Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Motor learning is the process of improving task execution according to some measure of performance. This can be divided into skill learning, a model-free process, and adaptation, a model-based process. Prior studies have indicated that adaptation results from two complementary learning systems with parallel organization. This report attempted to answer the question of whether a similar interaction leads to savings, a model-free process that is described as faster relearning when experiencing something familiar. This was tested in a two-week reaching task conducted on a robotic arm capable of perturbing movements. The task was designed so that the two sessions differed in their history of errors. By measuring the change in the learning rate, the savings was determined at various points. The results showed that the history of errors successfully modulated savings. Thus, this supports the notion that the two complementary systems interact to develop savings. Additionally, this report was part of a larger study that will explore the organizational structure of the complementary systems as well as the neural basis of this motor learning.

Every communication system has a receiver and a transmitter. Irrespective if it is wired or wireless.The future of wireless communication consists of a massive number of transmitters and receivers. The question arises, can we use computer vision to help wireless communication? To satisfy the high data requirement, a large number of antennas are required. The devices that employ large-antenna arrays have other sensors such as RGB camera, depth camera, or LiDAR sensors.These vision sensors help us overcome the non-trivial wireless communication challenges, such as beam blockage prediction and hand-over prediction.This is further motivated by the recent advances in deep learning and computer vision that can extract high-level semantics from complex visual scenes, and the increasing interest of leveraging machine/deep learning tools in wireless communication problems.[1] <br/><br/>The research was focused solely based on technology like 3D cameras,object detection and object tracking using Computer vision and compression techniques. The main objective of using computer vision was to make Milli-meter Wave communication more robust, and to collect more data for the machine learning algorithms. Pre-build lossless and lossy compression algorithms, such as FFMPEG, were used in the research. An algorithm was developed that could use 3D cameras and machine learning models such as YOLOV3, to track moving objects using servo motors and low powered computers like the raspberry pi or the Jetson Nano. In other words, the receiver could track the highly mobile transmitter in 1 dimension using a 3D camera. Not only that, during the research, the transmitter was loaded on a DJI M600 pro drone, and then machine learning and object tracking was used to track the highly mobile drone. In order to build this machine learning model and object tracker, collecting data like depth, RGB images and position coordinates were the first yet the most important step. GPS coordinates from the DJI M600 were also pulled and were successfully plotted on google earth. This proved to be very useful during data collection using a drone and for the future applications of position estimation for a drone using machine learning. <br/><br/>Initially, images were taken from transmitter camera every second,and those frames were then converted to a text file containing hex-decimal values. Each text file was then transmitted from the transmitter to receiver, and on the receiver side, a python code converted the hex-decimal to JPG. This would give an efect of real time video transmission. However, towards the end of the research, an industry standard, real time video was streamed using pre-built FFMPEG modules, GNU radio and Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). The transmitter camera was a PI-camera. More details will be discussed as we further dive deep into this research report.

Communication skills are vital for the world we inhabit. Both oral and written communication are some of the most sought-after skills in the job market today; this holds true in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Despite the high demand for communication skills, communication classes are not required for some STEM majors (Missingham, 2006). STEM major maps are often so packed with core classes that they nearly exclude the possibility of taking communication courses. Students and job seekers are told they need to be able to communicate to succeed but are not given any information or support in developing their skills. Scientific inquiry and discovery cannot be limited to only those that understand high-level jargon and have a Ph.D. in a subject. STEM majors and graduates must be able to translate information to communities beyond other experts. If they cannot communicate the impact of their research and discoveries, who is going to listen to them?<br/>Overall, the literature around communication in STEM fields demonstrate the need for and value of specific, teachable communication skills. This paper will examine the impact of a communication training module that teaches specific communication skills to BIO 182: General Biology II students. The communication training module is an online module that teaches students the basics of oral communication. The impact of the module will be examined through the observation of students’ presentations.

This interdisciplinary thesis examines the possible relationship between the public speaking experience for women and the gender gap in political ambition. First, a historical analysis of women public speakers ranging from the 1800s to the Suffragettes to female politicians in the 1900s reveals a pattern of female public speakers in politics receiving extreme criticism for their communicative behavior. The thesis then turns to the socialization of young girls, highlighting how gameplay in children translates into gendered communicative behavior in adult women. Next, an examination of the pedagogy of public speaking showcases how the public speaking experience is different for women than it is for men, and how public speaking traditionally is taught in a masculine style. Then, through a review of the literature on the gender gap in political ambition, it is seen that not only are women severely underrepresented in political office in the United States, but women have far less political ambition than men. And a case study of the 2008 presidential primaries and elections, highlighting modern women in politics, demonstrates that the few women who are politically ambitious in the 21st century face criticism that mirrors those faced by political women decades and centuries prior. Finally, the thesis offers possible solutions to changing the experience of women as public speakers and fostering political ambition in women.

