Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

This report attempts to understand the effects of the many aspects that pertain to a woman’s path into the construction industry and their role in limiting women’s overall representation in the construction industry. More specifically, it aims to understand how upbringing, background, and culture impact women that do pursue careers in the construction industry. This paper presents some of the current and prominent issues being faced by women in in the construction industry, including those in the trades. These issues then contribute to their lack of representation and forceful exit. Additionally, it assesses personal narratives from a localized group of women who are currently employed at a large construction company. This information and these narratives are analyzed jointly to try and gain a better understanding of the current challenges being faced by women in comparison to those reported previously. This joint comparison allows for a deeper understanding of women’s perception of the construction industry as a whole.

College students have an increased need for mental health assistance. Poor mental health affects a student’s social and academic success. To combat this, higher education institutes should assist students with the negotiation of constraints to visiting the U.S. National Parks. This study investigated the current barriers to visitation of the

College students have an increased need for mental health assistance. Poor mental health affects a student’s social and academic success. To combat this, higher education institutes should assist students with the negotiation of constraints to visiting the U.S. National Parks. This study investigated the current barriers to visitation of the U.S. National Parks faced by college students. Additionally, it identified potential resources that could be provided to improve their negotiation strategies. Undergraduate students at Arizona State University (n=99) were asked to participate in a survey to identify current visitation rates, constraints, and demographics. Students in two Arizona State University classes were also asked to participate in a focus group. A total of four focus groups were conducted to determine the potential resources needed in higher education to assist students with the negotiation of constraints. Based on the quantitative and qualitative data, two themes emerged to determine current barriers: prioritization of U.S. National Parks and networking. Two additional themes emerged to identify potential resources for negotiation: planning and perception of time. After an integration of the quantitative and qualitative data, it was determined that cost is an assumed barrier, negative attitudes toward outdoor recreation affect participants’ leisure preferences, and there is a perception of a lack of time. Finally, two significant recommendations are proposed. First is the regularly available communication of knowledge produced by higher education institutions. Second, implementation of planned trips conducted by higher education institutes will help students negotiate barriers to visiting the U.S. National Parks.

When the Covid-19 virus began to spread worldwide in the spring of 2020, life across the globe changed rapidly. Government restrictions required people to move into prolonged social isolation and the resulting impact of this isolation on mental health has been profound (Brooks et al., 2020). Initial research has begun to be conducted to understand the scope of how social isolation and the pandemic have influenced people’s psychological well-being. Thus far there has been a marked increase in depression and anxiety disorders (Eyice Karabacak et al., 2021). Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by fear and avoidance of certain settings. Undoubtedly, fear and avoidance of certain settings during the pandemic cannot be considered abnormal behavior as it is in line with a normative response to such a threatening phenomenon. This study investigates how normative avoidance of certain settings during the pandemic may have now evolved into fear of the settings themselves. In particular, it tested if the start of the pandemic is associated with the prevalence rate of Agoraphobia. This was done via a retrospective study that uses self-report data to examine whether participants presented symptoms of Agoraphobia prior to the start of the pandemic and if they currently exhibit symptoms of Agoraphobia. In addition to the study, the website designed to host this study also provided mental health resources to participants, in light of the documented increase in mental illness since the start of the pandemic (Brooks et al., 2020).

On March 24th, 2018, over a million people from across the United States and around the world came together for the single largest single day of protest against gun violence in history. The protest, called the March For Our Lives, was a student-organized response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman

On March 24th, 2018, over a million people from across the United States and around the world came together for the single largest single day of protest against gun violence in history. The protest, called the March For Our Lives, was a student-organized response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead and another 17 people critically injured. While there is significant documentation of the historic 2018 March For Our Lives protest, there is scarcely any documentation about the stories of young organizers that have been working to promote gun violence prevention in their communities since then. This project utilizes oral histories from two March For Our Lives organizers to expand the available historical documentation about the March For Our Lives, investigate the tactics and motivations of young gun violence prevention organizers, and highlight the stories of diverse movement leaders.
