Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

The Oasis app is a self-appraisal tool for potential or current problem gamblers to take control of their habits by providing periodic check-in notifications during a gambling session and allowing users to see their progress over time. Oasis is backed by substantial background research surrounding addiction intervention methods, especially in the field of self-appraisal messaging, and applies this messaging in a familiar mobile notification form that can effectively change user’s behavior. User feedback was collected and used to improve the app, and the results show a promising tool that could help those who need it in the future.

91% of smartphone and tablet users experience a problem with their device screen being oriented the wrong way during use [11]. In [11], the authors proposed iRotate, a previous solution which uses computer vision to solve the orientation problem. We propose iLieDown, an improved method of automatically rotating smartphones, tablets, and other device displays. This paper introduces a new algorithm to correctly orient the display relative to the user’s face using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN model is trained to predict the rotation of faces in various environments through data augmentation, uses a confidence threshold, and analyzes multiple images to be accurate and robust. iLieDown is battery and CPU efficient, causes no noticeable lag to the user during use, and is 6x more accurate than iRotate.

There is a dramatic lack of quality resources for navigating the Arizona State University campus. These resources are particularly lacking for mobile devices, as many ASU buildings and paths are not found on typical navigation apps. As a result, the only comprehensive resource for the Tempe campus is the school’s “Interactive Map”. The website is poorly optimized for mobile, to the extent of being unusable. As a result, this project sets out to create a navigation app for iOS devices, specifically targeting the ASU Tempe campus and students attempting to traverse it. This app will thus make navigating the Tempe campus much more accessible and convenient for anyone.

In 2020, all states and territories within the United States have at least 20% obesity rates among adults, with the state of Arizona specifically being between 30-35% of adults (CDC, 2021). Being overweight and having obesity are linked to increased risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, certain cancers, as well as other chronic conditions (NIH, 2018). The high percentage is partly due to the work environment in society, which has become increasingly sedentary with the rise of labor-saving technologies, like computers for example. As a result, sedentary jobs have increased 83% since 1950 (American Heart Association, 2018). Our proposed solution to this problem of people not getting enough exercise is Bet Fitness. Bet Fitness is a mobile app that utilizes social and financial incentives to motivate users to consistently exercise. The quintessence of Bet Fitness is to bet money on your health. You first create a group with your friends or people you want to compete with. You then put in a specified amount of money into the betting pool. Users then have to exercise for a specified amount of days for a certain period of time (let’s say for instance, three times a week for a month). Workouts can be verified only by the other members of the group, where you can either send photos in a group chat, link your fitbit/other health data, or simply have another person vouch that you worked out as proof. Anyone who fails to keep up with the bet, loses their money that they put in and it gets equally distributed to the other members of the party. According to our initial survey, this idea has generated much interest among college students.
