The hypothalamus pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis and the human genome are important components of the biological etiology of externalizing disorders. By studying the associations between specific genetic variants, diurnal cortisol, and externalizing symptoms we can begin to unpack this complex etiology. It was hypothesized that genetic variants from the corticotropine releasing hormone receptor 1 (CRHR1), FK506 binding protein 51 (FKBP5), catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT), and dopamine transporter (DAT1) genes and diurnal cortisol intercepts and slopes would separately predict externalizing symptoms. It was also hypothesized that genetic variants would moderate the association between cortisol and externalizing. Participants were 800 twins (51% boys), 88.5% Caucasian, M=7.93 years (SD=0.87) participating in the Wisconsin Twin Project. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to separate the variance associated with state and trait cortisol measured across three consecutive days and trait cortisol measures were used. There were no main effects of genes on externalizing symptoms. The evening cortisol intercept, the morning cortisol slope and the evening cortisol slope predicted externalizing, but only in boys, such that boys with higher cortisol and flatter slopes across the day also had more externalizing symptoms. The morning cortisol intercept and CRHR1 rs242924 interacted to predict externalizing in both boys and girls, with GG carriers significantly higher compared to TT carriers at one standard deviation below the mean of morning cortisol. For boys only there was a significant interaction between the DAT1 variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) and the afternoon slope and a significant slope for 9/9 carriers and 9/10 carriers such that when the slope was more steep, boys carrying a nine had fewer externalizing symptoms but when the slope was less steep, they had more. Results confirm a link between diurnal trait cortisol and externalizing in boys, as well as moderation of that association by genetic polymorphisms. This is the first study to empirically examine this association and should encourage further research on the biological etiology of externalizing disorder symptoms.

Prior research has established a relation between parenting behaviors and symptoms of child psychopathology, and this association may be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Gene-environment correlation, or the influence of a child’s genes on the environment they receive, represents one possible mechanism through which genes and environment combine to influence child outcomes. This study examined evocative gene-environment correlation in the relation between parenting and symptoms of child psychopathology in a sample of 676 twins (51.5% female, 58.5% Caucasian, 23.7% Hispanic/Latinx, primarily middle class, MAge=8.43, SD=.62) recruited from Arizona birth records. Using univariate ACE twin biometric models, genetic influences were found to moderately contribute to internalizing symptoms (A=.47, C=.25, E=.28), while externalizing (A=.86, E=.14) and ADHD (A=.84, E=.16) symptoms were found to be highly heritable. The genetic influences for positive (C=.54, E=.46) and negative (C=.44, E=.56) parenting were smaller and found to be nonsignificant. The correlations between parenting and types of psychopathology were examined and bivariate Cholesky decompositions were conducted for statistically significant correlations. Negative parenting was moderately positively correlated with externalizing and ADHD symptoms; the relation between externalizing symptoms and negative parenting was found to be due to shared genetics, whereas the relation between negative parenting and ADHD symptoms was due to the shared environment. The mixed results regarding the role of gene environment correlation in relations between parenting and child psychopathology indicate that further research on the mechanisms of this relation is needed.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between extracurricular activities and self-regulation in 400 five year old twin children. Extracurricular activities were assessed using the Health and Behavior Questionnaire, and self-regulation was assessed using the Children's Behavior Questionnaire. While there initially was a significant correlation between extracurricular activities and self-regulation, that correlation became non-significant when controlling for SES and sex in a mixed model regression model. Nearly all of the children who did not participate in extracurricular activities came from lower SES families, leading to a lack of a "control group" for the high SES families. When only taking into account the lower SES half of the sample, the correlation between extracurricular activities and self-regulation became stronger and the correlation between SES and self-regulation became non-significant. Extracurricular activities do appear to promote self-regulation in children coming from low SES families, yet their effects on children coming from high SES families is still unknown.

