In this study, two novel sorbents (zeolite 4A and sodium polyacrylate) are tested to investigate if utilizing ultrasonic acoustic energy could decrease the amount of time and overall energy required to regenerate these materials for use in cooling applications. To do this, an experiment was designed employing a cartridge heater and a piezoelectric element to be simultaneously providing heat and acoustic power to a custom designed desorption bed while measuring the bed mass and sorbent temperature at various locations. The results prove to be promising showing that early in the desorption process ultrasound may expedite the desorption process in zeolite by as much as five times and in sodium polyacrylate as much as three times in comparison to providing heat alone. The results also show that in zeolite desorption utilizing ultrasound may be particularly beneficial to initiate desorption whereas in sodium polyacrylate ultrasound appears most promising in the after a temperature threshold is met. These are exciting results and may prove to be significant in the future as more novel heat-based cooling cycles are developed.

In this work, different methods for fabrication of flexible sensors and sensor characterization are studied. Using materials and equipment that is unconventional, it is shown that different processes can be used to create sensors that behave like commercially available sensors. The reason unconventional methods are used is to cut down on cost to produce the sensors as well as enabling the manufacture of custom sensors in different sizes and different configurations. Currently commercially available sensors are expensive and are usually designed for very specific applications. By creating these same types of sensors using new methods and materials, these new sensors will show that flexible sensor creation for many uses at a fraction of the cost is achievable.

Liquid injection in cross flows has applications in gas-turbine engines, afterburners and some rocket combustion chambers. Integral form of the conservation equations has been used to find a cubic formula for the drop size in liquid sprays in cross flows. Similar to the work on axial liquid sprays, the energy balance dictates that the initial kinetic energy of the gas and injected liquid be distributed into the final surface tension energy, kinetic energy of the gas and droplets, and viscous dissipation incurred. Kinetic energy of the cross flow is added to the energy balance. Then, only the viscous dissipation term needs to be phenomenologically modelled. The mass and energy balance for the spray flows renders to an expression that relates the drop size to all of the relevant parameters, including the gas- and liquid-phase velocities. The results agree well with experimental data and correlations for the drop size. The solution also provides for drop size-velocity cross-correlation, leading to drop size distributions based on the gas-phase velocity distribution. These aspects can be used in estimating the drop size for practical applications, and also in computational simulations of liquid injection in cross flows, and in other spray geometries in general.

As additive manufacturing grows as a cost-effective method of manufacturing, lighter, stronger and more efficient designs emerge. Heat exchangers are one of the most critical thermal devices in the thermal industry. Additive manufacturing brings us a design freedom no other manufacturing technology offers. Advancements in 3D printing lets us reimagine and optimize the performance of the heat exchangers with an incredible design flexibility previously unexplored due to manufacturing constraints.

In this research, the additive manufacturing technology and the heat exchanger design are explored to find a unique solution to improve the efficiency of heat exchangers. This includes creating a Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) geometry, Schwarz-D in this case, using Mathematica with a flexibility to control the cell size of the models generated. This model is then encased in a closed cubical surface with manifolds for fluid inlets and outlets before 3D printed using the polymer nylon for thermal evaluation.

In the extent of this study, the heat exchanger developed is experimentally evaluated. The data obtained are used to derive a relationship between the heat transfer effectiveness and the Number of Transfer Units (NTU).The pressure loss across a fluid channel of the Schwarz D geometry is also studied.

The data presented in this study are part of initial experimental evaluation of 3D printed TPMS heat exchangers.Among heat exchangers with similar performance, the Schwarz D geometry is 32% smaller compared to a shell-and-tube heat exchanger.

Membrane filtration is an important technology in industry. In the past few decades, equations have been developed from experimental results to predict cake formation and permeate flux decline in the membrane filtration process. In the current work, the block of particles on membrane surface is achieved by setting surface flux on membrane surface zero. This approach is implemented for both microfiltration and nanofiltration using OpenFOAM. Moreover, a new method to deal with cake resistance for nanofiltration is introduced. Cake resistance is applied to both cake and membrane. To validate the new techniques, results of crossflow microfiltration are compared to theoretical results and results of two crossflow nanofiltration cases are compared to experimental data. In addition, the new techniques are applied to dead end filtration to observe the different structure of the cake and explore the effect of resistance on velocity profile.

