This paper details the development of a six-week health education class for pregnant and parenting women recovering from substance abuse. The class was developed in collaboration with Student Health Outreach for Wellness (SHOW) Community Initiative, a student-run organization providing free healthcare to underserved populations, and with Crossroads, Inc., a licensed treatment provider serving men, women, and veterans recovering from addiction and substance use disorders. A needs assessment via personal interview was conducted to identify the demographics of the female residents at the Crossroads for Women treatment facility, the existing medical health promotional services, and the needed medical and health promotional services. The needs assessment identified the need for health education for pregnant and parenting women recovering from addiction. The SHOW Program Development Guide was utilized to develop the content for the classes based on the Health Belief Model theory. The Health Belief Model focuses on the beliefs and attitudes of individuals and altering them to make achieving good health more feasible (Hochbaum, Rosenstock, and Kegels, 1952). The program curriculum identifies potential perceived barriers to health and utilizes strategies to decrease the perceived barriers and increase perceived benefits. The six-week course was divided to address six different topics: 1. Introduction, 2. Physical Health, 3. Stress Management, 4. Nutrition, 5. Exercise, and 6. Conclusion and Discharge Planning. The class will be taught by a variety of health professional disciplines in accordance with the interprofessional practice theory, which utilizes two or more health professions to improve health outcomes. This project outlines all presentation materials, handouts, activities, and implementation recommendations required to produce a program that helps pregnant and parenting women on their road to recovery.

This creative project aims to explore how interactive bonding and imaginative play can be used as a potential coping mechanism for both children with chronic illness as well as their families. Research has shown that parents of children with chronic illness have higher psychological and emotional stress. They face the obstacles of long hospital stays, financial burdens, and fear of losing their loved one. Parents can also place blame on themselves for their child’s illness and wonder what they could have done to prevent the situation. Most parents dream of having a healthy, happy baby, so when their child has an unexpected illness, it can be emotionally overwhelming, and make it harder to connect with the child. It can also strain a relationship between a husband and wife. In addition, it was found that parent stress could hinder a child's ability to cope with their illness, affect their confidence, as well as their social and emotional development. Therapeutic play has been commonly used in pediatric hospital settings. Therapeutic play allows one to express their feelings, it provides a creative space for engagement that serves as a distraction from the medical world, and it enhances development. The hope of this study is to find a way to use creative play and “artmaking” to create a safe, fun, and open space for the child and caregivers to connect and identify their emotions. The study is ongoing, so this paper will provide the process of the research.

The Wonderbox research project was the product of a creative health collaboration between the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, as well as the Childsplay AZ theater in Tempe, Arizona. This ongoing project began in the summer of 2021. It was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, and IRB approval was obtained for the project. Each participant signed informed consent documents prior to the start of the survey and the intervention. This research project aimed to explore ways in which stress can be alleviated in parents and caregivers who have medically complex children using creative play and interactive theater interventions. This study used surveys to determine how the Wonderbox activities impacted the perceived stress, well-being, overall family functioning, and quality of life of parents who have medically complex children. This study consisted of parents or caregivers of children between the ages of 6 and 17 with any type of medical complexity who spoke English. There were 31 families who participated in this study. The family APGAR (family functioning), perceived stress scale, quality of life evaluation, and the WHO-5 well-being index were measured before and following the intervention. The quality of life evaluation post-test measure was shown to be statistically significant, and the perceived stress increased but was not statistically significant. The Family APGAR had no change. In qualitative results, only five families reported their results in ClassDojo, and there was no communication between the researchers and the parents of these children. Overall, the study was successful in significantly improving quality of life and caused no harm to the participants in other areas of evaluation. Future studies should consider broadening the size of the population of the next cohort, as well as promoting better communication among these families to obtain more qualitative results.