Various physical and psychological forms of development take place during the transition from childhood to adolescence, including the onset of puberty, delayed sleep-wake behavior patterns, and increases in internalizing symptomatology. Theory suggests that pubertal processes influence the onset of internalizing symptoms, and this association may differ between boys and girls.

Various physical and psychological forms of development take place during the transition from childhood to adolescence, including the onset of puberty, delayed sleep-wake behavior patterns, and increases in internalizing symptomatology. Theory suggests that pubertal processes influence the onset of internalizing symptoms, and this association may differ between boys and girls. The contextual amplification hypothesis suggests that pubertal development interacts with contextual or dispositional factors to impact risk for psychopathology. Family stress and peer stress are two critical factors during early adolescence that have potential moderating effects on the association between pubertal development and internalizing symptoms. In line with the biopsychosocial framework, the current study examined various psychosocial (e.g., family stress, peer stress) and biological (e.g., sleep, genetics) factors that may have effects on the puberty-internalizing relation. Participants were a racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of twins who were part of an ongoing longitudinal study (N=818 children; Arizona Twin Project; Lemery-Chalfant et al. 2019). The current study examined the association between puberty and internalizing symptoms, with stress (i.e., family, peer) as potential moderators, and sleep indicators (i.e., objective and self-reported sleep) as potential mediators. Behavior genetic analyses explored the moderated heritability of family stress on internalizing symptoms. Findings revealed that greater pubertal development predicted higher internalizing symptoms in boys, but not girls. For girls, peer stress interacted with pubertal development to predict internalizing symptoms, but simple slopes were not significant. Sleep indicators were not significant mediators between pubertal development and internalizing symptoms for boys or girls. Univariate twin models revealed environmental influences on internalizing symptoms, and both genetic and environmental influences on peer stress. Family stress did not significantly moderate the genetic and environmental influences of internalizing symptoms.

Chronic pain is among the most prevalent health issues experienced by older adults and negatively impacts daily functioning and psychosocial well-being through mechanisms that include energy depletion, pain interference, and pain-related changes in negative affect. The capacities to be aware of and regulate negative emotions play a critical role in the successful management of chronic pain. One dimension of negative emotion awareness, termed negative emotion differentiation (NED), is the ability to discriminate between negative affective experiences and recognize them as discrete categories. The ability to identify and distinguish between the various emotions that accompany pain flares and other stressors may enhance the precision of the individual’s regulatory efforts. In doing so, NED may be one possible resilience resource that can facilitate adaptive functioning in the context of chronic pain by buffering the effects of chronic pain flares on daily interpersonal stress. However, this has not yet been investigated. The current study aimed to examine the moderating effect of trait NED on the relationship between daily pain and same-day stress in 259 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) or fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Individuals completed daily diaries each evening for 30 days reporting on average daily pain, negative emotions, interpersonal stress, and depressive symptoms. It was hypothesized that higher levels of NED would buffer the effects of daily pain on same-day stress. In exploratory analyses, it was evaluated whether the buffering effects were larger for individuals with FMS versus OA. Results of multilevel models revealed that, as expected, higher levels of trait NED predicted lower levels of same-day negative interpersonal events and perceived interpersonal stress. Trait NED also moderated the relationship between pain-related increases in same-day perceived interpersonal stress. Additionally, findings indicated that NED was similarly important for those with FMS and OA. Taken together, the current findings suggest that NED is an important resilience trait that can attenuate chronic pain-related increases in daily experiences of interpersonal stress.

