This creative project is assembled in screenplay format, providing the blueprint for a feature film. The research consisted of reading numerous screenplays, breaking down movies scene by scene, and undergoing a rigorous revision process with Thesis Director Professor Greg Bernstein. The logline of Changing Tides is: After discovering a gold-filled shipwreck, five Floridian middle schoolers head out to claim their treasure when they learn that the largest hurricane ever recorded is heading their way.
The medium of film and television has become more prevalent in society than ever before. It pushes the boundaries of what technology can do and what realities mankind can explore. However, with their rapid expansion, the bounds by which society deems this medium as ethical or unethical, simplified as real or fiction, has become a lot hazier, daresay, inconsequential. While some facets of the medium strive and continue to focus on ethical practices (such as documentary work), others base their work loosely on those real experiences (e.g. “Based on a True Story”) or are wholly exaggerated or fabricated. With this in mind, it probes the question: Does research have a place in nonfiction storytelling? This thesis explores this premise, arguing that the more a story is researched and truthful to its subject matter, the better and more entertaining it will become.
"After his fiancé's sudden death, a medic-in-training becomes targeted by a spirit with the ability to manipulate thoughts." The compelling question of Something Beautiful is, “What is the price of clinging to internal perceptions?” The central idea of this project is to create a story about a character whose internal conflicts surrounding an event, in this case his boyfriend’s death, end up creating an environment in which those internal perceptions and his adherence to them lead to a potential downfall. Throughout my college experience, almost all of my open-ended work has involved some psychological aspect. The idea of one’s view and experience being vastly different from the truth, with little way of knowing, fascinates me. It’s a powerful way of assembling a story and an inherently nontraditional way of depicting things – one I’ve found works. The brain is a maze and there are countless engaging, innovative ways to depict this maze. The result of this project will be a 10–15-minute festival-ready short film exploring the themes discussed above. Production was a difficult process outside of the capstone system, and editing is underway as of April 2022, with a full release and festival run planned for the summer.
This creative project is centered around the development and pitch of a 10-hour TV series consisting of story and character documents, pitch deck and pitch script; a full length draft of the series pilot is included. Development of the series' story and characters were done alongside Thesis Director Peter Murrieta.
