This paper is a reflection on the background, planning, development, and, implementation of the Climate Action Leadership Program (CALP). The 21st Century has been named the “century of the environment”. This program builds the next generation of leaders who are pursuing solutions to climate change. The program is result of professional and scientific research in the areas of education and sustainability that uncovers the lingering sustainability education gap within the U.S. public school system. Research methodology applied combined qualitative and quantitative data analysis approach, including surveys, observations, and, academic research. The results show there are few programs in grades 8th to 12th, a crucial demographic, incorporating sustainability leadership education training or teaching the fundamental principles of sustainability in the public school curriculum.
We can no longer assume that social and environmental challenges such as pollution, dwindling resources and climate change can be set-aside for future generations. The creation of sustainability leadership education programs would properly prepare students for the greatly important, globally recognized social and environmental issues they actually face throughout their education, and professional practice. The compulsion to act is the outcome of the Climate Action Leadership Program. CALP is designed to create the next generation of sustainability leaders by transforming thoughts and ideas into effective climate action. Students learn how to build personal resilience, tell compelling stories and foster sustainable behavior in their own school communities.

The City of Phoenix is interested in bringing a plastic processing facility to the Phoenix metro area. A facility could potentially to increase the diversion rates of recyclables, allow for more efficient use of locally reclaimed material and bring new jobs to the Phoenix metropolitan economy. Contrary to the classic “put it in the bin, we’ll take care of it” attitude presented by large recyclers such as Waste Management and Republic Services, recycling economics are complex; often both a beacon of technological advancement and a lagger with regard to spot-market capabilities. Based on interviews with elite stakeholders and industry research, this mixed method paper will examine the current PET plastic recycling market and the potential for Phoenix to increase its circular manufacturing of plastic. The final analysis will culminate in a proposed set of recommendations that could help Phoenix achieve its long-term waste diversion goals.

Sustainable purchasing has become and increasingly salient way by which local governments can decrease their resource consumptions, while also addressing broader climate action goals. Successfully implemented sustainable purchasing policies have the potential to reduce consumption and waste, expand green purchasing markets, and catalyze spillover benefits such as financial savings. Furthermore, city-level actions have become increasingly significant as the federal government ceases critical climate research and pulls out of collaborative climate deals (i.e. The Paris Climate Accord). Using data from the Sustainable Purchasing Researching Initiative at Arizona State University’s Center for Organization Research and Design, as well as qualitative policy analyses, the author investigates the elements of a city’s sustainable purchasing policy (SPP) that are related to its implementation success. Furthermore, the author compares these initial findings to the case study of Phoenix, AZ where she explores whether these elements are also present in the City of Phoenix’s sustainable purchasing policy. The author finds that six key policy elements are generally associated with higher SPP implementation success rates — mandatory requirements, accountability, multi-level governance, vendors requirements, advocacy, and continual improvement. While additional policy elements undoubtedly play a role in the successful implementation of a SPP, the author concludes cities that incorporate these specific elements are better positioned for successful and sustainable implementation. Conclusions further show that the City of Phoenix’s 2007 EPP contained only two of these policy elements. As a result of this project and the author’s work with the City, the 2017 revised SPP incorporates all six policy elements.
