Students with disabilities are underrepresented and underserved in college science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) degrees. Disabled individuals comprise 26% of the U.S. population but only about 9% of the students enrolled in STEM undergraduate programs. Individuals with disabilities who do pursue STEM degrees report unique challenges within their programs, including struggling to receive needed accommodations and experiencing discrimination from peers and instructors. However, there has been limited research on the extent to which disability characteristics affect their experiences in STEM. To address this gap in the literature, we surveyed over 700 undergraduates with disabilities enrolled in STEM majors across the U.S. and probed their sense of belonging in science, feelings of morale, perception of campus climate, experienced classroom stigma, responsiveness of disability resource offices, scientific self-efficacy, science identity, and science community values. Using linear regression, we will assess and present on outcomes related to students’ persistence in college, outcomes specific to students with disabilities, and outcomes specific to these students in STEM. The findings of this work can be used to inform recommendations to create more inclusive experiences in college STEM for students with disabilities.

As the economy becomes more technologically driven the need for people in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) fields also increases. STEM fields have been overrun with white males. Congress has been trying to promote minority groups in these fields for thirty years with little success. One of the largest underrepresented groups is individuals with disabilities. This thesis project focuses on STEM outreach for a particular group of disabled, the deaf and hard of hearing. There is a long history of deaf and hard of hearing children being poorly educated due to actions by the hearing community. Deaf and hard of hearing children are isolated not only from other deaf individuals but from their natural language, sign language. The goal of this project is to promote better educational practices and opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing children that also encourage an interest in STEM fields and education. This goal is met through the creation of the website deafstem.com. The website promotes the ideals set by the Bill of Rights for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children established in part by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). These include the ideals that a deaf or hard of hearing child has the same ability and capacity for language as any other child and that language pertains to both English and American Sign Language (ASL), that the families of these children play a significant role in their success, and that these children should have access and exposure to deaf and hard of hearing adults. The website build a bridge between deaf children, their hearing family, and the deaf community while promoting STEM fields by providing ASL dictionaries for both STEM and everyday vocabulary, biographies of influential deaf adults in STEM fields, and extracurricular activities for deaf and hard of hearing children.

This is a particular concern in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) educational and professional climates. Numerous studies have demonstrated that sexual harassment of women is a pervasive issue in male-dominated fields. This is a particular concern in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) educational and professional climates. Because victims of sexual harassment can experience negative effects after the incidents, many women end up leaving the field. For my thesis project, I set out to create a curriculum that would teach engineering students about sexual harassment, gender bias, and their effects. In order to do this, engineering students (N = 10) participated in focus groups and individual interviews, where they were asked about their perceptions and responses to potential sexual harassment situations. Results of the focus groups revealed that the main topics that need to be addressed among engineering students are inclusion of all people, especially women; the definition and examples of sexual harassment; how to pick up on social cues; and bystander intervention techniques. A curriculum was then created that centered around those topics in a way that does not aim to make students uncomfortable, but instead aims to make them more conscious of their words and actions, as well as more empathetic to others’ viewpoints and experiences. The presentation ends with five scenarios based on the situations students brought up in the focus groups, in order for the students to practice what they’ve learned in a controlled setting before going out into the real world. I hope that by integrating this curriculum into first-year engineering classes, students will have more confidence to intervene if they see or hear something that could classify as sexual harassment. Ultimately, reductions in sexual harassment in educational settings can facilitate the academic and professional success of all students.