Negative Urgency and Positive Urgency are important subfacets of a propensity to rash action. There is currently limited research on parental antecedents of Negative Urgency and Positive Urgency. The current study investigated whether parent personality and parenting behaviors predict adolescent Negative Urgency and Positive Urgency. Data were taken from a community sample with parent personality, positive parenting behaviors, and child Negative Urgency and Positive Urgency measured at separate timepoints. Structural equation models were used to examine whether parent personality predicted adolescent Negative Urgency and Positive Urgency and whether positive parenting mediated this relationship. There was no evidence for a relationship between parent personality and children’s Negative Urgency and Positive Urgency. In addition, there was no relationship between parenting behaviors and child Negative and Positive Urgency in cross-reporter models, but child-reported parenting predicted later adolescent-reported Negative and Positive Urgency. Greater positive parenting, as perceived by children, was related to less Negative and Positive Urgency when they were adolescents. More research is needed to understand whether the current results are due to reporter bias or whether child-perceived parenting behaviors influence the development of adolescent Negative and Positive Urgency.

Aggressive and violent behavior is expressed differently across development, but for some adolescents, this behavior leads to criminal justice involvement through arrests and incarceration. Further, according to the biopsychosocial model, aggressive behavior is influenced by both genetics and the environment. This study sought to examine the differential impacts of early childhood environmental cumulative risk and genetic risk on the developmental cascade from middle childhood behavioral aggression and lack of control to adolescent antisocial behavior or callous-unemotional traits, to emerging adult involvement with the criminal justice system, and whether the effects of risk were mitigated by receiving the Family Check-Up (FCU) prevention program in childhood. The sample included high-risk youth (N = 731; 50% female, 50% White, 28% Black, 13% Hispanic, 9% Indigenous, Native Hawaiian, or Asian; of these 13% were multiracial; Mincome = $28,993; representative 515 genotyped) involved in a randomized-controlled trial of the Family Check-Up and followed longitudinally across 11 waves from ages 2 through 19 years. Behavioral measures included parent-report of behavioral aggression and observational lack of control in middle childhood, self-report of antisocial behavior and callous-unemotional (CU) traits in adolescence, and self-report of involvement with the legal system at age 19. Results of longitudinal structural equation modeling (SEM) supported a developmental cascade from middle childhood behavioral aggression to antisocial behavior in adolescence to legal system involvement. Early cumulative environmental risk and polygenic risk tolerance (RT PGS) significantly predicted involvement with the legal system at age 19, while RT PGS also predicted antisocial behavior in adolescence. Further, intervention effects were found for the FCU, such that the FCU disrupted the effects of RT PGS and middle childhood aggression on antisocial behavior and CU traits in adolescence. This study showed that the FCU can mitigate polygenic risk, supporting the benefit of early psychosocial prevention programs. Importantly, this study showed initial evidence that prevention programs targeting early childhood conduct problems could potentially reduce rates of justice system involvement, including arrests and incarceration, by the age of 19.

Chronic pain is common during childhood and has negative immediate and long-term implications for physical and mental health. Prior research points to physical activity and sleep as protective health-promoting behaviors predicting lower chronic pain intensity and disability during adulthood. No study has yet examined the interaction of physical activity and sleep parameters in prediction of chronic pain in a community sample of children. Guided by the biopsychosocial model of pediatric chronic pain, this study explored objectively assessed physical activity and sleep patterns at age 8 as predictors of childhood chronic pain at age 9 in a racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of 896 twins participating in the longitudinal Arizona Twin Project. It was hypothesized that parameters of physical activity levels and sleep health would independently predict chronic pain one year later, and that sleep parameters would moderate the association between physical activity and chronic pain. Monthly chronic pain was common, with 57.1% of participants reporting at least one pain location. Headaches, stomachaches, and backaches were the most frequent chronic pain presentations. Participants exceeded physical activity guidelines but did not meet sleep recommendations for their age group. Multilevel modeling analyses revealed that physical activity and sleep parameters at age 8 did not predict chronic pain one year later, and that sleep parameters did not moderate the associations between physical activity and chronic pain. The present study provides evidence that the associations between objectively assessed physical activity and sleep and chronic pain are not yet evident during middle childhood in this community sample compared to patient samples who have existing pain, suggesting that these health behaviors may play distinct roles in pain development versus pain management. They also point to the need to pinpoint the time frame during which these health behaviors become relevant and potentially interact to predict chronic pain development and maintenance. Longitudinal research tracking these health behaviors and pain using both subjective and objective methods as children transition into and through adolescence can help to identify optimal developmental stages at which to target prevention and intervention efforts to promote long term health.

