Soccer is bar none, the most popular sport in the entire world. It is played, followed, and loved by virtually every single country on Earth. Despite this massive support for the sport which houses some of the world’s biggest names in the world, its shortcomings when dealing with issues of racial injustice and incidents of racist behavior have become more pronounced in recent years. Although this open discussion regarding racism within the sport has recently begun to sprout, its roots can be tied back to decades ago while continuing to the present day, with players, referees, coaches, fans, commentators, and more all involved on both sides of the issue.
We found this topic to be most prevalent in today’s society after witnessing multiple shameful racist incidents that have occurred to some of the world’s biggest players throughout European football in 2019, as well as the recent ongoing fight for racial reform and increased awareness regarding racial injustice in the United States. By doing comprehensive research and
analysis on such incidents that have occurred throughout the years we hope to raise more
awareness regarding this subject that has plagued the beautiful game. In addition, we hope to
offer ways to remedy the problem one step at a time, all while answering the tough, but necessary questions regarding what specifically should be done in the sport, that others have been afraid to talk about for far too long. Specifically, we wanted to mainly highlight the experience of black players, with a further discussion on other minority groups, in English and Italian football as these two leagues have been a part of the largest debate between how club traditions, player-fan interactions, league policies, and staff management have all affected the way we view the game as the endemic of racism within the sport is exacerbated.

The beautiful game is unpredictable. Arguably half of soccer is entirely out of our control, instead being determined by a simple concept: luck. But what of the other 50%? Ultimately, the goal of the rapidly-advancing technologies and analytics in on-field sports performance is to maximize the elements that we \u2014 the coaches, players, decision-makers, and analysts \u2014 truly control. Once perceived as too mathematical and systemized, contradicting coaches' intuitions, sports sciences are burgeoning in the sports arena both in applied and mainstream popularity. While the industry has its critics and is far shy of its pinnacle, its advancements and successes cannot be ignored. From the training ground to match day decision-making, analytics are embedded in soccer and sport. Technology and analytics are vastly utilized throughout sporting organizations across a myriad of sports and purposes: scouting and drafting, fan experience, ticketing, etc. However, while these areas must be addressed in discussing the success of analytics in assessing situations and reducing uncertainty, my central thesis relates to the technological capabilities and corresponding analytical tools utilized to identify, assess, and improve on-field soccer performance: match analysis. This paper's core focuses on optimizing performance in soccer players in three specific areas of performance: technical abilities and tactics, physiology, and neuroscience.

Who would imagine that playing games is considered as a sport and became one of the most popular sports in the world? Who would imagine that over 100 million people watch someone else playing a game 10 years ago? Maybe even 5 years ago a lot of people did not believe that many people were watching one Esports championship series in the world in 2019. I believe that most people would not believe that fact. Nowadays the gaming industry has become 134 billion dollars industry (Warman), but most of the general public does not even know that Esports is a globally popular sport. The uniqueness of Esports is that fans are located everywhere in the world, unlike American football. This sport’s popularity is borderless and there are not that many sports leagues that have a huge global fan population in the sports industry. The reason Esports was able to capture popularity from everywhere in this world is because the gaming community is often beyond the border. For example, a person who lives in South Korea is teaming up with a man whom he has never met in person before and fighting against the players who are living on the other side of the world in a single match. This is how modern gaming society is. Those players are physically existing in different places, but there is no border that exists in this gaming virtual world and people are playing in the same match with the players who live in different places. This is one thing that we are not able to see in the traditional sports and the biggest strength of the Esports. The uniqueness of Esports is that all the players do not need to physically get together to play a game. If you want to play soccer, obviously all the 22 players need to be in the same field physically. People do not have a sense of local attachment from the beginning in the world of modern Esports because the gaming community is existing in the virtual world and the border does not exist in this virtual community. This unique environment is one of the biggest factors that makes Esports the fastest growing sport in the entire sports industry these days, and this rapid growth is supported by those younger gamers. Esports is still a new sport compared to other traditional sports, so they will follow a similar or different path that traditional sports took and will be part of those popular leagues in the future.

Our thesis brought forth the question, how would the implementation of a salary cap into the English Premier League influence the entertainment level of the league as well as the financial aspects of the league. The English Premier League currently has no salary cap which allows teams with billionaire owners to heavily spend on star players and training facilities. This makes it extremely difficult for small market teams to be able to compete for silverware when put up against these high spending clubs. There is also a huge financial issue with a lot of clubs in the EPL because many of them are heavily in debt and rely constantly on loans from financial groups to support their high cash outflow. We hypothesized that this implementation of the cap would help teams become more financially stable as well as creating more parity in the league. To test these assumptions we issued a survey which asked various questions regarding what people preferred when watching a sporting league. We then ran a simulation on the video game FIFA 19 with our own created salary cap which we developed to see if the implementation of the cap would create more parity in the league. To test the validity of the simulation on the video game, we ran simulations on last years FIFA 18 and compared it with the actual standings of the league season from that year. According to our simulation, the EPL would be a much more competitive league with more exciting games and more chance for the smaller market teams to compete for the lucrative positions in the league table. We also compared the financial successes of the NBA versus the EPL to see if the cap has been beneficiary to the NBA since its’ adoption in the early 80’s. We concluded that the implementation of the salary cap would make the league more exciting as well as having the ability to make the clubs more financially stable.

