Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Description

The current clinical gold standards for tissue sealing include sutures, staples, and glues, however several adverse effects limit their use. Sutures and staples inherently cause additional trauma to tissue surrounding the wound, and glues can be lacking in adhesion and are potentially inflammatory. All three also introduce risk of infection.

The current clinical gold standards for tissue sealing include sutures, staples, and glues, however several adverse effects limit their use. Sutures and staples inherently cause additional trauma to tissue surrounding the wound, and glues can be lacking in adhesion and are potentially inflammatory. All three also introduce risk of infection. Light-activated tissue sealing, particularly the use of near-infrared light, is an attractive alternative, as it localizes heat, thereby preventing thermal damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. Previous work identified a glutaraldehyde-crosslinked chitosan film as a lead sealant for gastrointestinal incision sealing, but in vivo testing resulted in tissue degradation in and around the wound. The suggested causes for this degradation were excess acetic acid, endotoxins in the chitosan, and thermal damage. A basic buffer wash protocol was developed to remove excess acid from the films following fabrication. UV-Vis spectroscopy demonstrated that following the wash, films had the same concentration of Indocyanine green as unwashed films, allowing them to absorb light at the same wavelength, therefore showing the wash did not affect the film’s function. However subsequent washes led to degradation of film mass of nearly 20%. Standard chitosan films had significantly greater mass gain (p = 0.028) and significantly less subsequent loss (p= 0.012) than endotoxin free chitosan-films after soaking in phosphate buffered saline for varying durations , while soaking duration had no effect (p = 0.332). Leak pressure testing of films prepared with varying numbers of buffer washes, laser temperature, and lasering time revealed no significant interaction between any of the 3 variables. As such, it was confirmed that proceeding with in vivo testing with the buffer wash, various lasering temperatures, and laser times would not affect the sealing performance of the films. Future investigation will involve characterization of additional materials that may be effective for sealing of internal wounds, as well as drug loading of agents that may hasten the healing process.

In India, Bollywood simultaneously interacts with religious and gender identity by producing many movies on Hindu-Muslim inter-religious romantic relationships in the twenty-first century. Bollywood’s Hindu-Muslim romance movies are stories with a central focus on a romantic relationship in which one lover is Hindu and the second is Muslim. The masculinity and femininity of the Hindu and Muslim characters are not accidental; it is meticulously articulated in every movie. This thesis explores two sets of patterns in the movies: themes in love stories and gender identity across the protagonists. It is important to note that representation of religious identity in Bollywood is highly debated with a special emphasis on Muslim identity since they are a religious minority and the political "Other". This thesis acknowledges that the presence of Muslims in Bollywood is complicated and not black and white, but it focuses on the representation of Muslims that is connected romantically with Hindus.

This paper addresses the subjective experiences and personal stories of sex workers in the United States. To address this topic, I first discuss the organization and structure of this type of work and then discuss how it is related to gender norms, a culture of moral panic, and institutionalized sexism.

This paper addresses the subjective experiences and personal stories of sex workers in the United States. To address this topic, I first discuss the organization and structure of this type of work and then discuss how it is related to gender norms, a culture of moral panic, and institutionalized sexism. All of this discussion is framed using feminist debates about the possible exploitative/liberatory aspects of sex work. After establishing the broader arguments, I transition into an analysis of qualitative studies that include sex workers’ own narratives about how they experience power, consent, and exploitation in the context of their work and their lives.

This underrepresentation impacts future medical care, where these patients are dying as a result of this underdeveloped material.

Breast cancer can be imaged at greater depths using photoacoustic imaging to differentiate between cancerous and non-cancerous tissue. Current photoacoustic modalities struggle to display images in real-time because of the required image reconstruction. In this work, we aim to create a real-time photoacoustic imaging system where the photoacoustic effect is detected through changes in index of refraction. To reach this aim, two methods are applied to visualize the acoustic waves including Schlieren optics and differential interference contrast microscopy. This combined approach provides a new tool for the widespread application in clinical settings.

