Transgender populations display disproportionately poorer health outcomes compared to the general population. On average, these populations tend to experience decreased well-being in part through increased mental health concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression) and poorer physical and behavioral health status. Understanding the process by which these deleterious outcomes occur for this population is integral to developing interventions. This thesis aimed to examine whether experiences of gender dysphoria and body dissatisfaction influenced the association of felt pressure to conform to gender norms with mental health and quality of life outcomes. Specifically, I hypothesized that greater pressure to conform to gender norms would be directly related to worse mental health and quality of life outcomes, and that gender dysphoria and body dissatisfaction would indirectly mediate this relationship. Furthermore, I hypothesized that participants' gender identity would moderate this relationship, such that transgender individuals would show stronger associations on all pathways as compared to cisgender individuals. The sample consisted of 211 individuals – 109 being transgender and 102 being cisgender. Participants completed a 15-minute online survey including a consent form. Results indicated partial support of hypotheses – pressure to conform to gender norms directly predicted outcomes of compromised mental health (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress), but did not predict well-being or quality of life. Furthermore, gender dysphoria (but not body dissatisfaction) mediated the relationship between felt pressure for gender conformity and compromised mental health outcomes for cisgender participants, but unexpectedly not for transgender participants. Post hoc analyses suggest that perceived discrimination mediated the relation between felt pressure and all mental health measures and quality of life measures for both transgender and cisgender participants.

ABSTRACTWith the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Psyche Mission, humans will soon have the first opportunity to explore a new kind of planetary body: one composed mostly of metal as opposed to stony minerals or ices. Identifying the composition of asteroids from Earth-based observations has been an ongoing challenge. Although optical reflectance spectra, radar, and orbital dynamics can constrain an asteroid’s mineralogy and bulk density, in many cases there is not a clear or precise match with analogous materials such as meteorites. Additionally, the surfaces of asteroids and other small, airless planetary bodies can be heavily modified over geologic time by exposure to the space environment. To accurately interpret remote sensing observations of metal-rich asteroids, it is therefore necessary to understand how the processes active on asteroid surfaces affect metallic materials. This dissertation represents a first step toward that understanding. In collaboration with many colleagues, I have performed laboratory experiments on iron meteorites to simulate solar wind ion irradiation, surface heating, micrometeoroid bombardment, and high-velocity impacts. Characterizing the meteorite surface’s physical and chemical properties before and after each experiment can constrain the effects of each process on a metal-rich surface in space. While additional work will be needed for a complete understanding, it is nevertheless possible to make some early predictions of what (16) Psyche’s surface regolith might look like when humans observe it up close. Moreover, the results of these experiments will inform future exploration beyond asteroid Psyche as humans attempt to understand how Earth’s celestial neighborhood came to be.

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people experience elevated rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to transphobic violence, discrimination, microaggressions, and minority stress. Oppression against TNB people could also contribute to complex post-traumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD) symptoms, which arises due to exposure to prolonged and repeated trauma from a state of subordination. Nonbinary people in particular experience unique chronic minority stressors (e.g., misgendering, interpersonal invalidation) because of the assumption that gender is inherently binary. These chronic minority stressors threaten nonbinary people’s psychological and interpersonal senses of safety. This study aims to examine how misgendering and invalidation can predict PTSD and c-PTSD symptoms among nonbinary people and whether this association is moderated by pride and community connectedness. Cross-sectional data from 611 nonbinary people were analyzed using hierarchical linear regressions. Misgendering and invalidation were found to be significant predictors of PTSD and c-PTSD symptoms. However, pride and community connectedness were not significant moderators of these associations. Findings from this study contribute to the conceptualizations of traumatic stress among nonbinary people and provide considerations for more affirming trauma-informed care. Future research should explore how additional resilience factors may promote resilience and healing for nonbinary people coping with trauma.

