Journalists are the eyes and ears for the communities in which they serve. They don’t cover all issues and stories, however, not necessarily because of a lack of concern, but due to the lack of diverse voices that work behind-the-scenes, on-air, and serve in leadership positions in television newsrooms. This paucity of diversity plays out in many more implicit rather than explicit ways. This issue has been addressed by the theoretical framework of intersectionality, utilized as a rationale in this thesis to further develop an argument on how the absence of diversity in television newsrooms affects the entry of new diverse employees in the workplace. The thesis also analyzes microaggressions in the workplace and the factors that influence not only the hiring process but also the ability of newsrooms to retain diverse talent. Most of all, this thesis gives voice to Black female television journalists who stayed in the journalism business despite all odds and highlights their struggles as well as coping strategies for building their careers and taking it to the heights they have.
The creative element of this thesis brings the research to life, with audio and video interviews that describe the challenges and accomplishments of the 11 interviewees currently working in the industry. This thesis reviews recent and older literature to find common trends, explore the issues previously addressed, and uses the interviews to provide a current picture of the situation in television newsrooms.

This project and method uses contemporary media sources to paint a broader picture of Black women's experiences in the U.S. under more visible conditions of modern day police brutality, and aims to expand the scope of Black feminist thought. As a primary academic source and inspiration for this project, "Black Feminist Thought" written by Patricia Hill Collins (2009), is used to clarify and illuminate the connection between these contemporary and more informal sources of Black feminist's intellectual work, and formal academic works from Black feminist tradition. Thus, using formal Black feminist works in conjunction with more informal, personal, and subjective narratives from Black women, in this project, is aimed at illuminating how contemporary examples of the state violence indicate that being and surviving under the conditions of today as a Black woman, is in itself a form of radical resistance.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX, a piece of legislation which aims for dismantling gender discrimination. Even with such actions females, especially Black females are not proportionally represented in the world of sports. Due to this phenomenon, a study was funded by the Global Sport Institute to look at barriers for Black Women and Girls sport participation. Focus groups and interviews were used to gather data. They utilized a semi-structured approach using open-ended questions, and were recorded and later transcribed. After a secondary data analysis was performed on the focus group and interview transcripts it was found that community views and resources play an important role in the sports participation for Black girls and women. The topics of legislation history, schools, resources, finances, access, and media views were further researched in order to understand their impact on Black girls and women. A public service announcement (PSA) video was created in order to communicate these findings in a more accessible and modern way. The goal of the PSA video is to not only educate the public about this problem concerning Black girls and women but to also empower and encourage communities to fix it.

For decades, engineering scholarship has presented data to address the underrepresentation of Black womxn in the engineering doctoral community. American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE)’s Engineering by the Numbers Report (2021) statistically showed that only 57 Black womxn out of 10,037 scholars received engineering doctorates in 2021. Engineering scholars have theorized about constructs ranging from whiteness to explain the system, to doctoral socialization to explain the culture, to retention explain the experiences. Yet, even with the plethora of scholarship, the problem of underrepresentation has remained consistent with limited action towards change from the faculty, the program, or the institution. Therefore, I aim to address this problem by cultivating emotional resonance toward action within the engineering community regarding engineering doctoral program underrepresentation for Black womxn. Using Arts-Based Research (ABR) and Black Feminist Thought (BFT), this dissertation illustrates the engineering PhD spirit-murdering experiences of Black womxn. Six Homegirls intellectually contributed to this study by sharing their time and experiences through artistic expressions and homegirl conversations. Through the lens of BFT’s matrix of domination, the composite blog shows that spirit-murdering for these Homegirls: 1) is a targeted act that is dehumanizing 2) occurs because of the aloof nature and capitalist ideals of the engineering academy, and 3) causes further conflict in negotiating identities as Black, woman, professional, researcher, and student. Leaning on BFT’s grounding as an Afrocentric methodological approach, the composite poem illustrates that these Homegirls: 1) have a common, understood epistemology because of their shared experiences of being Black and woman in their current, multi-layered social locations, 2) identify strongly with their positionality and values while describing their outsider-within status, and 3) experience spirit-murdering in an emotional, intellectual, and spiritual way that then results in physical manifestations. Rooted in BFT’s ethic of caring, the hip-hop mixtape’s progression describes homegirl’s spirit-renewal tactics as: 1) owning their professional identity, 2) dispelling projected biases, stereotypes, and aggressions, 3) calling out inequities in their interpersonal relationships and program culture, 4) learning to set boundaries to protect themselves, and 5) standing on their ways of knowing and being.