This thesis examines the representation of female Korean pop stars in music videos, specifically looking into how these music videos serve as a medium for communicating gender ideals. I examine K-Pop's damaging presentations of women and the multilayered ways that such representations shape the “ideal” woman, societal expectations, societal treatment, and its consequences. South Korea, as a country of total media saturation and high technological advancement, leaves individuals surrounded with various ways to “learn” gender and properly enact it in their daily life. This builds and reinforces gender constructs on systemic and personal levels. K-Pop is unique in its strict organizational structure and emphasis on conformity, and both of those aspects lend to an even more intense and streamlined depiction of what a South Korean woman is meant to be. The music video is an ideal cultural artifact to examine due to the overlapping audio and visual elements, including lyrics, choreography, makeup, and outfits.

From previous research, it has been observed that neural summation can be observed from reaction time tasks. This is observed through race models, as proposed by J.O. Miller. These models are referred to as “race models” as different stimuli “race” to extract a response during tasks. The race model is augmented by the Race Model Inequality, which claims the probability that two simultaneous signals will have a faster reaction time than the summation of the probabilities of two individual signals. When this inequality expression is violated, it indicates neural summation is occurring. In another study, researchers studied how the location of visual stimuli influences neural summation with tactile information, observing the visual stimuli from different distances and a mirrored reflection condition. However, results of the mirror condition did not follow the other visual conditions, offering unique properties. The mirrored case is examined more closely in this project, attempting to answer if the presence of a mirrored representation of the hand will affect reaction time during timed tasks, suggesting the occurrence of neural summation, and suggesting that a mirrored reflection of self is interpreted as an independent channel of information. This was measured by evaluating participants’ response time while manipulating the presence of a reflection and checking if they violate the race model. However, the results of this study indicated that the presence of a mirror does not have an effect in reaction time and therefore did not present the occurrence of neural summation

Using a dataset of ASU students from the 2016-2017 cohort, we interact gender and parent education level to observe gaps in academic achievement. We see a statistically insignificant achievement gap for males across parent education level, but a statistically significant achievement gap for females across parent education level. We also observe dropout gaps among these interaction groups. We see the widest dropout gap being between males across parent education level, with the smallest dropout gap being between females across parent education level. So with males we see an insignificant achievement gap but the widest dropout gap across parent education level, and with females we see a significant achievement gap but the smallest dropout gap across parent education level. What is driving these gaps and causing more similarly performing students to drop out at wider rates? At the aggregate level, we see larger gaps in grade- associated dropout probability across parent education level for males which may be able to explain the larger difference in overall proportions of dropouts between males. However, when predicting dropout probability of the semester with the most first generation and non-first generation dropouts, we see that females have the largest differences across parent education level in grade-associated dropout probability. This suggests that our model may be best suited in using college achievement data to predict overall dropout probabilities, not next-semester dropout probabilities using current semester data. Our findings also suggest that first generation students’ dropout probability is more sensitive to the grades they receive than non-first generation students.

An exploratory research study conducted to determine the comparing and contrasting views and understandings of masculinity between young adults. Specifically those who identify as Christian compared to those who do not identify as Christian. A survey study was distributed through ASU courses and through social media leading to the results discussing the varying opinions on how masculinity is defined by Religion, Mass Media, and Education. Relationships and comparisons between Christian participants displayed the importance of traditional masculine values, whereas non-Christian participants seemed to have a more open and inclusive understanding of masculinity. Due to this being an exploratory study, much future research is necessary in order to fully expand on the complexities of Christianity, masculinity, and society’s overall understanding of the two.

Mounting evidence suggests that gender biases favoring men and racial biases favoring whites and Asians contribute to the underrepresentation of women and underrepresented minorities (URM) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Systemic issues caused by gender and racial biases create barriers that prevent women and URM from entering STEM from the structure of education to admission or promotions to higher-level positions. One of these barriers is unconscious biases that impact the quality of letters of recommendation for women and URM and their success in application processes to higher education. Though letters of recommendation provide a qualitative aspect to an application and can reveal the typical performance of the applicant, research has found that the unstructured nature of the traditional recommendation letter allows for gender and racial bias to impact the quality of letters of recommendation. Standardized letters of recommendation have been implemented in various fields and have been found to reduce the presence of bias in recommendation letters. This paper reviews the trends seen across the literature regarding equity in the use of letters of recommendation for undergraduates.
