Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Many researchers aspire to create robotics systems that assist humans in common office tasks, especially by taking over delivery and messaging tasks. For meaningful interactions to take place, a mobile robot must be able to identify the humans it interacts with and communicate successfully with them. It must also be able to successfully navigate the office environment. While mobile robots are well suited for navigating and interacting with elements inside a deterministic office environment, attempting to interact with human beings in an office environment remains a challenge due to the limits on the amount of cost-efficient compute power onboard the robot. In this work, I propose the use of remote cloud services to offload intensive interaction tasks. I detail the interactions required in an office environment and discuss the challenges faced when implementing a human-robot interaction platform in a stochastic office environment. I also experiment with cloud services for facial recognition, speech recognition, and environment navigation and discuss my results. As part of my thesis, I have implemented a human-robot interaction system utilizing cloud APIs into a mobile robot, enabling it to navigate the office environment, identify humans within the environment, and communicate with these humans.

Millions of people every day log onto their computers to play competitive games with others around the world. Each of these players has their own unique personality and their own reasons for playing. To explore the relationship between player personalities and gameplay, this study asked participants to report their Myers-Briggs

Millions of people every day log onto their computers to play competitive games with others around the world. Each of these players has their own unique personality and their own reasons for playing. To explore the relationship between player personalities and gameplay, this study asked participants to report their Myers-Briggs sixteen personality types and complete a survey that asked them questions about their behavior while games playing competitively online including their preferred in-game archetype and questions about how they interact with other players online. The survey also included the Grit Scale test, which which was intended to explore players' perseverance. Nearly 700 people participated in the study and all responses were analyzed based on their Myers-Briggs' personality type. While this study revealed that Myers-Briggs' personality type alone cannot determine a player's mindset while playing online, it was found to be an indicator of how they feel about socializing with others online. The implications of these results are discussed in this paper.

Lie detection is used prominently in contemporary society for many purposes such as for pre-employment screenings, granting security clearances, and determining if criminals or potential subjects may or may not be lying, but by no means is not limited to that scope. However, lie detection has been criticized for being subjective, unreliable, inaccurate, and susceptible to deliberate manipulation. Furthermore, critics also believe that the administrator of the test also influences the outcome as well. As a result, the polygraph machine, the contemporary device used for lie detection, has come under scrutiny when used as evidence in the courts. The purpose of this study is to use three entirely different tools and concepts to determine whether eye tracking systems, electroencephalogram (EEG), and Facial Expression Emotion Analysis (FACET) are reliable tools for lie detection. This study found that certain constructs such as where the left eye is looking at in regard to its usual position and engagement levels in eye tracking and EEG respectively could distinguish between truths and lies. However, the FACET proved the most reliable tool out of the three by providing not just one distinguishing variable but seven, all related to emotions derived from movements in the facial muscles during the present study. The emotions associated with the FACET that were documented to possess the ability to distinguish between truthful and lying responses were joy, anger, fear, confusion, and frustration. In addition, an overall measure of the subject's neutral and positive emotional expression were found to be distinctive factors. The implications of this study and future directions are discussed.

Global violent conflict has become an increasing problem in recent decades, especially in the African continent. Civil wars, terrorism, riots, and political violence has wrought havoc not only on civilian lives, but also on economic foundations. Trade networks are a way to measure these economic foundations. To summarize trade networks clustering coefficient as well as trade quantity/value summation measures are used. To understand effects of global trade on violent conflict, Pearson product-moment correlations are utilized. This work details a comparison of African national economies and violent conflict events using clustering coefficient, trade summation measures and Pearson correlation coefficient.

"The Reality of Imagination" is short animated film about a young girl name Isabel who, with her sketchbook and box of crayons, demonstrates the power of imagination through her drawings. From her own bedroom, her simple sketches transform into more complicated, realistic drawings, bringing her artistic creation to life. From a bouncing red ball, to flying on a plane, to a thunderstorm, her world extends beyond her sketchbook. The overall message is to demonstrate the importance of art and the power of imagination, especially seen from the perspective of a young child where much of that development is evident. In addition, further exploration of the film industry and learning about the production process was conducted to continue exercising my interest for film editing and graphic designing. This involved devising the script, selecting the appropriate actors, planning the production set, purchasing the tools and equipment, putting together a production crew, and applying the concepts learned about editing to create a short film that was approximately 3 minutes long. The editing software application used for this production was Final Cut Pro X distributed by Apple while the camera used was a Canon EOS Rebel T6. At least three different editing techniques were applied in the film and included stop-motion, keying, and split-screening. Furthermore, other concepts such as transforming and resizing video clips were applied along with learning to use the audio and visual effect resources available from Final Cut Pro X to enhance the quality of the film. An in-depth analysis of the entire process is also given in detailed.

