Student academic performance has far-reaching implications not only on individual students but also the universities and colleges they attend. Student academic performance can affect their time in school as well as their future earning potential, and colleges and universities have a shared interest in the academic performance and retention of their students as many state and federal funding opportunities consider these metrics when allocating taxpayer dollars. To assist in the mutual desire for students to succeed, the Calm Connection start-up venture formed with the goal of integrating biofeedback therapy with a student’s unique education needs. For students, one of the largest barriers to effective learning is issues of focus and information retention, and the repeated use of biofeedback therapy trains students to overcome these focus issues and works in conjunction with our app’s study aid and scheduling ability.

Student academic performance has far-reaching implications, such as lifetime earnings potential, that are beyond the immediate impact it may have on any individual student (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2019). Colleges and universities also have a shared interest in the retention of their students as a poor reputation can depress enrollment and tarnish their brand. Public institutions have an especially large incentive for student success as many state and federal funding opportunities consider student retention and performance when allocating taxpayer dollars (Li, 2018). To assist in the mutual desire for students to succeed, the Calm Connection start-up venture formed with the goal of seamlessly integrating biofeedback therapy with a student’s unique education needs. Forming the foundation of the resulting Calm Connection app is software patented by NASA which allows for the collection and manipulation of biofeedback monitoring data on mobile devices with distinguishing features such as geolocation. For students, one of the largest barriers to effective learning is issues of focus and information retention, whether due to problems at home, conditions such as ADHD, or the high prevalence of test anxiety among students (Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health et al., 2012). The repeated use of biofeedback therapy trains students to overcome these focus issues and works in conjunction with our app’s study aid and scheduling ability (Henriques et al., 2011). Among those surveyed and participants in follow-up focus groups, the Calm Connection app and its use of biofeedback monitoring has generated much interest and documented traction.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has a large burden on society. It is a causal agent of 99.7% of all cervical cancer cases. The prevalence of HPV infection worldwide is high, but the burden of HPV infections lies on less developed regions. Cervical cancer is not associated with immediate symptoms, screening methods are needed to detect HPV disease presence before lesions progress to cervical cancer. Protein biomarkers are a growing area of diagnostic medicine and facilitate the detection of disease at an early and treatable stage. Technologies for healthcare diagnostics often require laboratory space or expensive instrumentation, which are not feasible for point of care applications. In order for clinical diagnostics to advance in developing countries, low cost, rapid, portable, and easy to use point of care diagnostic tests are needed. The project adapts the Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) and Nucleic Acid-Programmable Protein Array (NAPPA) to a proof of concept assay for use in magnetic bead based microfluidics. The biomarker used for analyte detection was E7, as a strong correlation has been found between presence of E7 antibodies and development of advanced cervical cancer. It is demonstrated that magnetic microfluidic assay design for rapid detection of antibodies is amenable to fluorescence detection in point of care settings. The data demonstrates that the microfluidic assay is rapid, low-cost, specific, and relevant to serology detection. The assay detects antibody responses to analytes with the point of care reader system and is realized in an on chip capacity. With the integration of anti-GST capture antibodies conjugated to the magnetic beads in the microfluidic system, many analytes can be detected without large changes to the existing assay structure, which gives the ability to adapt the system to analytes of interest rapidly.
