Despite the wealth of folk music traditions in Portugal and the importance of the clarinet in the music of bandas filarmonicas, it is uncommon to find works featuring the clarinet using Portuguese folk music elements. In the interest of expanding this type of repertoire, three new works were commissioned from three different composers. The resulting works are Seres Imaginarios 3 by Luis Cardoso; Delirio Barroco by Tiago Derrica; and Memória by Pedro Faria Gomes. In an effort to submit these new works for inclusion into mainstream performance literature, the author has recorded these works on compact disc. This document includes interview transcripts with each composer, providing first-person discussion of each composition, as well as detailed biographical information on each composer. To provide context, the author has included a brief discussion on Portuguese folk music, and in particular, the role that the clarinet plays in Portuguese folk music culture.

This project includes a recording and performance guide for three newly commissioned pieces for the clarinet. The first piece, shimmer, was written by Grant Jahn and is for B-flat clarinet and electronics. The second piece, Paragon, is for B-flat clarinet and piano and was composed by Dr. Theresa Martin. The third and final piece, Duality in the Eye of a Bovine, was written by Kurt Mehlenbacher and is for B-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, and piano. In addition to the performance guide, this document also includes background information and program notes for the compositions, as well as composer biographical information, a list of other works featuring the clarinet by each composer, and transcripts of composer and performer interviews. This document is accompanied by a recording of the three pieces.

Each of these new pieces use contemporary clarinet techniques, including electronics, prerecorded sounds, multiphonics, circular breathing, multiple articulation, demi-clarinet, and the clari-flute. The repertoire composed includes Grant Jahn’s Duo for Two Clarinets, Reggie Berg’s Funkalicious for Clarinet and Piano, Rusty Banks’ Star Juice for Clarinet and Fixed Media, and Chris Malloy’s A Celestial Breath for Clarinet and Electronics. In addition to the musical commissions, this project also includes interviews with the composers indicating how they wrote these works and what their influences were, along with any information pertinent to the performer, professional recordings of each piece, as well as performance notes and suggestions.

In My Dreams is a song cycle for mezzo-soprano, narrator, and piano, based on the poetry of survivors of childhood sex trafficking. It was created to raise awareness of trafficking through music and poetry through the expression of individual dreams and voices. In My Dreams recounts the devastating loss of childhood and celebrates empowering words of survival. The poetry was collected in poetry workshops held in Calcutta and Delhi India in January 2009. After the poems were selected, translated, and edited, composer Dr. Gerard Yun set them to music. This document outlines the process of creating and performing this unique humanitarian cycle. It also includes the full score, poetry, and composer's notes. Topics discussed include: experiences in finding and collecting poetry; collaboration with the composer, Dr. Gerard Yun; form and structure of the cycle; how each piece was molded to give voice to its inspired poem. Every song is analyzed from both a musical and performance perspective to give an account of the challenges and triumphs of the work and the process of undertaking it, as well as a better understanding of the background leading to its composition.

According to the 2010 Trafficking in Persons report produced by the United States government, over 6.8 million women and children across the globe were forced into labor or into the sex trade. The Philippines was recently promoted to Tier 2 in the summer of 2011 as mandated by the United

According to the 2010 Trafficking in Persons report produced by the United States government, over 6.8 million women and children across the globe were forced into labor or into the sex trade. The Philippines was recently promoted to Tier 2 in the summer of 2011 as mandated by the United States Trafficking Victims' Protection Act after being on the Tier 2 Watch List in 2009-2010. Being on the Tier 2 Watch List means that the Philippine government did not enforce laws that combat human trafficking in 2009-2011. It was speculated that the country had the potential to be demoted to Tier 3. In 2011, they were still having problems in this area, but the Philippine government is making significant efforts to prevent human trafficking. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate forced labor and sex trafficking among Filipino women in the Philippines. The paper seeks to educate the collegiate audience on this subject and aims to inspire conversation and action. Through the course of the research study, three prominent themes emerged that could be the major contributing factors that make Filipino women vulnerable to trafficking. They are as follows: (1) the Philipine government's corruption/lackadaisical effort to fight trafficking, (2) economic factors, whereas a majority of cities and regions in the Philippines have a high percentage of people living in poverty, on top of an unwillingness to hire women in the fields other than the service sector, and (3) familial and cultural norms with their strong emphasis on stereotypical sex roles can be perceived as discrimination at birth which in turn, contributes to the victimization of the Filipina. This thesis also investigates the tactics of traffickers, how the traffic Filipinas and examines why Filipinas cannot or will not escape.