This thesis project examines the likely factors that cause students to drop out of Barrett, the Honors College. Honors literature regarding retention and attrition suggests four areas encompassing individual student attributes and honors program characteristics which may impact a student's decision to stay or leave an Honors College. The primary question in focus is, "Why do students leave the Honors College?" followed by the tertiary questions of, "what can be done to mitigate this occurrence?" and, "how does this affect the quality of an honors education?" Assessing attrition can be broken down into biographical, cognitive-behavioral, socio-environmental, and institutional-instrumental components. Students who graduated with honors and those who did not graduate with honors were assessed on these four components through survey methods and qualitative interviews to investigate specific reasons why students leave the honors program. The results indicated a wide array of reasons impacting student attrition, the most significant being negative perceptions towards (1) honors courses and contracts, (2) difficulty completing a thesis project, and (3) finding little to no value in "graduating with honors." Each of these reasons reflect the institutional-instrumental component of student attrition, making it the most salient group of reasons why students leave the Honors College. The socio-environmental component also influences student attrition through peer influence and academic advisor support, though this was found to be within the context of institutional-instrumental means. This project offers solutions to ameliorate each of the four components of attrition by offering standardized honors contracts and more mandatory honors classes, mandatory thesis preparatory courses instead of workshops, and emphasizing the benefit Barrett gives to students as a whole. These solutions aim at increasing graduation rates for future honors students at Barrett as well as improving the overall quality of an honors education.

As mobile devices have risen to prominence over the last decade, their importance has been increasingly recognized. Workloads for mobile devices are often very different from those on desktop and server computers, and solutions that worked in the past are not always the best fit for the resource- and energy-constrained computing that characterizes mobile devices. While this is most commonly seen in CPU and graphics workloads, this device class difference extends to I/O as well. However, while a few tools exist to help analyze mobile storage solutions, there exists a gap in the available software that prevents quality analysis of certain research initiatives, such as I/O deduplication on mobile devices. This honors thesis will demonstrate a new tool that is capable of capturing I/O on the filesystem layer of mobile devices running the Android operating system, in support of new mobile storage research. Uniquely, it is able to capture both metadata of writes as well as the actual written data, transparently to the apps running on the devices. Based on a modification of the strace program, fstrace and its companion tool fstrace-replay can record and replay filesystem I/O of actual Android apps. Using this new tracing tool, several traces from popular Android apps such as Facebook and Twitter were collected and analyzed.

tool also parses in Silo data files to allow the visualization
of scientific models like the Annular Core Research Reactor.
This project is useful for both education and visualization. This
project will be used by scientists to visualize and understand
their simulation results, and used as a museum exhibit to engage
the next generation of scientists in computer modeling.

Undergraduate on-campus residential education is a topic of significant inquiry within the field of higher education, and specifically student affairs. It has become commonplace for institutions of higher education in the United States to leverage the intersections between academics and residence life in order to promote student success by offering on-campus housing options that strategically place students in residential communities that provide additional connection to the students' academic experience, often by major, college, department, or other focus areas. Such models vary by institution, but are often referred to as living-learning communities or residential colleges, depending upon their structure and goals. For example, Barrett, the Honors College on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University implements a residential college model within its student housing; honors students live and study together, with the addition of three "special communities" designed for students majoring in Engineering, Business, or the Arts. This honors thesis case study describes and investigates the impact the visual and performing arts Barrett residential community has upon its residents in their first-year college experience. Through the lens of student development theory, this research focuses upon examining this specific residential community in detail in order to gain an understanding of its effect upon residents' academic and personal well being.

To prevent unnecessary killings and to encourage people to be safe around venomous snakes, a proper identification is important. This work seeks to preserve wild native Arizona snakes and promote a general interest

Uninformed people frequently kill snakes without knowing whether they are venomous or harmless, fearing for their safety. To prevent unnecessary killings and to encourage people to be safe around venomous snakes, a proper identification is important. This work seeks to preserve wild native Arizona snakes and promote a general interest in them by using a bag of features approach for classifying native Arizona snakes in images as venomous or non-venomous. The image category classifier was implemented in MATLAB and trained on a set of 245 images of native Arizona snakes (171 non-venomous, 74 venomous). To test this approach, 10-fold cross-validation was performed and the average accuracy was 0.7772. While this approach is functional, the results could be improved, ideally with a higher average accuracy, in order to be reliable. In false positives, the features may have been associated with the color or pattern, which is similar between venomous and non-venomous snakes due to mimicry. Polymorphic traits, color morphs, variation, and juveniles that may exhibit different colors can cause false negatives and misclassification. Future work involves pre-training image processing such as improving the brightness and contrast or converting to grayscale, interactively specifying or generating regions of interest for feature detection, and targeting reducing the false negative rate and improve the true positive rate. Further study is needed with a larger and balanced image set to evaluate its performance. This work may potentially serve as a tool for herpetologists to assist in their field research and to classify large image sets.
