Research on leaders indicates that strong leadership depends on certain behavioral factors as well as an established sense of trust and cooperation between leaders and the individuals they lead. In order to understand what has the greatest influence on an individual’s leadership abilities, this study was conducted to uncover what factors play the largest role in how an individual leads others and how they view others as leaders; the factors examined were extraversion, gender, honors college, class standing, and GPA. Along with this, the study was designed to determine the impact of ambiversion on leadership as well as the aforementioned factors. According to research, ambiverts are more dynamic and their behavior depends upon the situation at hand. In this study, a survey was conducted to gather information on students, assess their level of extraversion, and obtain their experiences both as leaders and when other individuals were leading them. Based on personality, extraverts felt more confident and effective in their leadership abilities, introverts were more authoritative in their approach to leadership and took charge of the group, and ambiverts did not feel confident or effective as leaders. Overall, women were more confident in their leadership abilities and felt they were more effective leaders. Women also are considered more team style leaders that encourage group members to participate and view success as a group effort. Men are more authoritative in their leadership style and believe the group should follow their rules. Along with this, women rated themselves as introverts less than men. Along other dimensions, W.P. Carey students are less about the people in their leadership style than other majors, and Barrett students are more focused on the task side of leadership than non-Barrett individuals. Additionally, students in the top GPA bracket are more team style leaders while students in the highest class standing are less team style with their leadership approach.

100-Year Love Story: The National Football League and Its Fandom

The sport of football has become one of the most widely loved and watched sports in the United States. Fans of football are extremely dedicated to the sport and form very personal, emotional attachments to teams within the National Football League. Through studying these fans, three main analysis topics will be addressed in this thesis: the established fan knowledge that creates rules within the fandom on how a fan participates and the exceptions to those rules, the need that fan's who do not fit into the normative patterns of the fandom feel to explain their motivations, and the degree of fanship that can be measured through a fan's explanation for their deviant behavior. For this fandom analysis, two sets of data will be referenced throughout the discussion. The first is anecdotal data pulled from various reddit threads on the personal experiences of each fan as well as some opinion sharing about the National Football League fandom. The second set of data is primary data that I have compiled via a survey. The established fan knowledge within this fandom is two fold: First, fans choose their team for a specific reason (usually based off of the team their parent's are a fan of or the state they grew up in), which typically takes place by age twelve. Secondly, once a fan chooses a team, they should stick with that team through their entire fanship. This second piece of fan knowledge is the most important rule within the fandom. This idea of loyalty is what guides fan participation. Identifying this rule led me to my main question about this fandom \u2014 if fans are so dedicated to their chosen team, what does it mean when someone switches to a new team. I feel that this breaking of a bond that seems so personal to fans is important and should be researched. This brought me to researching these fans that have switched teams, learning why, as well as what this group of fans can say about the National Football League fandom as a whole.

Inhibition of PKR phosphorylation by Vaccinia Virus' E3 Protein

Vaccinia virus is a cytoplasmic, double-stranded DNA orthopoxvirus. Unlike mammalian cells, vaccinia virus produces double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) during its viral life cycle. The protein kinase R, PKR, is one of the principal host defense mechanisms against orthopoxvirus infection. PKR can bind double-stranded RNA and phosphorylate eukaryotic translation initiation factor, eIF2α, shutting down protein synthesis and halting the viral life cycle. To combat host defenses, vaccinia virus encodes E3, a potent inhibitor of the cellular anti-viral eIF2α kinase, PKR. The E3 protein contains a C-terminal dsRNA-binding motif that sequesters dsRNA and inhibits PKR activation. We demonstrate that E3 also interacts with PKR by co-immunoprecipitation. This interaction is independent of the presence of dsRNA and dsRNA-binding by E3, indicating that the interaction is not due to dsRNA-bridging.
PKR interaction mapped to a region within the dsRNA-binding domain of E3 and overlapped with sequences in the C-terminus of this domain that are necessary for binding to dsRNA. Point mutants of E3 were generated and screened for PKR inhibition and direct interaction. Analysis of these mutants demonstrates that dsRNA-binding but not PKR interaction plays a critical role in the broad host range of VACV. Nonetheless, full inhibition of PKR in cells in culture requires both dsRNA-binding and PKR interaction. Because E3 is highly conserved among orthopoxviruses, understanding the mechanisms that E3 uses to inhibit PKR can give insight into host range pathogenesis of dsRNA producing viruses.

This paper will begin by initially discussing the potential uses and challenges of efficient and accurate traffic forecasting. The data we used includes traffic volume from seven locations on a busy Athens street in April and May of 2000. This data was used as part of a traffic forecasting competition. Our initial observation, was that due to the volatility and oscillating nature of daily traffic volume, simple linear regression models will not perform well in predicting the time-series data. For this we present the Harmonic Time Series model. Such model (assuming all predictors are significant) will include a sinusoidal term for each time index within a period of data. Our assumption is that traffic volumes have a period of one week (which is evidenced by the graphs reproduced in our paper). This leads to a model that has 6,720 sine and cosine terms. This is clearly too many coefficients, so in an effort to avoid over-fitting and having an efficient model, we apply the sub-setting algorithm known as Adaptive Lass.