The landscape of professional sporting venues within the United States is changing. From 1990-2018, within the four main American professional sports leagues, 20 new NHL arenas, 24 new NBA arenas, 22 new NFL stadiums, and 26 new MLB stadiums were built. As the industry morphs, a handful of new initiatives are being worked into the construct of these venues including increased commercial areas for shopping and restaurants and sharing of the venues between two organizations in an attempt to increase the overall utilization of the spaces. Additionally, in Detroit, San Francisco and Atlanta, where new stadiums and arenas were just recently introduced, the municipalities are using the venues to catalyze further growth and development within the city. However, these trends, while innovative, are tethered to high prices.
This thesis seeks to analyze the changes in how current stadiums are being funded, the public’s reaction to and perception of those financing plans and what the future might hold. Research showed that tax dollars are increasingly unpopular and teams are moving away from using public money to fund sports venues. Gathered for this report, survey data of 815 Arizona State University students supported anecdotal evidence that people within a community are relatively unhappy with the idea of their money being used to partially subsidize wealthy sports organizations’ infrastructure. Altogether, recent evidence suggests that multi-use facilities funded in majority by private wealth are more popular and generate greater economic impact for the municipality than earlier in history, when heavily subsidized venues allowed teams to take advantage of local government and created fan mistrust.

As a relatively new industry in the sports business world, much on Esports consumer behavior patterns remain unexplored. Previous studies have aimed to provide a clear and coherent picture of different Esports fan demographics, understand consumption habits and psychological tendencies of these groups, and forecast financial and statistical trends for the Esports industry in the future. This thesis works to elaborate on these previous studies through quantitative research via a comprehensive online questionnaire. This research is focused on investigating three topics of interest within the consumer behavior realm of the Esports industry. First, to provide a meaningful and useful segmentation of fans within the industry, offering potential sponsors a closer look at how to approach each segment with future advertising and/or messaging. Second, to monitor how the playing habits of gamers impact what content and which creators they choose to stream online. Third, to explore the level of influence (through sponsorships, messaging, etc.) video game content creators and Esports athletes have on particular types of consumers.
With the data gathered from this research, both endemic and non-endemic brands looking to enter the Esports sponsorship space will be able to make informed decisions on which marketing decisions make the most sense financially and demographically. Furthermore, brands will be able to use this data to ensure a clear and consistent message across all platforms in future marketing campaigns.

Social media has grown into one of the most popular tools in the marketing industry. As social media continues to evolve, it allows for even greater transparency, communication, and relationships among users and businesses. There is no doubting that social media is an effective way to foster brand loyalty and a community of brand advocates, however successful social media marketing requires a depth of knowledge, understanding of the market, and an established strategy. Social media has been extremely effective in sports business as it allows organizations to create a community for their fans where they can find real-time news, promotions, content, and information about their favorite teams. As an intern for the New York Mets tasked with covering the Arizona Fall League, my experience provided first-hand insight into the use of social media in the MLB. Through an analysis of the New York Mets social media strategy, this thesis discusses the effectiveness of social media as a marketing strategy, best practices, and current trends to provide a well-rounded analysis of the successful implementation of this tool.

The purpose of this project was to create a brand identity for an expansion Major League Soccer team in Arizona. We identified and analyzed the numerous components that combine to create a sports brand, as well as a brand's impact on a soccer club's location and community. We determined that visual identity is the dominant aspect of a sports brand that is designed, and we limited our work accordingly. We defined the visual brand identity as being made up of the color palette, team name, logo, typography, and uniforms of a prospective soccer club. In order to create a strong brand, we chose to develop four unique visual identities and gain feedback from an expert panel of trusted colleagues to select a preferred brand. Using panel responses allowed us to identify the brand that most excited and captivated existing Arizona sports fans, thus ensuring the selected brand would be successful when implemented. The creation of each brand identity was constrained by four assumptions. These limitations were inspired by research of the current Arizona sports landscape and Major League Soccer branding, and ensured that our four proposed visual identities successfully assimilated into Arizona and MLS. After presenting our brand proposals to our expert panel, we learned that the AZFC brand proposal had the most popular assets, yet the Arizona SC brand proposal was the most popular overall. From this we discovered that providing a connection between brand and location is critical in order to capture attention. We also learned that this connection must be applied across a unified brand identity, rather than being expressed through individual assets.

As the third-largest source of revenue, sponsorships play an integral role in the world of sports business. Sports are the fastest growing category among all sponsorship spending, with the North American sports sponsorship revenue expected to grow to $18.7 billion in 2020. Identified as the most valuable benefit for sponsors, category exclusivity rights allow a sponsor to be the only company in a certain category to have an official relationship with the property. However, the popularity of category exclusivity has been declining due to the high fee associated with it. This has led to sports properties splitting up previously exclusive category to allow multiple partners to hold rights. As a result, sponsors are finding exclusivity rights at a smaller level: specific marketing platforms. This strategy permits only one corporate partner to activate in a specified channel. Although not as prominent as in professional sports, category exclusivity is still a key factor in collegiate athletics sponsorships. Sponsors concentrate mainly on creating brand awareness as college students are at the age where they begin to make their own decisions. By increasing brand awareness, these companies are also increasing the probability that the students will purchase from it, and eventually become loyal, long-term consumers. As an intern for Sun Devil Athletics Corporate Partnerships, my experience guided me through a study of the exclusive sponsorships of Sun Devil Athletics. Through an analysis of ASU students' attitudes toward and knowledge of the official sponsors of Sun Devil Athletics, this thesis discusses the effectiveness of the exclusive sponsorships with a special focus on how being aware of a company's relationship to ASU affects students' intent to purchase that company's products or services.
