Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

University College Groningen, in the Netherlands, is one of two Barrett Exchange programs. These programs allow for Barrett students to receive honors credit for their classes while studying abroad. While these programs are intriguing, there are no resources on the Barrett website that provide student accounts of the experiences. For

University College Groningen, in the Netherlands, is one of two Barrett Exchange programs. These programs allow for Barrett students to receive honors credit for their classes while studying abroad. While these programs are intriguing, there are no resources on the Barrett website that provide student accounts of the experiences. For the UCG exchange, there was only a link to the UCG website which was not extremely helpful for getting an understanding of what you will truly be getting yourself into while abroad. The solution that was decided upon was to create a vlog website for Barrett students to use as a resource when looking into the program. The site contains both person experiences from students, as well has helpful tips and tricks of how to maneuver your stay in the Netherlands. Overall, there were 8 videos created and 9 posts that can be used as resources for future Barrett students. The ‘Who are We?’, ‘Why a Barrett Exchange?’, ‘First Impressions and Adjusting to the Dutch Lifestyle’, and ‘Welcome Weeks’ posts contain testimony from two other Barrett students and myself who went on the exchange during the Fall, 2018 semester. The ‘Vistmarkt’ and ‘UCG Tour’ posts contain videos that show students places they will be able to venture to in the Netherlands. The ‘Travels Tips’ and ‘UCG Curriculum’ posts contain videos that have numerous tips for students who choose this exchange as their study abroad program they wish to participate in. The final post is called ‘Next Steps’ and it is meant for future students who wish to update and extend the knowledge that is presents on the website so that students can get the most up-to-date information. This website was created to give Barrett students a better understanding of the life-changing experience they are about to embark on.

She enrolled in

As a student at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Barrett, The Honors College, as well as a lover of travel, Brielle Ashford decided to combine her passions and spent four months abroad in Spring, 2019, creating a senior thesis in digital international journalism. She enrolled in the Center for Intercultural Educational Exchange's Open Campus program for a semester and spent a month and a half each in three countries. Starting in Cape Town, South Africa, she interviewed locals about their lives post-Apartheid. In Paris, France, Brielle found a story in a non-profit that teaches French youth about religious diversity. Lastly in Rome, Italy, she covered the famous, vibrant food culture of gelato at the city’s oldest gelateria. It was the experience of a lifetime and the stories stand on their own... and she made it all happen with little more than the Adobe editing suite and an iPhone X.

This research examines the impact of social media influencers on Millennial and Gen Z consumers’ vacation decisions. It reveals why and under what conditions influencers’ posts may trigger young adult consumers’ desire to vacation in the same destination. In a pre-test and one experiment, I demonstrate that seeing a post that is perceived by followers as credible increases influencers’ likeability and therefore leads to higher likelihood to vacation in the same place. However, seeing a post about a similar influencer, such as a student who is an influencer from the same university, decrease influencers’ likeability and leads to a decrease in young adults’ likelihood to vacation in the same place. Moreover, similarity and credibility do not have an interaction effect, which is that when seeing a post by a similar influencer, credibility will not have a stronger effect on young adults’ likelihood to vacation in the same destination.

Every year hundreds of people are trading in their cubicle to experience the freedom of an open road in a van home. The van life movement is growing rapidly as people seek more sustainable, adventurous, and financially effective ways of life. Many van lifers pursue the luxury of time over

Every year hundreds of people are trading in their cubicle to experience the freedom of an open road in a van home. The van life movement is growing rapidly as people seek more sustainable, adventurous, and financially effective ways of life. Many van lifers pursue the luxury of time over the luxury of money. Others fund their journey by working remote jobs from the comfort of their van home while parked next to their favorite waterfall. These camper vans are unique in their minimalist, interior designs as well as their energy efficient systems. This project encompassed the design of an off-grid camper van while following set guidelines of only using clean energy sources for power and including low weight items within the van. My design is showcased with a SolidWorks model and is equipped with a solar panel awning, a rainwater collection system, and a full bathroom with a solar shower. The design includes a general wiring diagram and recommendations for all materials and features to incorporate in the build. In addition, a downloadable bill of materials and website were created to show how this nomadic lifestyle can be achieved by those eager to travel and meet new people. As I begin my own van build and embark on my journey, this website will be updated to share my findings and connect with the larger community currently involved in their own venture or curious about starting their own build. The greatest moments in life will be outside your comfort zone so choose to take that step and embrace the experience.

This thesis creative project shares a food and travel blog through a published website that follows my friends and I while we travel through North America reviewing foods that are found in certain areas. This internet blog outlines local cuisines and what makes them unique to certain locations.
Through my personal travels and peer interviews, I have found that this project gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge on different cultures and regions of the North America and explore how local foods contribute to the cultures in that setting. Additionally, this thesis helped me self-teach myself how to develop a fully published website and practice my web design skills.