This research was aimed at identifying the problems of the kidney transplant market and then proposing business-minded solutions. The methodology that was used to compile research was an industry analysis, a business model canvas, the lean startup methodology, academic papers, popular culture references, previous and present marketing campaigns, an internship at a local hospital, and organ transplant databases. The problems I identified was that kidney transplant industry was favorable but had few competitors, a mounting demand with a lack of supply, a lack of public awareness, negative public perception, and incorrectly focused marketing campaigns. The solutions that I constructed were the endorsement of grocery retail clinics as a step to prevent a future increase in demand for kidneys, a hybridized opt-in system that would increase the supply of transplantable kidneys, a public awareness campaign that would increase the public's awareness and shift it into a positive light, and a refocused marketing campaign that centered on why people become donors. The implementation of these solutions should be solution1, then solution 3 and 4, and then after the public has enough time to ruminate, employ solution 2.

The objective of this research study is to assess the effectiveness of a poster-based messaging campaign and engineering-based activities for middle school and high school students to encourage students to explore and to pursue chemical engineering. Additionally, presentations are incorporated into both methods to provide context and improve understanding of the presented poster material or activity. Pre-assessments and post-assessments are the quantitative method of measuring effectiveness. For the poster campaign, ASU juniors and seniors participated in the poster campaign by producing socially relevant messages about their research or aspirations to address relevant chemical engineering problems. For the engineering-based activity, high school students participated in an Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering program "Young Engineers Shape the World" in which the students participated in six-hour event learning about four engineering disciplines, and the chemical engineering presentation and activity was conducted in one of the sessions. Pre-assessments were given at the beginning of the event, and the post-assessments were provided towards the end of the event. This honors thesis project will analyze the collected data.

The purpose of this research is to determine how table-top tablets in restaurants are affecting customer dining experience. The data was collected through a survey that was administered to all individuals over the age of 18 who wished to participate in the survey. The questions in the survey focused on determining how tablets affected the customer's overall dining experience with respect to several key aspects of the customer's experience at the restaurant. In addition, the questions were intended to determine differences in personality, gender, age, and customers who had/did not have children under the age of 18 and how this affected the dining experience/tablet usage. Findings from the study demonstrate that table-top tablets are not providing a more positive experience overall to customers, but customers are enjoying the ability to pay on the tablets. Additionally, personality factors such as introversion and openness to experience do affect a customer's dining experience/tablet usage because individuals who are more introverted and less open to new experiences are slightly less likely to use the tablet and/or enjoy using the tablet. The findings from the study also help to show that various demographic difference do change how a customer uses the tablet, the customer's experience with the tablet, and whether the customer chooses to use the tablet or not. Furthermore, the results indicate that restaurants might be providing worse service than they were previously due to a minor reliance on these table-top tablets and a decrease in wait staff. Implications for these findings can be looked at from two different perspectives. This research can be helpful for not only restaurants possibly considering the implementation of table-top tablets, but also consumers/customers who are dining at these restaurants. Recommendations for future research are based on the findings from the study and the responses of the individuals.

In the area of hardware, reverse engineering was traditionally focused on developing clones—duplicated components that performed the same functionality of the original component. While reverse engineering techniques have been applied to software, these techniques have instead focused on understanding high-level software designs to ease the software maintenance burden. This approach works well for traditional applications that contain source code, however, there are circumstances, particularly regarding web applications, where it would be very beneficial to clone a web application and no source code is present, e.g., for security testing of the application or for offline mock testing of a third-party web service. We call this the web application cloning problem.
This thesis presents a possible solution to the problem of web application cloning. Our approach is a novel application of inductive programming, which we call inductive reverse engineering. The goal of inductive reverse engineering is to automatically reverse engineer an abstraction of the web application’s code in a completely black-box manner. We build this approach using recent advances in inductive programming, and we solve several technical challenges to scale the inductive programming techniques to realistic-sized web applications. We target the initial version of our inductive reverse engineering tool to a subset of web applications, i.e., those that do not store state and those that do not have loops. We introduce an evaluation methodology for web application cloning techniques and evaluate our approach on several real-world web applications. The results indicate that inductive reverse engineering can effectively reverse engineer specific types of web applications. In the future, we hope to extend the power of inductive reverse engineering to web applications with state and to learn loops, while still maintaining tractability.

An analysis of these prevention methods have led to the formulation of three core components in the solution to the sexual assault epidemic on college campuses. Recommendations for ASU to combat a culture of sexual violence are provided based on this research along with rationale as to why they are the best methods to focus on.
