Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a condition involving the weakening of the pelvic floor, with a prevalence of up to 50% of women experiencing the condition to some degree. Individuals with the condition are susceptible to multiple symptoms include vaginal protrusion, dyspareunia, and difficulties with waste excretion. Risk factors are common and numerous for POP, and the economic burden of the condition poses a significant cost to nations worldwide. For many years, the primary solution to POP was the usage of transvaginal meshes, often composed of polypropylene, but rising reports of harmful side effects have led to their recall. Due to this, the space is open for novel solutions, and treatments based in regenerative medicine are on the rise. One such potential treatment is the usage of functionalized polyvinyl alcohol scaffolds to support the regeneration and strengthening of the pelvic floor. To validate the usage of this scaffold, this study focuses on the biocompatibility of the scaffolds, with specific focus on the maintenance of cell viability and proliferation on the scaffold. Through usage of metabolic assays and fluorescence microscopy, scaffolds composed of functional polyvinyl alcohol with cellulose have shown promise in supporting the cell types necessary for reconstructing the pelvic floor.

Cognitive functioning is an extremely crucial part of daily living. In individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) these tasks get even more challenging. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of Assisted Cycling Therapy (ACT) on cognitive functions in children with Down Syndrome (DS). This study examines the change in cognitive functioning using tests like Reaction time, Tower of London, and Card Sorting over an eight week intervention. All seven participants in the study were assigned to complete the ACT intervention, in which they rode a stationary bike with the assistance of a motor to maintain a cadence of at least 35% greater than their voluntary cycling speed. All participants completed the ACT intervention but a few were unable to complete some cognitive functioning tests due to their intellectual abilities. Overall, the results of this study showed that information processing, task-switching and problem solving improved following the eight week ACT intervention. These results provided more scope for future research in this field which can be done by modifying the time period of the intervention, increasing sample size of the study as well as conducting additional cognitive function tests. The results of our study are discussed with respect to the upward regulation of neurotrophic factors which are involved in increasing the functioning within the prefrontal cortex following exercise intervention.

Many would contend that the United States healthcare system should be moving towards a state of health equity. Here, every individual is not disadvantaged from achieving their true health potential. However, a variety of barriers currently exist that restrict individuals across the country from attaining equitable health outcomes; one of these is the social determinants of health (SDOH). The SDOH are non-medical factors that influence the health outcomes of an individual such as air pollution, food insecurity, and transportation accessibility. Each of these factors can influence the critical illnesses and health outcomes of individuals and, in turn, diminish the level of health equity in affected areas. Further, the SDOH have a strong correlation with lower levels of health outcomes such as life expectancy, physical health, and mental health. Despite having influenced the United States health care system for decades, the industry has only begun to address its influences within the past few years. Through exploration between the associations of the SDOH and health outcomes, programming and policy-making can begin to address the barrier to health equity that the SDOH create.

Food insecurity as defined by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or the ability to acquire such food in a socially acceptable manner. This research paper looks at differences in rates of food insecurity within the general population, among the ethnic groups and across college campuses. Current literature indicates that non-Hispanic blacks are disproportionately affected both within the general population and within the student population when compared to their White counterparts. This research paper is a review of literature that addresses the challenges associated with food insecurity among college students in the US, its causes, coping strategies, and implications both to the students and the society at large. Outlined are successful interventions at various institutions of higher education, resources and programs in place to tackle this societal malaise among college students in particular. Next, the paper addresses the issue of food insecurity among the three public universities in the State of Arizona with a focus on what program and resources each of the universities have in place to help students who are faced with food insecurity. Finally, several workable interventions are outlined that could be implemented to address food insecurity among student population in post-secondary campuses across the nation; ranging from the customary food pantry set up to the grandiose for universities that desire to be bold, sustainable, revolutionary, desire to be unique among its peers and be trail blazers in addressing food insecurity among college students.

Methods:

Background: There is limited literature evaluating the impact of disseminating research results to past research study participants and their families. The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether disseminating results from a diabetes prevention program to past participants and their families facilitates motivation to engage in healthier behaviors. Methods: Previous youth participants from the “Every Little Step Counts” study were contacted and invited to a community dissemination event in November of 2022 at a local YMCA in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. All individuals in attendance at the event were invited to complete a 10-item questionnaire following a presentation about diabetes and the study results. 10 youth past participants, 9 adult past participants, and 13 community members completed the questionnaire to assess whether dissemination of past study results increases motivation to engage in healthier behaviors. Results: Aggregate responses revealed a 28.43% increase in motivation to eat healthier and a 33.45% increase in motivation to increase exercise. An increase in average response frequency was evident amongst all figures, indicating that overall, dissemination of research results was found to increase motivation to engage in healthier behaviors across community members, adult participants, and youth participants. Conclusions: This study supports the importance of disseminating research results from a diabetes prevention program to past participants in order to reinforce and maintain behavior change skills taught throughout the study, with the long-term goal of reducing type 2 diabetes risk in youth.

Lean philosophy is a set of practices aimed at reducing waste in an industry/enterprise. By eliminating the aspects of a system that do not add value, the system process will be able to work continuously in a flow, and as a result have a shorter cycle time. With a shorter cycle time, less resources are diminished, and efforts can be properly distributed in order to achieve maximum efficiency. In relation, Six Sigma is a process that aims to reduce the variability of a system, and in turn reduce the number of defects and improve overall quality of a product/process. For this reason, Lean and Six Sigma go hand-in-hand. Cutting out non-value adding steps in a process will increase efficiency and perfecting the steps still in place will improve quality. Both aspects are important when it comes to the success of a business practice. DNASU Plasmid Repository would be a major benefactor of the Lean Six Sigma process. The process of cloning DNA requires great attention to detail and time in order to avoid defects. For instance, any mistake made in the bacteria growth process, such as contamination, will result in a significant amount of time being wasted. In addition, the purification of DNA steps also necessitates vigilant observation since the procedure is highly susceptible to little mistakes that could have big impacts. The goal of this project will be to integrate Lean Six Sigma methodology into the DNASU laboratory. By applying numerous aspects of Lean Six Sigma, the DNA repository will be able to improve its efficiency and quality of processes and obtain its highest rate of success.
