The purpose of this thesis is to gain insight into the work of Arizona State University Supply Chain professors, as well as Supply Chain faculty from around the world. In order to gain a more thorough understanding of the research, a summary and reflection will be provided for each of the seminars attended. Summaries will include a brief background of the presenters, a summary of their research, and my personal takeaways. The seminars include research from Dr. Srimathy Mohan and Dr. Adegoke Oke from Arizona State University. Each of these professors will cover the topic of their past and/or current research in addition to their findings and key conclusions. Additionally, research from Dr. Barb Flynn of Indiana University and Dr. Seyed Emadi of University of North Carolina will be included. Research from Dr. Flynn is on the subject of understanding adaption to sustainable technologies, specifically within a manufacturing context. Research from Dr. Emadi is on the topic of determining the most effective policies to reduce attrition, specifically in call center businesses.
This thesis also includes a literature review on the subject of consumer responses to service failure. Specifically, it covers 10 articles related to the overarching subject of consumer responses to service failures in a variety of scenarios and industries. Additionally, it includes a section of potential areas for future research, with an emphasis on the growing online cloud services industry. There is room for additional research to be completed in terms of determining where consumers will place their blame for service failures that occur on cloud service platforms such as online gaming.

Former two-time Costa Rican president Dr. Oscar Arias advocates for arms control between nations and, in some cases, complete disarmament as the first step in solving grave issues of international sustainability. The three spheres of sustainability—society, economy, and environment—are explained and the ultimate goal of the compromise between all three aspects is defined as the means to achieving sustainability. A brief history of the politics and culture of Costa Rica provides a glimpse into the values and society of this Central American country, including a consistent commitment to the appreciation and protection of its natural environment. Dr. Arias is credited as one of the founding fathers of the sustainable development movement, as evidenced by his political career and policies both with Costa Rica and with other international communities. A selection of Dr. Arias’ speeches and conversations of the past four decades illuminates the need for disarmament and peaceful political interactions as the catalyst for human progress and sustainable development.

Goal of paper: To discuss the benefits and detractors of asteroid mining, and whether this is a task that should be undertaken now, or if something needs to change before real strides can be made in the field. Findings: After research and looking at what companies are currently doing, I have found several different benefits and detractors of asteroid mining. The main benefit of asteroid mining is acquiring the resources at the end of the project, whether those resources are raw metals being brought back to Earth or water that will be used as fuel for deep space travel. Those resources are extremely valuable and can create a huge profit for the company that acquires them. However, these resources can take an extremely long time to acquire, at least 20 years. So, while this industry can be extremely lucrative, it may take quite a long time and will need plenty of funding and side ventures to stay afloat long enough to reach that goal. Overall, if financed properly asteroid mining can be extremely profitable.

There is also an expanded examination of the research area from the fourth seminar, process compliance. Multiple literature sources were used to construct a perspective on process development, process standardization, and process compliance origins and current state.

Digital identification technology is the unsung hero of the LEAN manufacturing, Six sigma quality, and supply chain management movements. By tethering the physical to the digital world digital identification has helped usher industry into the information age. Today this technology continues to become more pervasive and advanced, in the future it is likely that it will have an even larger role to play. In this paper ten sources of current (last 12 months) academic literature will be reviewed in conjunction with two GE cases taken from personal experience in order to better understand the current applications and future trajectory of digital identification. The basis of this paper will be derived from understanding how the most prevalent form of digital identification, barcode is used to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of internal and external business operations. This "current state" knowledge will act as a benchmark to understand the potential diffusion and impact of future digital tracking technologies. The exploration of "up and coming" technologies will lead into a RFID technology deep dive encompassing its current applications and the frictions preventing widespread (barcode scale) implementation. In conclusion the "future state" of how RFID and more complex embedded communication devices will expand the scope of benefits granted by digital identification through a phenomenon known as the internet of things, along with the factors effecting its adoption will be discussed.