Alexander the Great is one of the most well known figures in history, but while many of his battles and actions are documented, little is known about his personality. This is because very few documents survive from his contemporaries, and we have no way of knowing his own private thoughts.

Alexander the Great is one of the most well known figures in history, but while many of his battles and actions are documented, little is known about his personality. This is because very few documents survive from his contemporaries, and we have no way of knowing his own private thoughts. However, extensive research has been done to try to establish and understanding of the character of the man, and so, in an effort to create the most well-rounded and complete portrayal of Alexander the Great possible, I seek to examine and synthesize many of these testimonials into a comprehensive analysis of his personality. In this process, we must rely on the secondary historians of Alexander, namely Quintus Curtius Rufus and Lucius Flavius Arrianus. Curtius is important because he based much of his work off of Cleitarchus who actually was a contemporary of Alexander. I will also look to the work of more recent hisotrins and popular literature in order to form the most comprehensive picture of Alexander's personality.

Abstract The Art of Memory: Public Memorials Scarlett Olson In ancient times, memorials were constructed to commemorate victories in battle or to pay homage to kings and gods. Now, however, memorials focus more on the events of war and those who died fighting for their country. They are spaces designed to create an atmosphere of quiet reflection to allow us to honor the dead and to serve as a reminder of the consequences of our actions. In this paper, I will analyze public memorials, specifically the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, using the concept of collective memory. The idea of collective memory was first formulated by Maurice Halbwachs in the early twentieth century, and it is at its core the belief that a group can share the same memories regarding specific events. The ideas and theories of collective memory, when applied to the analysis of memorial, can provide a new framework for exploring the form, content, effect, and affect of these structures. Collective memory can be manipulated by society and the creation of specific memorials is one very effective way to influence public opinion about certain historical events.

I am double majoring in Film & Media Production and Geography, and whenever I tell anyone that their first reaction is one of polite incredulity. The two disciplines seem so far from each other that there doesn't seem to be any possible way of combining them. With this project, I wanted to incorporate these two very different fields into one meaningful product. Using film as a medium, I explored how impactful a geographical location can truly be on someone. When we think about our pasts, we often focus on the people and events, losing sight of the physical location where these memories take place. Life in a Museum attempts to shine a light on this forgotten aspect of memory. I moved to Prescott, Arizona when I was 11 and moved away when I was 18, living there for only 7 years. Yet as time passes, I am starting to realize how impactful Prescott has been on me. For my Honors Creative Project, I created a video essay in an attempt to "map" my relationship with Prescott and how it has changed over time. Incorporating digital video, Google SketchUp Animations and historical photographs, Life in a Museum acts as collage that attempts to mimic the tangential aspects of memory. The film addresses my upbringing in Prescott, the town's intense pride for its history, and how living there has affected my own perception of time, memory, death and the future. Abstract Communication scholars have begun to contribute to the theoretical understanding of resilience as a dynamic and collaborative process, which can be talked into being (Buzzanell, 2010). Previous research has examined the role of resilience in romantic couples, however, has focused disproportionately on heterosexual couples. This offers a limited, and singular understanding of how resilience is developed and sustained in romantic relationships. To better understand the scope and breadth of resilience, this study examined five same-sex couples through an in-depth qualitative case study analysis. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the small body of existing data, as well as, enhance our understanding of how resilience works in other contexts. Data was analyzed for thematic patterns, and compared to existing data on same-sex relationships. The findings supported that resilience is a collaborative process that is facilitated by communication. There were some discrepancies from the data collected in this study compared to previous findings; however, due to the small sample size, findings from this study cannot be generalized to the larger population.

Guided by the Obama administration, NASA has begun developing commercial launch capabilities. For both cargo and crew delivery to the International Space Station, NASA has selected companies to build and operate the vehicles at a fixed price. Alexander McDonald suggests that this continues a trend in space exploration established by large observatory projects, and that the Apollo-era style of funding and operation was a historical anomaly. This paper attempts to discover if historical analog can support or weaken this thesis. The analogs chosen are two episodes in the history of terrestrial exploration: the experience of the Spanish and British empires in North America. These are compared to the history of space exploration up until today, focusing on how the role of private enterprise has changed in each instance. While the analogies between historical episodes are weak in a few areas, they do possess a common narrative concerning the shifting balance between private and government interests. This narrative supports McDonald's thesis, and shows that NASA's current policy anticipates an expected transition towards a private-public hybrid model of exploration and expansion.