Hydrogel polymers have been the subject of many studies, due to their fascinating ability to alternate between being hydrophilic and hydrophobic, upon the application of appropriate stimuli. In particular, thermo-responsive hydrogels such as N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), which possess a unique lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32°C, have been leveraged for membrane-based processes such as using NIPAM as a draw agent for forward osmosis (FO) desalination. The low LCST temperature of NIPAM ensures that fresh water can be recovered, at a modest energy cost as compared to other thermally based desalination processes which require water recovery at higher temperatures. This work studies by experimentation, key process parameters involved in desalination by FO using NIPAM and a copolymer of NIPAM and Sodium Acrylate (NIPAM-SA). It encompasses synthesis of the hydrogels, development of experiments to effectively characterize synthesized products, and the measuring of FO performance for the individual hydrogels. FO performance was measured using single layers of NIPAM and NIPAM-SA respectively. The values of permeation flux obtained were compared to relevant published literature and it was found to be within reasonable range. Furthermore, a conceptual design for future large-scale implementation of this technology is proposed. It is proposed that perhaps more effort should focus on physical processes that have the ability to increase the low permeation flux of hydrogel driven FO desalination systems, rather than development of novel classes of hydrogels

The construction industry is very mundane and tiring for workers without the assistance of machines. This challenge has changed the trend of construction industry tremendously by motivating the development of robots that can replace human workers. This thesis presents a computed torque controller that is designed to produce movements by a small-scale, 5 degree-of-freedom (DOF) robotic arm that are useful for construction operations, specifically bricklaying. A software framework for the robotic arm with motion and path planning features and different control capabilities has also been developed using the Robot Operating System (ROS).

First, a literature review of bricklaying construction activity and existing robots’ performance is discussed. After describing an overview of the required robot structure, a mathematical model is presented for the 5-DOF robotic arm. A model-based computed torque controller is designed for the nonlinear dynamic robotic arm, taking into consideration the dynamic and kinematic properties of the arm. For sustainable growth of this technology so that it is affordable to the masses, it is important that the energy consumption by the robot is optimized. In this thesis, the trajectory of the robotic arm is optimized using sequential quadratic programming. The results of the energy optimization procedure are also analyzed for different possible trajectories.

A construction testbed setup is simulated in the ROS platform to validate the designed controllers and optimized robot trajectories on different experimental scenarios. A commercially available 5-DOF robotic arm is modeled in the ROS simulators Gazebo and Rviz. The path and motion planning is performed using the Moveit-ROS interface and also implemented on a physical small-scale robotic arm. A Matlab-ROS framework for execution of different controllers on the physical robot is described. Finally, the results of the controller simulation and experiments are discussed in detail.

are the Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures like Schwarz D, Schwarz

P, Gyroid, etc. These structures are self-sustaining, i.e. they require minimal supports

or no supports at all when 3D printed. These structures exist in stable form in

nature, like butterfly wings are made of Gyroids. Automotive and aerospace industry

have a growing demand for strong and light structures, which can be solved using

TPMS models. In this research we will try and understand some of the properties of

these Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures and see how they perform

in comparison to the conventional models. The research was concentrated on the

mechanical, thermal and fluid flow properties of the Schwarz D, Gyroid and Spherical

Gyroid Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) models in particular, other Triply

Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) models were not considered. A detailed finite

element analysis was performed on the mechanical and thermal properties using ANSYS

19.2 and the flow properties were analyzed using ANSYS Fluent under different

conditions.

In these times of increasing industrialization, there arises a need for effective and energy efficient heat transfer/heat exchange devices. The focus nowadays is on identifying various methods and techniques which can aid the process of developing energy efficient devices. One of the most common heat transfer devices is a heat exchanger. Heat exchangers are an essential commodity to any industry and their efficiency can play an important role in making industries energy efficient and reduce the energy losses in the devices, in turn decreasing energy inputs to run the industry.

One of the ways in which we can improve the efficiency of heat exchangers is by applying ultrasonic energy to a heat exchanger. This research explores the possibility of introducing the external input of ultrasonic energy to increase the efficiency of the heat exchanger. This increase in efficiency can be estimated by calculating the parameters important for the characterization of a heat exchanger, which are effectiveness (ε) and overall heat transfer coefficient (U). These parameters are calculated for both the non-ultrasound and ultrasound conditions in the heat exchanger.

This a preliminary study of ultrasound and its effect on a conventional shell-and-coil heat exchanger. From the data obtained it can be inferred that the increase in effectiveness and overall heat transfer coefficient upon the application of ultrasound is 1% and 6.22% respectively.

Basilisk lizards are often studied for their unique ability to run across the surface of

water. Due to the complicated fluid dynamics of this process, the forces applied on the

water’s surface cannot be measured using traditional methods. This thesis presents a

novel technique of measuring the forces using a fluid dynamic force platform (FDFP),

a light, rigid box immersed in water. This platform, along with a motion capture

system, can be used to characterize the kinematics and dynamics of a basilisk lizard

running on water. This could ultimately lead to robots that can run on water in a

similar manner.