Electrochemical technologies emerge as a feasible solution to monitor and treat pollutants. Although electrochemical technologies have garnered widespread attention, their commercial applications are still constrained by the use of expensive electrocatalysts, and the bulky and rigid plate design of electrodes that restricts electrochemical reactor design to systems with poor electrode surface/ volume treated ratios. By making electrodes flexible, more compact designs that maximize electrode surface per volume treated might become a reality. This dissertation encompasses the successful fabrication of flexible nanocomposite electrodes for electrocatalysis and electroanalysis applications.First, nano boron-doped diamond electrodes (BDD) were prepared as an inexpensive alternative to commercial boron-doped diamond electrodes. Comparative detailed surface and electrochemical characterization was conducted. Empirical study showed that replacing commercial BDD electrodes with nano-BDD electrodes can result in a cost reduction of roughly 1000x while maintaining the same electrochemical performance. Next, self-standing electrodes were fabricated through the electropolymerization of conducing polymer, polypyrrole. Surface characterizations, such as SEM, FTIR and XPS proved the successful fabrication of these self-standing electrodes. High mechanical stability and bending flexibility demonstrated the ability to use these electrodes in different designs, such as roll-to-roll membranes. Electrochemical nitrite reduction was employed to demonstrate the viability of using self-standing nanocomposite electrodes for electrocatalytic applications reducing hazardous nitrogen oxyanions (i.e., nitrite) towards innocuous species such as nitrogen gas. A high faradaic efficiency of 78% was achieved, with high selectivity of 91% towards nitrogen gas. To further enhance the conductivity and charge transfer properties of self-standing polypyrrole electrodes, three different nanoparticles, including copper (Cu), gold (Au), and platinum (Pt), were incorporated in the polypyrrole matrix. Effect of nanoparticle wt% and interaction between metal nanoparticles and polypyrrole matrix was investigated for electroanalytical applications, specifically dopamine sensing. Flexible nanocomposite electrodes showed outstanding performance as electrochemical sensors with PPy-Cu 120s exhibiting a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.19 µM and PPy-Au 120s exhibiting a high linear range of 5 µM - 300 µM. This dissertation outlines a method of fabricating self-standing electrodes and provides a pathway of using self-standing electrodes based on polypyrrole and polypyrrole-metal nanocomposites for various applications in wastewater treatment and electroanalytical sensing.

Perovskite solar cells are one of the rising stars in the solar cell industry. This thesis explores several approaches to enhance the properties of the perovskite layer and the solar cell devices in which they operate. They include studies of different antisolvent additives during spin coating of triple cation perovskites, the use of surfactants to improve the quality of perovskite film microstructures, the applicability of a new fabrication process, and the value of post-deposition thermal and chemical annealing processes.This thesis experimentally analyzes different antisolvents, viz., ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, toluene, and chlorobenzene. It focuses on the antisolvent-assisted crystallization method to achieve homogenous nucleation of the perovskite film. Of all the antisolvents, ethyl acetate-treated films gave the best-performing device, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 15.5%. This thesis also analyzes the effects of mixed antisolvents on the qualities of triple-cation perovskites. Different solution concentrations of chlorobenzene in ethyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol in ethyl acetate are optimized for optimal supersaturation to achieve enlarged perovskite grains. Evaluations are discussed in the context of solution polarity and boiling point of the antisolvents, where 25% chlorobenzene in ethyl acetate antisolvent mixture shows the best film properties. Another study discusses a new fabrication process called electrical field-assisted direct ink deposition for large-scale printing of perovskite solar cells. This process involves the formation of nanodroplets under an electrical field deposited onto ITO/glass substrates. As a result, smooth Poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate layers are ii produced with an average effective electrical resistivity of 4.15104  0.26 -m compared to that of spin-coated films. A successive chapter discusses the studies of the electrical field-assisted direct ink deposition of the photoactive CH3NH3PbI2 (MAPbI3) layer. Its focus is on the post-deposition chemical annealing of the MAPbI3 films in methylamine gas, termed as methylamine gas-assisted healing and growth of perovskite films. This treatment improved the smoothness, reduced porosity, increased density, and generated more uniform grain sizes. Moreover, it improved the inter-grain boundary contacts by eliminating secondary, fine-grained boundary structures. Mechanisms behind the initial liquefaction of the MAPbI3 film's subsequent re-solidification are discussed.

