Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Pathway analysis helps researchers gain insight into the biology behind gene expression-based data. By applying this data to known biological pathways, we can learn about mutations or other changes in cellular function, such as those seen in cancer. There are many tools that can be used to analyze pathways; however, it can be difficult to find and learn about the which tool is optimal for use in a certain experiment. This thesis aims to comprehensively review four tools, Cytoscape, PaxtoolsR, PathOlogist, and Reactome, and their role in pathway analysis. This is done by applying a known microarray data set to each tool and testing their different functions. The functions of these programs will then be analyzed to determine their roles in learning about biology and assisting new researchers with their experiments. It was found that each tools holds a very unique and important role in pathway analysis. Visualization pathways have the role of exploring individual pathways and interpreting genomic results. Quantification pathways use statistical tests to determine pathway significance. Together one can find pathways of interest and then explore areas of interest.

This thesis project was conducted to create a practical tool to help micro and small local food enterprises identify potential strategies and sources of finance. Currently, many of these enterprises are unable to obtain the financial capital needed to start-up or maintain operations.

Sources and strategies of finance studied and ultimately included in the tool were Loans, Equity, Membership, Crowdfunding, and Grants. The tool designed was a matrix that takes into account various criteria of the business (e.g. business lifecycle, organizational structure, business performance) and generates a financial plan based on these criteria and how they align with the selected business strategies. After strategies are found, stakeholders can search through an institutional database created in conjunction with the matrix tool to find possible institutional providers of financing that relate to the strategy or strategies found.

The tool has shown promise in identifying sources of finance for micro and small local food enterprises in practical use with hypothetical business cases, however further practical use is necessary to provide further input and revise the tool as needed. Ultimately, the tool will likely become fully user-friendly and stakeholders will not need the assistance of another expert helping them to use it. Finally, despite the promise of the tool itself, the fundamental and underlying problem that many of these businesses face (lack of infrastructure and knowledge) still exists, and while this tool can also help capacity-building efforts towards both those seeking and those providing finance, an institutional attitude adjustment towards social and alternative enterprises is necessary in order to further simplify the process of obtaining finance.

A major challenge with tissue samples used for biopsies is the inability to monitor their molecular quality before diagnostic testing. When tissue is resected from a patient, the cells are removed from their blood supply and normal temperature-controlled environment, which causes significant biological stress. As a result, the molecular composition and integrity undergo significant change. Currently, there is no method to track the effects of these artefactual stresses on the sample tissue to determine any deviations from the actual patient physiology. Without a way to track these changes, pathologists have to blindly trust that the tissue samples they are given are of high quality and fit for molecular analysis; physicians use the analysis to make diagnoses and treatment plans based on the assumption that the samples are valid. A possible way to track the quality of the tissue is by measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from the samples. VOCs are carbon-based chemicals with high vapor pressure at room temperature. There are over 1,800 known VOCs within humans and a number of these exist in every tissue sample. They are individualized and often indicative of a person’s metabolic condition. For this reason, VOCs are often used for diagnostic purposes. Their usefulness in diagnostics, reflectiveness of a person’s metabolic state, and accessibility lends them to being beneficial for tracking degradation. We hypothesize that there is a relationship between the change in concentration of the volatile organic compounds of a sample, and the molecular quality of a sample. This relationship is what would indicate the accuracy of the tissue quality used for a biopsy in relation to the tissue within the body.

Women’s financial literacy and its translation into financial capability is becoming a pressing issue as women are living longer than men, while experiencing shorter employment periods, and lower incomes and benefits (Weir & Willis, 2000). More alarming is the lack of access to credible and trustworthy educational resources for women.

Women’s financial literacy and its translation into financial capability is becoming a pressing issue as women are living longer than men, while experiencing shorter employment periods, and lower incomes and benefits (Weir & Willis, 2000). More alarming is the lack of access to credible and trustworthy educational resources for women. Through a detailed analysis of the players in the women’s financial wellness sphere, many resource gaps were found to be present. Across prominent platforms, these issues were found (1) content was incorrectly conveyed to viewers, (2) presentation of the information was complex and/or confusing, and (3) the content was not visually appealing nor engaging.

In an environment of increasing connectivity due to the advent of 3G and 4G networks, and the increase in the number of users subscribing to social media platforms, it is an opportune time to utilize social media as an educational platform. With that being said, the goal of this project, the Sisterhood of Money (SOM), is to inform and educate women about essential financial topics. Using a variety of social media platforms such as Instagram, SOM intends to educate viewers with the help of aesthetically pleasing content that is engaging, informative, and easily digestible.

Trichoplax adhaerens (Placozoa) is the simplest multicellular animal to be described. Trichoplax adhaerens (Placozoa) is the simplest multicellular animal to be described. This organism lacks nervous tissue, muscle tissue and organs, and is composed of only five cell types organized into three layers. Placozoa are gaining popularity as a model organism due to their simple make-up and completely sequenced genome. The complete sequencing of this organism’s genome has revealed the presence of important genes in cancer such as TP53 and MDM2 genes. Along with the presence of these genes, there are also additional pathways commonly deregulated in cancer that are well conserved in this organism. T. adhaerens are able to survive exposure to 160Gy and even 240Gy of X-ray radiation. Though small dark bodies form within the main body, they tend to extrude those masses, and continue to reproduce afterwards. After exposure to both grades of radiation, there was a greater increase in the apparent population size of the treated population than the control population. There was also a greater decrease in surface area of the organisms exposed to 160Gy than the control organisms. This increase in population and decrease in surface area of the treated organisms could be due to the extruded bodies. We hypothesize that the observed extrusion is a novel cancer defense mechanism for ridding the animal of damaged or mutated cells. This hypothesis should be tested through longitudinal observation and genetic analysis of the extruded bodies.