When Black women step into leadership roles, they confront well-documented organizational obstacles that hinder their progress. Existing research indicates that they experience differential treatment due to their intersectional identity as Black females, and these hindrances significantly impede their path to success. To increase the success of Black women in leadership roles, they need to be supported by professional development dedicated to strengthening their leadership self-efficacy. Through the theoretical lenses of intersectionality and the glass cliff phenomenon, this study investigates how an arts-based sister circle model impacts the leadership self-efficacy of Black women in leadership positions within the arts and culture sector in predominantly white organizations. Using an arts-based Experiential Learning Theory paradigm, this mixed-methods participatory action research design incorporated three virtual sister circle meetings, a participant interview, and a pre- and post-Leadership Self-Efficacy survey. Qualitative data also included digital journals, artistic reflections, and word clouds. I invited participants to join based on the following criteria: (a) Black woman, (b) manager or administrator, (c) working in a predominately white arts and culture organization such as a community arts school, art gallery, or music organization, and (d) commitment to engage in online and workplace learning experiences. Five participants throughout the United States began the study, though only two completed the innovation due to attrition connected to their work. Assertions deduced from the results were: (1) Black women face many challenges when promoted into leadership positions in predominantly white organizations, driving them to seek opportunities to network and create community with other Black women leaders; (2) Sister Circle meetings serve as community spaces providing opportunities for deep conversation and problem-solving without fear of retribution about the social, cultural, and emotional challenges they face as Black women leaders in their organizations; and (3) Participation in Sister Circle meetings may enhance leadership self-efficacy and career development and positively impact work-life balance. Survey results reinforce the sister circle model's positive influence on Black women. The findings collectively suggest that sister circles, as a coaching model, fulfill a crucial role in addressing the nuanced needs of Black women in leadership positions.

Over the last four centuries, Black women have been overwhelmingly understood, imagined, and defined through a Eurocentric and oppressive lens. The Eurocentric or white lens places pseudo-characteristics on Black women that inaccurately describe them. The qualities ascribed to Black women are rooted in racial ideologies that benefit and progress the interest of White supremacy. This history has placed Black women in tension with institutionalized medicine, discouraging them from seeking or using healthcare resources. Without trust in a system positioned to heal, treat, and prevent health ailments, Black women cannot dialogue with those that are a part of that system. Paulo Freire argues that "dialogue is the encounter between men, mediated by the world, in order to name the world (Freire, 2000, p. 90)." By centering Black women and their voices, I envision (re)naming the world. Understanding how Black women from Lincoln County, Mississippi describe their health and bodies sheds light on their daily experiences that facilitate self-care, womanhood, and identity. This dissertation covers three related studies that are addressing: 1) how Black women from Mississippi see their bodies outside of deficit health, 2) how Black women’s sisterhood has been a collective effort to build womanhood and health, and how societal stereotypes can interfere or damage the progress of sisterhood, and 3) the importance of allowing for Black women’s ways of knowing to create liberatory data collection methods that represent who they are and their truth. I examine these dynamics using a mixed-methods approach including community-based participatory research and rapid ethnographic assessment sampling techniques (e.g., working with a community advisor), semi-structured interviews, Sister-girl Talks (focus groups), participant observation, and autoethnography. The results of the three-study mixed methods dissertation has both theoretical and practical implications for understanding the vital role that Black women need to play bring healing to their health in both healthcare settings (e.g., clinics) and healthcare planning (health evaluation programs and interventions.

ABSTRACTThis dissertation addresses two pivotal challenges within the US technology industry: racial equity and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). It investigates whether the integration of AI in human resources (HR) can foster inclusivity and diversity for Black women in the tech workforce. Despite numerous diversity initiatives, Black women account for less than 2% of the US tech workforce, symbolizing a persistent challenge. Furthermore, AI often perpetuates structural biases, magnifying workforce inequities. This dissertation employs intersectionality, responsible innovation, and algorithmic bias theories to amplify the voices of Black women. It poses three critical questions: 1) How have Black women's HR experiences influenced diversity issues in the tech industry? 2) How is AI in HR developed considering the experiences of Black women? 3) What measures can enhance the role of AI in HR to promote diversity without deepening inequalities? Key findings reveal that current HR practices do not adequately serve Black women, driven by competing corporate priorities. Solutions should concentrate on recruiting, developing, promoting, and retaining Black women. Black women acknowledge the potential of AI to either reinforce or mitigate biases, yet they express apprehension about the development and implementation of AI in HR, which often lacks Black women's input. For AI to facilitate positive diversity results, companies must actively involve Black women in its development. This entails understanding the problems Black women face, using insights to design AI that addresses these issues and supports Black women's success, and engaging Black women in the development and assessment of AI implementations in HR, thereby enhancing accountability for diversity outcomes.
