Description
Online communities have created such an outpouring of new media that academia has not had the time to catch up. Creepypasta is a genre of online horror short story that began in the early 2000’s on the forums 4chan and Something Awful. In the twenty-two years since its inception, the academic discourse around it has sprouted but not flourished. Creepypasta as a genre is perhaps one of the newest and least understood offshoots of horror and the gothic. Thus far there have been no full-bodied attempts at defining the genre or looking at the works as a whole, instead there is only focus on the parts. This thesis will be attempting to define the genre and will undertake this by first analyzing the components that define the genre, its origins, claims to authenticity, and publishing routes, as well as the folkloric connections which have been the focus of the majority of the literature thus far. This will move into an analysis of a single example of the form, Accounts from a Lonely Broadcast Station, to demonstrate the application of the definition of the genre, but also to show the wide breadth of potential of this genre in being analyzed academically.

Description
For my creative project, I created a script for a podcast, which focused on The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson as well as the Netflix version directed by Mike Flanagan. Additionally, I focus on The Haunting of Bly Manor also directed by Mike Flanagan. Specifically, I analyzed concepts and characters through feminist film theory. In doing this, I was hoping to promote conversations about feminism. I believe to create change, more people need to think deeper about their, and womxn’s , realities; I hope, by connecting feminist discourse to a popular show series, I can offer a stepping stone for others to look at themselves, their relationships, and the realities of women and girls. Additionally, access to feminist theory is important in gaining a deeper understanding of patriarchy in modern-day society. So, I hope this podcast can provide that knowledge to the everyday young adult who doesn’t have access to this discourse.

This story ---Under Still Faces--- is a horror fiction story. It is influenced primarily by classic, gothic literature with themes from the horror and true crime genres. The story includes critical/theoretical concepts, literary devices, and techniques from gothic literature primarily including Freud’s Uncanny, uneven framing, and an unreliable narrator. It employs themes from Edgar Allan Poe’s novels as well as his thesis regarding plot in The Philosophy of Composition. Particular descriptive themes in conjunction with the use of gothic elements surprise the reader about the story’s true ending similar to Poe’s The Oval Portrait. Included is an analysis of the literary decisions made in the piece to evoke specific reactions and feelings from the reader.