The Supply Chain Management department's alternative thesis allows students to explore multiple areas of the supply chain field through sponsored seminars. The goal is to expose the student to research in various aspects of supply chain that they may not study during their curriculum. The author of this thesis summarizes the seminars that they attended, delving into the following topics: how social networks affect service providers, presented by Gad Allon of The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania; unauthorized subcontracting, presented by Felipe Caro of the UCLA Anderson School of Management; contract negotiation, presented by Elena Katok of the University of Texas at Dallas; and electronic compliance monitoring, presented by Bradley Staats of the University of North Carolina. The summaries include an explanation of the topic presented by the researcher, the process by which the study was conducted, an analysis of the data and results, and an in-depth look at how the research relates to the supply chain field. Additionally, in accordance with the requirements of the alternative thesis, the author also collects a research anthology of fifteen scholarly articles related to one of the seminar topics. The author chose to focus on the seminar presented by Bradley Staats and how electronic monitoring can affect hand hygiene compliance through the use of RFID in a hospital setting. The author focused their research on the three sub-topics of this seminar: business process monitoring, RFID technology, and compliance. In addition to the summaries of the seminars attended and the annotated research anthology, the author includes a note to provide insight as to why they were interested electronic process compliance monitoring for the purpose of their thesis.

Replacing 214 print devices at 24 different sites across North America seemed
like an impossible project for me to manage just one year ago. Having just learned
about procurement a semester ago, and having little experience in the corporate world, I
set out as an intern at a company I will refer to as Company A, to undertake this project
with much to learn. I soon learned that replacing printers was not so simple, having to
first complete a contract that been worked on for almost two years. Following that, I had
to build relationships both internally and externally, establishing myself as the project
manager with both the vendor and Company A’s internal team. I sought to achieve
accuracy and efficiency, frequently communicating and verifying inventory before finally
beginning to replace printers across North America. After 7 months of hard-work,
collaboration, and communication, Company A was able to successfully receive all their
new print devices.
Along the way, I learned several lessons regarding goal setting, bottlenecks, and
communication. As the project kept receiving continual delays, I realized the
nonobtainable timeline and goals that were established. I also soon found bottlenecks
were constantly being avoided and pushed into the background, before growing into
large issues as the project progressed. One of the largest bottlenecks being an internal
disagreement on the secure print feature of the print devices. Finally, I found
communication between internal teams was not enough in reducing conflict and
increasing efficiency. From my experience with this project and as an intern, I have
learned many lessons that I will utilize in my professional career in the supply chain
field.

My journey through Arizona State University did not start with Supply Chain Management. I began as a Finance Major, but something did not resonate with me. I eventually switched my major to Supply Chain Management in my Junior year, after taking Professor Eddie Davila’s SCM 300 course. The hands-on nature of supply chain management, as well as the broad range of industries it covered, got me hooked. For my alternative thesis, I had to attend four seminars for WPC supply faculty, then write summaries on them. I would then choose one of the four to further extrapolate on and do independent research. However, after attending only two, the COVID-19 outbreak occurred, leading to the cancellation of the remaining seminars. As a result, I was faced with two choices; abandon the thesis project entirely, or work with what I had. With the approval of my director, I decided on the following outline. The first part of this paper will summarize and reflect on the two faculty lectures I was able to attend. The second part of the paper will look at the way COVID-19 has impacted the supply chain of a local business, SilverTree Dentistry. I will use information gathered from the dental office, supplier sites, and online sources as well as from the two faculty lectures to develop a cohesive plan of potential action for SilverTree to better equip themselves and their supply chain to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how to respond as a small business in future times of crisis. This paper’s focus is on how small business supply chains are disrupted in their areas of supplier selection and supplier power, specifically how those areas affect the business’s spend.

These summaries and lectures allowed me to learn about current supply chain research and provide a focus for the rest of my thesis. The seminars include research being done by: Mark Ferguson, Edward Anderson and Rachna Shah. The preceding professors will discuss previous or current research. The second portion of this thesis will include a literature review of papers on the topic of corporate social responsibility and unintended consequences.

Increasing prices of pharmaceutical grade prescription drugs have caused hospitals, insurance companies, and patients to search for alternative methods of treating illness. The pharmaceutical industry must find ways of lowering the costs associated with prescription drugs to avoid further scrutiny, increased regulation, and staggering profits. The use of RFID technology will increase transparency of information flow within the supply chain and reduce costs associated with recalls, counterfeits, and expired products. The failure to reduce costs in pharmaceuticals and decreased profits have introduced natural supplements into the market. Without the need for FDA regulation and clinical trials, the pharmaceutical industry has developed supplements with the potential benefits of increasing lifespan. The organic molecule, resveratrol, and its ability to mimic the effects of caloric restriction increasing lifespan in smaller organisms has translated to its use in humans. With the future of increased lifespan and youthful aging, the study of sirtuin activating compounds (STACS) and telomere lengthening will become the future of anti-aging cosmetics.
