Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Leadership, as a field of study, has suffered under the dialectic between an ephemerality which keeps the true nature of leadership difficult to quantify and an ardent desire to have leadership fully understood so that societal institutions may improve. It is the primary focus of this research to view leadership as the collection of skills that an individual develops over time which allows them to demonstrate leadership ability regardless of their actual position within an organization. Through a review of the leadership skills literature, a potentially unifying framework for understanding and measuring leadership skills was extrapolated: Mumford, Campion, and Morgeson’s Leadership Skills STRATAPLEX (2007). In order to determine the ability of the framework to serve as a unified model between the divergent characteristics of the public and private sectors, a limited replication study was performed on a targeted sample of Human Resources (HR) leaders in the public and private sectors. The study consisted of a twenty-three-question survey which captured the HR leaders’ years of experience, sector type (sector of employment), and their self-rated measurement of the twenty-one leadership skills needed to perform in their position. Through the limited replication study, it was found that there existed no statistically significant difference between the sector type and any of the twenty-one leadership skills within this replication study. Although it should be noted that some of the leadership skills did approach statistical significance, a more robust replication of the STRATAPLEX for the explicit purpose of determining a relationship between sector type and the twenty-one leadership skills would prove useful in determining the veracity of these results. The results of this study serve to doubly inform leadership researchers of the possibility of creating a unified leadership skills framework as well as demonstrating to organizational leaders the value in producing leadership training which models this framework as its foundation for all leadership positions.

This study aims to evaluate and explore whether a positive correlation exists between female leadership and corporate social responsibility, as well as its subsequent reasoning, while specifically focusing on female leaders within the upper management (i.e. board of directors and CEOs) of S&P 500 firms. Since several studies identify a positive relationship between female leadership and corporate social responsibility, our case study of IBM and PepsiCo aims to provide a real-life framework to these theoretical models. Ultimately, our case study does align with the findings of those models, yet also provides a unique perspective as to the reasoning for the difference in CSR outcomes, citing business strategy as opposed to altruism and other-orientation. Due to our limited sample size, our findings do not empirically support this notion, but instead offers a potential area for further research.

"FIJI's Shave to Save" took place in Fall 2021 when 47 members of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) at Arizona State University got their heads shaved as a public demonstration of the fraternity's commitment to the mission of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and their Center for Rare Childhood Disorders

"FIJI's Shave to Save" took place in Fall 2021 when 47 members of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) at Arizona State University got their heads shaved as a public demonstration of the fraternity's commitment to the mission of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and their Center for Rare Childhood Disorders (the Center). Through tremendous community support, the majority of which came from members' families, FIJI alumni, and participating member sororities of Arizona State University's Panhellenic Council, we collectively raised $63,640 for the Center. These funds are directed towards the Center's groundbreaking research and efforts to improve the lives of children with rare disorders through genomic sequencing. Aside from the lives impacted by the fundraiser, this news was highlighted in publications from multiple media outlets and exhibited the positive impact that Greek Life is capable of. Months prior to this initiative, Taylor Dintzner (2021 Chapter President) and Cameron Chew (2021 Philanthropy Chairman) were lost and did not know how to approach the execution of a successful fundraiser. In December 2021, they met with Rob Caudill, Executive Director at the International Headquarters of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), to discuss international publicity for the initiative. The verdict was that other FIJI Chapters may benefit from a "toolkit" that details how FIJI at Arizona State University was able to raise $63,500 for TGen. "FIJI's Shave to Save: A Toolkit for Successful Fundraising by Charitable Organizations" is intended to be a resource that encourages FIJI Chapters internationally to execute their own "FIJI's Shave to Save" initiative, giving them all of the tools necessary to follow a similar format and raise funds for TGen's Center for Rare Childhood Disorders. With the reality that 60% of post-graduates are less satisfied with their social life in adulthood than in college, many young adults find themselves searching to solve the shared fear of finding communities in new spheres of life. Jillian Cote and Mia Cavalier's social application concept, "The Loop", addresses this problem through unique recommendations based on location services, authentic UGC, and entertaining digital appearances. Through extensive research and development, a prototype has been designed for the application interface, and intensive surveys and interviews have been conducted to pinpoint target markets, consumer interest, and ultimate adoption potential. At its core, "The Loop" is a modern, efficient, and functional social application for young adults and post-graduates to stay connected to key parts of their lives regardless of the life phase they’re in. It allows each individual to focus on what’s important to them, while the app keeps them in the loop for everything else.

The United States military, even including ROTC programs, is becoming increasingly diverse which reflects the variety of cultures present in the country. Latinos are a notable and growing part of this diversity, contributing to the country’s armed forces while dealing with a unique set of opportunities and obstacles. The current

The United States military, even including ROTC programs, is becoming increasingly diverse which reflects the variety of cultures present in the country. Latinos are a notable and growing part of this diversity, contributing to the country’s armed forces while dealing with a unique set of opportunities and obstacles. The current demographic of our nation’s leaders in the military consists of mainly white individuals (Department of Defense, 2022). To understand why this is the case, survey and interview data were gathered from both male and female Latino cadets participating in ASU Army ROTC currently. Latino cadets in ASU Army ROTC were asked what experiences or opportunities either hindered or reaffirmed their decision to become officers in the Army. Moreover, the research delves into the rich cultural and familial factors that can play an important role in shaping motivations. The research has found that Latino cadets are experiencing hardship in the form of lack of mentorship in the early years, lack of intentional integration for Latino cadets joining the program, and limited diversity found in upper levels of leadership in the Army. By addressing and recognizing the unique issues regardless of background, military institutions can garner diversity and assure that all incoming cadets, have equal opportunities to excel as leaders in the armed forces in the United States.
