Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Low-level optimization is the process of handwriting key parts of applications in assembly code that is better than what can be generated from a higher-level language. In performance-intensive applications, this is key to ensuring efficient code. This is generally something that is taught in on the job training, but knowledge of it improves college student’s skill sets and makes them more desirable employees I have created material for a course teaching this low-level optimization with assembly code. I specifically focus on the x86 architecture, as this is one of the most prolific computer architectures. The course contains a series of lecture videos, live coding videos, and structured programming assignments to support the learning objectives. This material is presented in an entirely autonomous way, which serves as remote learning material and can be easily added as supplemental material to an existing course.

In this creative project, I created arrangements for string quartet of two very common pop songs that are frequently requested at wedding gigs, "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran and "Purpose" by Justin Bieber. However, to meet the demands of the dynamic gigging environment and context for string musicians, I created string quartet arrangements that could be adapted and condensed into string trio or duo by eliminating one or two parts from the full quartet arrangement. As such, this project not only shares the adaptable arrangements I created, but also shares the tips and tricks I gathered throughout the course of the project, both from engaging in the creative aspect of the arranging process and also through my own personal experience.

Artistic expression can be made more accessible through the use of technological interfaces such as auditory analysis, generative artificial intelligence models, and simplification of complicated systems, providing a way for human driven creativity to serve as an input that allow users to creatively express themselves. Studies and testing were done with industry standard performance technology and protocols to create an accessible interface for creative expression. Artificial intelligence models were created to generate art based on simple text inputs. Users were then invited to display their creativity using the software, and a comprehensive performance showcased the potential of the system for artistic expression.

A zombie wanders around towards an unknown destination and interacts with the world around her. All the while, the voice of the late Dr. Lauren Maldonado's essays plays overhead, completely unaware to the corpse's behavior. The essays, explorations of zombies' roles in media, are revealed to have been written by

A zombie wanders around towards an unknown destination and interacts with the world around her. All the while, the voice of the late Dr. Lauren Maldonado's essays plays overhead, completely unaware to the corpse's behavior. The essays, explorations of zombies' roles in media, are revealed to have been written by that zombie before she was turned. Dr. Maldonado's body eventually stumbles into her old self’s office. Here, she begins to eat the papers she finds on the desk. The Zombie as the Undefinable Monster is a non-fiction analysis on the zombie metaphor in media paired with a fictional narrative. For each scene, there is a short analytical essay to match. In conjunction, the five scenes with the five essays explore the relationship between zombies and identity. Within the narrative, those five essays are written by the deceased character Dr. Lauren Maldonado. Her zombified body serves as the main character of the story. Preceding the storyboards and the essays, there is an appendix written outside of the narrative containing two additional essays. The first is an artist statement detailing my creative and thinking process. The second is a written explanation of the zombie mechanics within the narrative.

But are there, really? 1,616 species of fish are on the brink of extinction; 989 are endangered and another 627 are critically endangered. Habitat loss and pollution are significant factors in the decline of these species, however, overfishing is spearheading extinction rates. It’s time to reel in reality on one of the biggest threats to our seas inhabitants. The gutting truth is, if they die, we die.

Water scarcity has become an especially urgent problem in Maasailand. Maasailand is one of the major worldwide destinations for wildlife game drives in Africa. In this project, a recyclable car wash system is considered for design in Maasailand, Kenya. Background research was conducted to see the feasibility of the design.

Water scarcity has become an especially urgent problem in Maasailand. Maasailand is one of the major worldwide destinations for wildlife game drives in Africa. In this project, a recyclable car wash system is considered for design in Maasailand, Kenya. Background research was conducted to see the feasibility of the design. Water filtration methods such as coagulation were researched, analyzed and tested to ensure all the customer needs were met. The washing and collection aspects of the car wash were also further explored and designed. This joint project which is part of capstone is to also be implemented into the bigger project known as the Maasai Autotmotive Education Center and in support of the Mara Guide Association (MGA), an organization run by the Masaai people in Kenya.
