration of the book came from my personal upbringing. I was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, where I would see title loans businesses in every street corner. Many close family friends grew a dependency on these loans. As I grew older, I became aware of the long-term effects these businesses had on these families and I became inspired to make a change.
My book is meant to introduce simple financial terms into a child’s life with the hopes that they will begin to converse with family and friends about these terms. My book specifically incorporates the terms: loans, opportunity costs, savings, and affordability. These four topics were chosen through surveying a high school class by gathering information such as what they know, how much they know, and what they would like to learn more about. The intended audience would be students reading at a 3rd grade reading level. This grade level is ideal for my book based off information found on the Arizona Department of Education’s website. Final revisions were done with the help of my committee as well as through feedback received from children.
The book itself is 31 pages long with illustrations on every page. The illustrations consist of photographs and drawings. The drawings were purposely placed, roughly, and without color, on the photographs to symbolize the rough patches in life in yet a colorful world.
Proposition 1184 plays a major role in the future of my book. Proposition 1184 is
currently working its way through the Arizona legislature and would require all high school students to take a class on financial basics, replacing the current economics class requirement. I plan to continue working with Mesa Public Schools to get my book, or a similar project, incorporated into the Mesa Public Schools curriculum. I envision the book starting discussions related to financial topics which will in turn familiarize children with these terms’ definitions and begin the movement of financial education in Arizona.
When browsing on social media – particularly Instagram – users will see a slew of well-known celebrities featuring different brands, products, or services in their posts. Celebrity endorsements for advertising “dates back to the 1760s” (Vemuri & Madhav, 2004), so the concept has existed for a few centuries. Today, some examples of celebrity endorsements include LeBron James and Nike; Justin Bieber and Calvin Klein; Sofia Vergara and Head & Shoulders, etc. It has become almost an expectation to see celebrities in most advertisements - it seems as if utilizing exclusively commonplace models in advertising isn’t the standard norm for companies anymore. Commonplace models still have the ability to sell, but celebrities can take that selling ability to another level. As stated in an article published by Forbes, many celebrities have cult followings, so “when famous people are seen in advertisements promoting a new product, audiences are prompted to buy that product, either subliminally or directly” (Olenski 2016). Due to their widespread clout, using celebrities to market products can be quite effective in reaching consumers. For instance, if a consumer is scrolling on social media like Instagram and sees his or her favorite celebrity using a certain brand or product, this may influence that user to begin using that same brand or product as well. A person who likes a celebrity presumably holds a certain level of trust in that celebrity, and trusts his or her judgement when it comes to using a specific product or service. Companies can benefit from investing in celebrities to “[juxtapose] brands and organisations with endorser qualities such as attractiveness, likeability, and trustworthiness... they trust that these qualities will generate desirable campaign outcomes” (Vemuri & Madhav, 2004). Essentially, consumers will associate products with likable celebrities, and therein purchase them.