With cancer rates increasing and affecting more people every year, I felt it was important to educate the younger generation about the potential factors that could put them at risk of receiving a cancer diagnosis later in life. I thought that this was important to do because most students, especially

With cancer rates increasing and affecting more people every year, I felt it was important to educate the younger generation about the potential factors that could put them at risk of receiving a cancer diagnosis later in life. I thought that this was important to do because most students, especially in rural communities, are not taught the factors that increase your risk of getting cancer in the future. This leads to students not having the tools to think about the repercussions that their actions can have in their distant future in regard to their risk of getting cancer. I went to six schools throughout the valley and the White Mountains of Arizona with differing education levels and demographics to provide them with prevention strategies that they could implement into their daily lives to reduce their risk of getting cancer in the future. Some of the schools had curriculums that included cancer and some of the factors that increase your risk, while others never mention what is happening biologically when a person has cancer. I introduced factors such as no smoking or tobacco use, diet, exercise, sunscreen use, avoiding alcohol, and getting screened regularly. While at each school, I discussed the importance of creating these healthy habits while they are young because cancer is a disease that comes from the accumulation of mutations that can begin occurring in their bodies even now. After my presentation, 98.6% of the 305 students who viewed my presentation felt like they had learned something from the presentation and were almost all willing to implement at least one of the changes into their daily lives.

Every year, major companies buy Super Bowl advertisements (‘ads’) to fuel growth through the creation of brand awareness among a large, diverse audience. Although measuring the effectiveness of these marketing tactics is difficult, evaluating the abnormal returns (‘alpha’) of company stocks in the five days following the Super Bowl is effective because it provides insight into how actual returns compare to expected returns (calculated using data from the preceding 250 days). Analysis of a comprehensive sample, which includes all Super Bowl ads for public companies between the years 2015 and 2019, accurately demonstrates the relationship between these returns, illustrating the effectiveness of this type of marketing. To account for variation resulting from different inputs in different financial models, it is important to evaluate alpha based on several, reputable models of expected return to best capture the result. In this study, alpha will be analyzed using the Capital Asset Pricing Model (‘CAPM’) and the Fama and French 3 and 5 factor models. Although the ideology that increased marketing improves stock returns through brand awareness suggests a positive alpha, these models all indicate a statistically significant negative alpha for large, public companies who bought Super Bowl ads over the past five years. Therefore, actual returns, on average, are lower than projected returns for the evaluated five-day window following the Super Bowl. In examining alpha and statistical significance according to these financial models, this thesis will explore different market factors that may explain this counterintuitive result, primarily focusing on the investors’ opinions about this type of marketing. Therefore, in researching various discrepancies contributing to the negative alpha result, this study will accurately assess the effectiveness of Super Bowl advertising in terms of stock performance.

Using patient data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) we sought to identify mutations, regulators, and immune factors driving immune cell migration. We explored computational methods to define regulatory causal flows in order to make biological predictions. These predictions were verified by cross-referencing peer-reviewed articles. A disease-relevant inference model was developed to examine the chemokine IL-18’s effect on natural killer cell (NK cell) migration.

A cancer diagnosis is a life altering event that effects the ill child, the family, and more specifically sibling(s) if applicable. Over the past decade research on siblings of children

The purpose of this research project is to explore the healthy sibling’s response to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. A cancer diagnosis is a life altering event that effects the ill child, the family, and more specifically sibling(s) if applicable. Over the past decade research on siblings of children with cancer has steadily increased and called for implementing the population into the pediatric oncology plan of care. A systematic literature review containing both qualitative and quantitative data was conducted in order to uncover common themes presented in existing sibling research that influence the sibling experience. A literature search was conducted utilizing EBSCOhost, SAGE journals, and CINAHL. Inclusion criteria used included English, full text, scholarly, peer reviewed, research articles, and systematic reviews, and the search was limited to publications between January 2014 to August 2019. Search results found 196 articles originally. The researcher removed duplicates and scanned the titles narrowing the literature to a total of thirteen articles. The articles included comprised literature reviews, interviews, group intervention studies, a cross-sectional study, and case-controlled design. From this systematic review, common themes that emerged included sibling demographics and characteristics, emotional/behavioral difficulties, a lost sense of self, altered family functioning, the effect of peer, family, and professional support systems, and lack of knowledge and communication. These themes can be interpreted as factors that may influence a sibling’s cancer experience. The results of this research project showed that the sibling’s experience to cancer is complex, multifaceted, and unique. These findings emphasize the need to provide siblings with adequate resources and support in an effort to mitigate the negative effects a diagnosis and treatment of cancer can bring. It is important that the entire healthcare team is competent in this care perspective so that appropriate referrals and interventions can be made, and siblings have the smoothest transition possible.

Opening a business is often an exciting time in one’s life, as they take their business idea into the marketplace. But, most individuals fail to adequately address whether their business can actually succeed before entering the marketplace. The thesis, Creating a Successful Gluten-Free Bakery: A Financial Model and Analysis analyzes whether or not a gluten-free bakery is a viable business to open in today’s marketplace. By costing the main financial variables, creating a financial model of a gluten-free bakery, and running scenario analysis, I was able to find whether or not opening a gluten-free bakery was a viable business in today’s marketplace.