Emotions are an important part of persuasion. Experimental research suggests that White and male jurors can use emotion to increase their influence, while other jurors cannot. This research builds on prior research by examining the relationship between naturally occurring emotion during mock jury deliberations and the influence that jurors hold.

Emotions are an important part of persuasion. Experimental research suggests that White and male jurors can use emotion to increase their influence, while other jurors cannot. This research builds on prior research by examining the relationship between naturally occurring emotion during mock jury deliberations and the influence that jurors hold. Participants (N = 708) in 153 mock juries watched a murder trial video and deliberated on a verdict. Participants self-reported their experienced emotions and rated their perceptions of the other jurors’ emotion and influence. After data was collected, I extracted acoustic indicators of expressed emotion from each deliberation and used a speech emotion recognition model to classify each mock juror’s emotional expression. I hypothesized that there would be an overall effect of emotional expression on influence such that as mock jurors’ emotion increased, their influence would also increase. However, I hypothesized that a juror’s race and gender would moderate the relationship between emotion and influence such that White male jurors will be seen as more influential when they are more emotional, and that female jurors and jurors of color will be seen as less influential when they are more emotional. I also hypothesized that female jurors of color will be doubly penalized for being emotional, due to their “double-minority” status. Bayesian model averaging suggested that the data was most probable under models that included perceived emotion, race, and the interaction between the two, compared to models that did not. Consistent with the hypothesis, as participants were perceived as more emotional, their influence increased. In contrast to the hypotheses, being perceived as more emotional increased influence for both White and non-White mock jurors but the effect was stronger for non-White jurors. In other words, while all jurors benefited from being perceived as more emotional, non-White jurors benefited more than White jurors. Male jurors were more influential than female jurors, and gender did not interact with emotion.. Although being perceived as more emotional predicted increased influence for all participants, this research demonstrates that there are racial and gender disparities in the level of influence that someone might hold on a jury.

Both molecular structure of macromolecular materials and subsequent processing of these materials dictate resulting material properties. In this work novel synthetic strategies combined with detailed analytical methodology reveal fundamental structure-processing-property relationships in thermoplastic polyesters, thermoplastic polyurethanes, covalently crosslinked acetal functionalized networks, and small molecule surfactants. 4,4’ dimethyloxybisbenzoate afforded a series of novel polyester structures, and the incorporation of this monomer both increased the Tg and decreased the crystallinity in cyclohexane dimethanol based polyesters. Solubility and dynamic light scattering experiments combined with oscillatory rheology techniques provided methodology to validate polyurethane extrusion in commercial polyurethanes. Acid catalyzed hydroxyl addition to vinyl ethers provided two families of acetal functionalized poly(ethylene glycol hydrogels). Stoichiometric control of binary thiol-acrylate polymerizations afforded hydrogels with both tunable mechanical properties and predictable degradation profiles. Following this work, a photoacid generator catalyzed cationic catalysis provided acetal functionalized organogels whose mechanical properties were predicted by excess vinyl ether monomers which underwent cationic polymerization under the same reaction conditions that yielded acetal functionalization. Time resolved FT-IR spectroscopy provided new understanding in hydroxyl vinyl ether reactions, where both hydroxyl addition to a vinyl ether and vinyl ether cationic polymerization occur concurrently. This work inspired research into new reactive systems for photobase generator applications. However, current photobase generator technologies proved incompatible for carbon-Michael reactions between acetoacetate and acrylate functionalities as a result of uncontrollable acrylate free radical polymerization. The fundamental knowledge and synthetic strategies afforded by these investigations were applied to small molecule surfactant systems for fire-fighting applications. Triethylsilyl-containing zwitterionic and cationic surfactants displayed surface tensions lower than hydrocarbon surfactants, but larger than siloxane-containing surfactants. For the first time, oscillatory rheology and polarized optical light imagine rheology highlighted shear-induced micelle alignment in triethylsilyl surfactants, which provided more stable foams than zwitterionic analogues. The knowledge gained from these investigations provided fundamental structure-processing-property relationships in small molecule surfactant solutions applied as fire-fighting foams. This discovery regarding the effect of self-assembled structures in foam solutions informs the design and analysis of next generation surfactants to replace fluorocarbon surfactants in fire-fighting foam applications.

