3D printing prosthetics for amputees is an innovative opportunity to provide a lower cost and customized alternative to current technologies. Companies, such as E-NABLE and YouBionic are developing myoelectric prosthetics, electrically powered terminal devices activated by electromyography (EMG), for transradial amputees. Prosthetics that are 3D printed are less expensive for juvenile use, more sustainable, and more accessible for those without insurance. Although they are typically not outfitted with the same complex grip patterns or durability of a traditional myoelectric prosthetic, they offer a sufficient durability (withstanding up to 150 N on average) and allow for new opportunities in prosthetic development. Devils Prosthetics, a student research and development group associated with Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS), has investigated the benefits and pitfalls of utilizing polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) for 3D printing prosthetics as well as combining a MyoWare EMG sensor with machine learning for optimal control of the prosthetic.

This creative project is composed of two parts: a food map of Black and Indigenous food systems in Arizona and a written component analyzing the initiatives. The map is composed of thirty-five initiatives focused on agriculture, food preparation, food distribution, and traditional knowledge. Each initiative on the map has a summary of their work, a quote, and a link to their website to help viewers interact with and support these initiatives. The written portion contains an overview of some historical and current barriers for Black and Indigenous food systems and a database used to systematically analyze the initiatives for trends in demographics, focuses, goals, and barriers. This creative project aimed to assess barriers and opportunities for Black and Indigenous food systems while creating an accessible resource that compiles different initiatives within these communities.

As educational tactics circulate globally, so too does the prospect of understanding sustainability amongst informed individuals and what it means for our society. Just in the past few decades, the environmental movement has changed the way in which people think about their own impact upon the planet. It is becoming a facet of common knowledge for society to realize the potential detriment of their actions, and for this, we should be grateful. However, there is much work to be done regarding all aspects of sustainability and environmental crises. This paper offers a look into the world of sustainable sunscreen usage, something that is not often thought about as an aspect of sustainable consideration. The task of this research opportunity was to examine a sample of survey respondents and connect their responses from 15 questions to different hypotheses. Alongside the discussion of sunscreen filters damaging sensitive ocean ecosystems, this research also looks into the overall importance of sunscreen for one’s health and the ways in which it can be used safely. My hope is that readers will realize the value of using sunscreen on a daily basis and become better informed of sustainability challenges and healthcare disparities.

Arizona is number one in the nation for the most food waste sent to landfills according to a study by LawnStarter® (Ardoin, 2021). This unsustainable practice of food disposal has the potential to be mitigated with the use of black soldier flies (BSF) (Stratiomyidae: Hermetia illucens) as currently explored by

Arizona is number one in the nation for the most food waste sent to landfills according to a study by LawnStarter® (Ardoin, 2021). This unsustainable practice of food disposal has the potential to be mitigated with the use of black soldier flies (BSF) (Stratiomyidae: Hermetia illucens) as currently explored by Arizona Worm Farm (AWF). BSF larvae consume the food waste allowing a more sustainable method of disposal. In addition, these larvae can be a food source for livestock. In order to improve AWF’s current program, analysis of the facility, climate, food sources, organization, and pest identification was conducted. A series of tests were designed to determine the effectiveness of, and to make improvements to, existing feeding protocols and food sources. These included nutritional analysis of the larvae, feed conversion tests, and pH analysis and moisture content examination of the standard diet of spent brewer’s grain. Environmental parameters were improved through a new organizational system, a new light source for mating, new methods for controlling humidity, and sealed enclosures for pest prevention to increase efficiency and productivity of the program. The previous open water source for adults resulted in higher mortality rates than a new system which allows for the adults to receive moisture on a cloth and reduces the risk of drowning. This study led to the development of a comprehensive protocol that will improve and grow AWF’s program by reducing mortality of adults from pests, open water, and dry conditions. Other BSF programs will be able to use this for guidance in order to raise BSF on a large scale, as a food source and for waste reduction in their own communities.

This paper outlines the issue of end-of-life management in small scale solar systems deployed generally in Sub-Saharan Africa, known as PAYGos (Pay-as-you-go). Research and interviews were conducted in order to determine the current state of the industry and plans in terms of waste management. Considering the current capabilities and technology of PV recycling, the future of the industry was analyzed. It is important to provide the highest quality of service to the customer and minimize issues with environmental hazards. Therefore, it is recommended here that PAYGo companies create contracts with recycling companies before the issue of solar waste increases drastically.

Social media has shifted the fashion industry to a new norm of fast fashion. This study examines the impact of social media marketing tactics utilized by the fashion industry, to determine the long-lasting effects on the environment. Primarily, research was conducted through a literature review to analyze the history of the fashion industry, as well as the shift to fast fashion, which encompasses microtrends, overproduction, overconsumption, and product utilization. Later, the literature review analyzes the environmental impact pertaining to each part of the product life cycle. Finally, two surveys were created and distributed to Arizona State University students in the W.P. Carey School of Business to further understand consumer behavior, opinions, and prominent purchase factors present in their decisions. The data interpretation from both surveys correlates to the research findings in the literature review, connecting the idea of low consumer value for ethical sustainability in purchasing habits, in addition to the level that student purchase habits are influenced by social media in respondents aged 18-24. This research provides the basis for needed legislation and corporate initiative, to alleviate the environment from the hazardous consequences of the fast fashion market.

Dr. Ivan Ermanoski has been working towards creating a thermochemical reactor for the purposes of hydrogen production for several years. After testing the initial design, there were found to be several areas in which possible improvements could be made. It is the purpose of this thesis project to look over the shortcomings of the previous reactor design and make improvements. The primary focus of these improvements centers around increasing the heat retention of the reactor, with a secondary focus on improving the workability and ease of construction for the reactor.