This study aimed to utilize multiple informant reports to examine whether effortful control (EC) varies across the home and school context among ethnically diverse adolescents attending middle schools in low-income communities and how patterns of variation across context are differentiated by measures of academic functioning and risky behavior. 763 adolescents (50.2% male; Mage = 12 years), their primary caregivers, and two teachers completed measures of adolescents’ EC. Adolescents reported on aspects of academic functioning and risky behavior. Archival data on grade point average (GPA) were collected from schools and adolescents completed the Go/No-Go computer task. Latent profile analysis revealed three reporting patterns: Equal at Home and School (EHS; 43%), Higher at Home and Lower at School (HHLS; 35%), and Lower at Home and Higher at School (LHHS; 22%). Relative to EHS adolescents, HHLS adolescents were less likely to have greater levels of self-reported EC and LHHS adolescents were more likely to have greater self-reported levels of EC. Regarding academic functioning, compared to the EHS adolescents, HHLS adolescents were less likely to have a higher and LHHS adolescents were more likely to have a higher accuracy rate on the Go/No-Go task and have a higher GPA. Compared to HHLS adolescents, LHHS adolescents were more likely to have a higher accuracy rate and a higher GPA. Further, compared to EHS adolescents, HHLS adolescents were more likely to have higher levels of externalizing behavior and the LHHS adolescents were less likely to have higher levels of externalizing behavior. Compared to HHLS adolescents, LHHS adolescents were less likely to have higher levels of externalizing behavior. This study highlights the importance of considering context in the study of EC and the potential use of multiple informants to identify meaningful variation across contexts. In addition, findings from this study can help inform decision-making in prevention and intervention efforts in support of academic outcomes for marginalized youth.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder categorized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity. The onset of ADHD symptoms begin to appear in childhood, tend to be persistent into adulthood, and are associated with adverse physical and mental health outcomes (Caye et al., 2016; Yoshimasu et al., 2018).

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder categorized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity. The onset of ADHD symptoms begin to appear in childhood, tend to be persistent into adulthood, and are associated with adverse physical and mental health outcomes (Caye et al., 2016; Yoshimasu et al., 2018). The current study examined the effects of health-promoting behavior (i.e., diet and physical activity) on ADHD symptoms in middle childhood. The sample consisted of 670 twins (30.1% monozygotic, 36.5% same-sex dizygotic, 32.3% opposite-sex dizygotic) from the ongoing longitudinal study, the Arizona Twin Project. The twin’s (51% female) diet, physical activity, and ADHD symptoms were assessed at age 8 (M = 8.45, SD = 0.69) and ADHD symptoms were assessed again at age 9 (M = 9.70, SD = 0.92). Mixed model regression analyses revealed that aspects of diet (i.e., protein, carbohydrates, and fiber) at age 8 negatively predicted ADHD symptoms at age 9. Similarly, sedentary behavior at age 8 negatively predicted ADHD symptoms at age 9, whereas moderate-to-vigorous activity at age 8 positively predicted ADHD symptoms at age 9. Univariate twin analyses revealed that certain aspects of diet (i.e., sugar, vegetable, and fruit consumption) were influenced by environmental factors whereas other aspects of diet (i.e., protein, carbohydrates, calories, fat, and fiber consumption) were influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Both children’s sedentary behavior and moderate-to-vigorous activity were influenced primarily by genetic factors, with the remaining variance being attributed to non-shared environmental factors. Additive genetic influences explained the majority of the variance in ADHD symptoms. Future research should examine bidirectional effects of activity and diet on ADHD symptoms across childhood.