The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether different types of narcissistic behavior are associated with different kinds of economic risk behavior. The thesis examines five published articles to establish whether the sub-classifications of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are significantly linked to economic risk behavior, broadly defined. The primary hypothesis states that different classifications of narcissistic behavior will be associated with different kinds of economic risk behavior. The paper finds, broadly, that different kinds of narcissistic behavior classifications are indeed associated with different kinds of economic risk behavior. Specifically, grandiose narcissism (GN) is associated with higher rates of risky gambling behavior; however, manifestations of vulnerable narcissism (VN) appear to play an integral role in the relationship. The paper also finds that both GN and VN are associated with higher rates of oniomania where mediating roles of impulsivity, materialism, and emptiness are present. The thesis concludes that addressing the issue of narcissism cannot be viewed through the lens of any unilateral perspective.

The primary objective of this dissertation is to advance the existing empirical literature on the relationship between transportation and quality of life, with a specific focus on wellbeing indicators and their applicability in the transportation sector. To achieve this, the dissertation is structured around four primary areas of inquiry. Firstly, it introduces a subjective wellbeing scoring method that generates episode-level wellbeing scores, which can be aggregated to produce daily person-level wellbeing scores. This method can be utilized as a post-processor of activity-based travel demand model outputs to assess equity implications in various planning scenarios. Secondly, the dissertation examines the intricate relationships between mobility poverty, time poverty, and subjective wellbeing. It compares the rates of time poverty and zero-trip making among different socio-demographic groups and evaluates their alignment with subjective wellbeing. Thirdly, this research investigates the association between automobile use and satisfaction with daily travel routines (thus, wellbeing). This analysis aims to provide an understanding of why automobile use remains the primary mode of transportation, despite attempts to shift towards alternative modes of transportation. The fourth area of investigation focuses on the wellbeing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the chapter examines the resurgence in travel and discretionary out-of-home activities, as well as the slow return of workers to workplaces by using the subjective wellbeing indicator and time poverty. Additionally, the chapter identifies groups that were disproportionately impacted and provides strategies to mitigate adverse consequences for vulnerable socio-economic and demographic groups in future disruptions. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the literature on transportation and quality of life by introducing a reliable subjective wellbeing scoring method that can be used to evaluate the quality of life implications of transportation systems. It also offers practical applications of wellbeing indicators in identifying differences in wellbeing across the population and provides opportunities for targeted interventions and the development of transportation policies to address equity and sustainability issues. Furthermore, to demonstrate the practicality of the generated knowledge in this dissertation, a web-based wellbeing platform is developed to track changes in the wellbeing of individuals that arise from their daily activity and travel patterns.

Social norms are unwritten behavioral codes. They direct individual behaviors, facilitate interpersonal coordination and cooperation, and lead to variation among human populations. Understanding how norms are maintained and how they change is critical for understanding human evolutionary psychology, social organization, and cultural change. This dissertation uses a mathematical model and a field study to answer two questions: First, what factors determine the content and dynamics of a social norm? Second, how do people make decisions in a normative context? The mathematical model finds that contrary to the popular belief that even arbitrary or deleterious social norms can be maintained once established because deviants suffer coordination failures and social sanctions, norms with continuously varying options cannot be maintained by the pressure to do what others do. Instead, continuous norms evolve to the optimum determined by environmental pressure, individual preferences, or cognitive processes. Therefore, the content of norms across human societies may be less historically constrained than previously assumed. The field study shows that unlike what rational choice theory predicts, people in a small-scale subsistence society do not calculate the ecological and social payoffs of different behaviors in a normative context, even when they have the information to do so. Instead, they rely heavily on social information about what others do. This decision-making algorithm, together with mental categorization that ignores small deviations, and cognitive biases that favor the division prescribed by the norm, maintain an ecologically inefficient and widely disliked cooperative surplus division norm in a Derung village, Dizhengdang, in Yunnan, China.
