This paper analyzes why Amazon can further deploy its last mile by partnering with Uber for the short term. By utilizing Uber’s large transactional repository and subject matter expertise on meal delivery, Amazon can refine its short-term solutions, limit inherent risks, and maintain customer satisfaction. Uber stands to profit from the partnership by locking in the necessary demand volume to become profitable, while limiting its marketing expenses and lowering the cost per mile traveled. Uber Drivers will have more “jobs” available to remain logged into Uber’s platform and have the ability to execute multiple deliveries in parallel while having to drive less miles. Amazon already has the necessary physical infrastructure to dispatch packages and would barely need to adjust current operations, considering that all last-mile deliveries are executed by contractors in vans and standard sedans. Likewise, Uber would adapt quickly since its service-level monitoring of over 200,000 restaurants would be reduced to only one stakeholder and routes would often originate at the same point. Lastly, Amazon will not have to continue investing in additional equipment, as drivers will drive their own cars and utilize the Uber platform and its refined safety features.
The arrangement of this thesis is as follows: Chapter 1 will provide background information and list the complexities of last mile delivery. Chapter 2, Amazon’s Competitive Environment, will investigate Amazon’s external risks from a competitive analysis standpoint. Chapter 3 will cover how Amazon has leveraged the gig-economy to deliver its last-mile. Chapter 4 will dive into Uber’s threats and weak financial standing. Finally, Chapter 5 will conclude with the incentives and success metrics that support the proposed partnership.
My thesis project explored Amazon's private label and how third-party sellers can protect their products. My study aimed to find ways that third-party sellers can prevent Amazon’s private labels from entering their product space while also developing strategies that third-party sellers can implement to protect themselves from Amazon's private label brands. Ultimately finding that success on Amazon requires strategic thinking and a commitment to delivering value to customers, and third-party sellers who prioritize these goals will be well-positioned for long-term success.
Tropical peatlands play a critical role in global carbon storage and greenhouse gas flux, yet the role of microbial communities in these ecosystems remains poorly understood. Methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) are considered an efficient biological filter for methane and can mitigate its release into the atmosphere, facilitating an ecosystem’s capacity to become a net sink. Prokaryotic gene amplicon surveys targeting a unique biomarker instead of a universal one (i.e., 16S rRNA) can reveal a more comprehensive analysis of microbial communities with ecological functions (i.e., methanotrophy). The alpha subunit of particulate methane monooxygenase (pmoA) is commonly targeted as a phylogenetic biomarker for both aerobic and anaerobic MOB. Here, we tested three different primer sets and investigated their ability to assess methanotrophic diversity across three biogeochemically distinct tropical peatland sites in the Pastaza-Marañón foreland basin (PMFB) in western Amazonia. The results showed that sequencing using 16S rRNA and pmoA genes revealed differences in MOB taxonomic identification in 21 tropical peat soils. Beta diversity analysis of pmoA genes suggests that site location is not the main driver of differences in MOB community makeup. This work offers insight into the strengths and weaknesses of targeted gene amplicon surveys using 16S and pmoA from tropical peat soils as a case study.
This research explores Amazons growth amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and how it impacted its innovation initiatives. It examines the strategies employed by Amazon to drive innovation, explores the challenges encountered during this period of expansion, and identifies opportunities for innovation in a post-pandemic era. Additionally, this study offers insights and recommendations for organizations navigating similar circumstances.
